A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. | 1 A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our refuge through all generations. |
Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity and to eternity thou art God. | 2 Before the mountains were born, the earth and the world brought forth, from eternity to eternity you are God. |
Turn not man away to be brought low: and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men. | 3 But humans you return to dust, saying, "Return, you mortals!" |
For a thousand years in thy sight are as yesterday, which is past. And as a watch in the night, | 4 A thousand years in your eyes are merely a yesterday, |
things that are counted nothing, shall their years be. | 5 you have brought them to their end; They disappear like sleep at dawn; they are like grass that dies. |
In the morning man shall grow up like grass; in the morning he shall flourish and pass away: in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither. | 6 It sprouts green in the morning; by evening it is dry and withered. |
For in thy wrath we have fainted away: and are troubled in thy indignation. | 7 Truly we are consumed by your anger, filled with terror by your wrath. |
Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: our life in the light of thy countenance. | 8 You have kept our faults before you, our hidden sins exposed to your sight. |
For all our days are spent; and in thy wrath we have fainted away. Our years shall be considered spider: | 9 Our life ebbs away under your wrath; our years end like a sigh. |
the days of our years in them are threescore and ten years. But if in the strong they be fourscore years: and what is more of them is labour and sorrow. For mildness is come upon us: and we shall be corrected. | 10 Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty, if we are strong; Most of them are sorrow and toil; they pass quickly, we are all but gone. |
Who knoweth the power of thy anger, and for thy fear | 11 Who comprehends your terrible anger? Your wrath matches the fear it inspires. |
can number thy wrath? So make thy right hand known: and men learned in heart, in wisdom. | 12 Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. |
Return, O Lord, how long? and be entreated in favour of thy servants. | 13 Relent, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! |
We are filled in the morning with thy mercy: and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days. | 14 Fill us at daybreak with your love, that all our days we may sing for joy. |
We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us: for the years in which we have seen evils. | 15 Make us glad as many days as you humbled us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. |
Look upon thy servants and upon their works: and direct their children. | 16 Show your deeds to your servants, your glory to their children. |
And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; yea, the work of our hands do thou direct. | 17 May the favor of the Lord our God be ours. Prosper the work of our hands! Prosper the work of our hands! |
