| 1 Vosotros, hermanos, sabéis muy bien que nuestra visita no fue inútil; | 1 You know yourselves, my brothers, that our visit to you has not been pointless. |
| 2 a pesar de los sufrimientos e injurias padecidos en Filipos, que ya conocéis, apoyados en nuestro Dios, tuvimos valor para predicaros el Evangelio de Dios en medio de fuerte oposición. | 2 Although, as you know, we had received rough treatment and insults at Philippi, God gave us thecourage to speak his gospel to you fearlessly, in spite of great opposition. |
| 3 Nuestra exhortación no procedía de error o de motivos turbios, ni usaba engaños, | 3 Our encouragement to you does not come from any delusion or impure motives or trickery. |
| 4 sino que, en la medida en que Dios nos juzgó aptos para confiarnos el Evangelio, así lo predicamos: no para contentar a los hombres, sino a Dios, que juzga nuestras intenciones. | 4 No, God has approved us to be entrusted with the gospel, and this is how we preach, seeking to pleasenot human beings but God who tests our hearts. |
| 5 Bien sabéis vosotros que nunca hemos actuado ni con palabras de adulación ni por codicia disimulada, Dios es testigo, | 5 Indeed, we have never acted with the thought of flattering anyone, as you know, nor as an excuse forgreed, God is our witness; |
| 6 ni pretendiendo honor de los hombres, ni de vosotros, ni de los demás, | 6 nor have we ever looked for honour from human beings, either from you or anybody else, |
| 7 aunque, como apóstoles de Cristo, podíamos haberos hablado con autoridad; por el contrario, nos portamos con delicadeza entre vosotros, como una madre que cuida con cariño de sus hijos. | 7 when we could have imposed ourselves on you with full weight, as apostles of Christ. Instead, we livedunassumingly among you. Like a mother feeding and looking after her children, |
| 8 Os queríamos tanto que deseábamos entregaros no solo el Evangelio de Dios, sino hasta nuestras propias personas, porque os habíais ganado nuestro amor. | 8 we felt so devoted to you, that we would have been happy to share with you not only the gospel of God,but also our own lives, so dear had you become. |
| 9 Recordad, hermanos, nuestros esfuerzos y fatigas; trabajando día y noche para no ser gravosos a nadie, proclamamos entre vosotros el Evangelio de Dios. | 9 You remember, brothers, with what unsparing energy we used to work, slaving night and day so as notto be a burden on any one of you while we were proclaiming the gospel of God to you. |
| 10 Vosotros sois testigos, y Dios también, de que nuestro proceder con vosotros, los creyentes, fue leal, recto e irreprochable; | 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, that our treatment of you, since you believed, has been impeccablyfair and upright. |
| 11 sabéis perfectamente que, lo mismo que un padre con sus hijos, | 11 As you know, we treated every one of you as a father treats his children, |
| 12 nosotros os exhortábamos a cada uno de vosotros, os animábamos y os urgíamos a llevar una vida digna de Dios, que os ha llamado a su reino y a su gloria. | 12 urging