| 1 Josué reunió todas las tribus de Israel en Siquén y llamó a los ancianos de Israel, a los jefes, a los jueces y a los magistrados. Y se presentaron ante Dios. | 1 Joshua gathered al the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; he then summoned al the elders ofIsrael, its leaders, judges and officials, and they presented themselves in God's presence. |
| 2 Josué dijo a todo el pueblo: «Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Al otro lado del río Éufrates vivieron antaño vuestros padres: Téraj, padre de Abrahán y de Najor, y servían a otros dioses. | 2 Joshua then said to al the people: 'Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, "From time immemorial, yourancestors, Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River, and served other gods. |
| 3 Yo tomé a Abrahán vuestro padre del otro lado del Río, lo conduje por toda la tierra de Canaán y multipliqué su descendencia, dándole un hijo, Isaac. | 3 I then brought your ancestor Abraham from beyond the River and led him through the length andbreadth of Canaan. I increased his descendants and I gave him Isaac. |
| 4 A Isaac le di dos hijos: Jacob y Esaú. A Esaú le di en propiedad la montaña de Seír, mientras que Jacob y sus hijos bajaron a Egipto. | 4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave possession of the mountainous country of Seir.Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt. |
| 5 Envié después a Moisés y Aarón y castigué a Egipto con los portentos que hice en su tierra. Luego os saqué de allí. | 5 I then sent Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there; final y I broughtyou out. |
| 6 Saqué de Egipto a vuestros padres y llegasteis al mar. Los egipcios persiguieron a vuestros padres con sus carros y caballos hasta el mar Rojo; | 6 I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestorswith chariots and horsemen, to the Sea of Reeds. |
| 7 pero ellos gritaron al Señor y él tendió una nube oscura entre vosotros y los egipcios; después hizo que se desplomara sobre ellos el mar, que los anegó. Con vuestros propios ojos visteis lo que hice con Egipto. Después vivisteis en el desierto muchos años. | 7 They then called to Yahweh, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made thesea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then, for a long while,you lived in the desert. |
| 8 Os llevé luego a la tierra de los amorreos que vivían al otro lado del Jordán: ellos os atacaron, pero yo os los di. Así tomasteis posesión de sus tierras, y yo los exterminé a vuestra llegada. | 8 I then brought you into the country of the Amorites, who used to live on the further side of the Jordan;they made war on you and I put them at your mercy; after which, you took possession of their country, since Idestroyed them before you. |
| 9 Entonces se alzó Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab, para atacar a Israel; y mandó llamar a Balaán, hijo de Beor, para que os maldijera; | 9 Next, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beorto come and curse you. |
| 10 pero yo no quise escuchar a Balaán, que no tuvo más remedio que bendeciros, y así os libré de sus manos. | 10 But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his power. |
| 11 Pasasteis después el Jordán y llegasteis a Jericó. Los jefes de Jericó (y los amorreos, perizitas, cananeos, hititas, guirgaseos, heveos y jebuseos) os atacaron, pero yo os los di; | 11 "You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, but the inhabitants of Jericho made war on you:Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I put them al at your mercy. |
| 12 mandé delante de vosotros avispas, que expulsaron, al llegar vosotros, a los dos reyes amorreos: no fue con tu espada ni con tu arco. | 12 I sent hornets ahead of you, which drove out the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the workof your sword or of your bow. |
| 13 Y os di una tierra por la que no habíais sudado, ciudades que no habíais construido y en las que ahora vivís, viñedos y olivares que no habíais plantado y de cuyos frutos ahora coméis”. | 13 And now I have given you a country for which you have not toiled, towns you have not built, althoughyou live in them, vineyards and olive groves you have not planted, although you eat their fruit." |
| 14 Pues bien: temed al Señor; servidle con toda sinceridad; quitad de en medio los dioses a los que sirvieron vuestros padres al otro lado del Río y en Egipto; y servid al Señor. | 14 'So now, fear Yahweh and serve him truly and sincerely; banish the gods whom your ancestorsserved beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh. |
| 15 Pero si os resulta duro servir al Señor, elegid hoy a quién queréis servir: si a los dioses a los que sirvieron vuestros padres al otro lado del Río, o a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuyo país habitáis; que yo y mi casa serviremos al Señor». | 15 But if serving Yahweh seems a bad thing to you, today you must make up your minds whom you domean to serve, whether the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites inwhose country you are now living. As regards my family and me, we shal serve Yahweh.' |
| 16 El pueblo respondió: «¡Lejos de nosotros abandonar al Señor para ir a servir a otros dioses! | 16 The people replied, 'Far be it from us to desert Yahweh and to serve other gods! |
| 17 Porque el Señor nuestro Dios es quien nos sacó, a nosotros y a nuestros padres, de Egipto, de la casa de la esclavitud; y quien hizo ante nuestros ojos aquellos grandes prodigios y nos guardó en todo nuestro peregrinar y entre todos los pueblos por los que atravesamos. | 17 Yahweh our God was the one who brought us and our ancestors here from Egypt, from the place ofslave-labour, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and who kept us safe all along the way wetravel ed and among all the peoples through whom we passed. |
| 18 Además, el Señor expulsó ante nosotros a los pueblos amorreos que habitaban el país. También nosotros serviremos al Señor, ¡porque él es nuestro Dios!». | 18 And Yahweh has driven all the nations out for us, including the Amorites who used to live in thecountry. We too shal serve Yahweh, for he is our God.' |
| 19 Y Josué dijo al pueblo: «No lograréis servir al Señor, porque es un Dios santo, un Dios celoso. No perdonará vuestros delitos ni vuestros pecados. | 19 Joshua then said to the people, 'You will not be able to serve Yahweh, since he is a holy God, he is ajealous God who wil not tolerate either your misdeeds or your sins. |
| 20 Si abandonáis al Señor y servís a dioses extranjeros, él también se volverá contra vosotros y, después de haberos hecho tanto bien, os maltratará y os aniquilará». | 20 If you desert Yahweh and serve the foreigners' gods, he will turn and maltreat you anew and, in spiteof having been good to you in the past, wil destroy you.' |
| 21 El pueblo le respondió: «¡No! Nosotros serviremos al Señor». | 21 The people replied to Joshua, 'No! Yahweh is the one we mean to serve.' |
| 22 Josué insistió: «Vosotros sois testigos contra vosotros mismos de que habéis elegido al Señor para servirle». Respondieron: «¡Testigos somos!». | 22 Joshua then said to the people, 'You are witnesses to yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh, toserve him.' They replied, 'Witnesses we are!' |
| 23 «Entonces, quitad de en medio los dioses extranjeros que conserváis, e inclinad vuestro corazón hacia el Señor, Dios de Israel». | 23 'Then banish the foreign gods which you have with you and give your al egiance to Yahweh, God ofIsrael!' |
| 24 El pueblo respondió: «¡Al Señor nuestro Dios serviremos y obedeceremos su voz!». | 24 The people replied to Joshua, 'Yahweh our God is the one whom we shall serve; his voice we shalobey!' |
| 25 Aquel día Josué selló una alianza con el pueblo y les dio leyes y mandatos en Siquén. | 25 That day Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them atShechem. |
| 26 Josué escribió estas palabras en el libro de la ley de Dios. Cogió una gran piedra y la erigió allí, bajo la encina que hay en el santuario del Señor. | 26 Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. He then took a large stone and set it upthere, under the oak tree in Yahweh's sanctuary. |
| 27 Y dijo Josué a todo el pueblo: «Mirad, esta piedra será testigo contra nosotros, porque ha oído todas las palabras que el Señor nos ha dicho. Ella será testigo contra vosotros, para que no podáis renegar de vuestro Dios». | 27 Joshua then said to all the people, 'Look, this stone will be a witness to us, since it has heard al thewords that Yahweh has spoken to us: it wil be a witness against you, in case you should deny your God.' |
| 28 Luego Josué despidió al pueblo, cada cual a su heredad. | 28 Joshua then dismissed the people, every one to his own heritage. |
| 29 Y después de todo esto, murió Josué, hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, a la edad de ciento diez años. | 29 After this, Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died; he was a hundred and ten years old. |
| 30 Fue enterrado en el término de su heredad, en Timná Séraj, que está en la montaña de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaás. | 30 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage, at Timnath-Serah which lies inthe highlands of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. |
| 31 Israel sirvió al Señor durante toda la vida de Josué y durante toda la vida de los ancianos que le sobrevivieron y que conocían todas las hazañas del Señor en favor de Israel. | 31 Israel served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel. |
| 32 Los huesos de José, que los hijos de Israel habían traído de Egipto, los enterraron en Siquén, en el campo que había comprado Jacob a los hijos de Jamor, padre de Siquén, por cien monedas, y que pasó a ser heredad de los hijos de José. | 32 As regards the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought from Egypt, these were buried atShechem in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamorfather of Shechem, and which had become the heritage of the sons of Joseph. |
| 33 También murió Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, y lo enterraron en Guibeá, ciudad que le había sido adjudicada a su hijo Pinjás, en la montaña de Efraín. | 33 Eleazar son of Aaron then died and was buried at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which hadbeen given to him in the highlands of Ephraim. |
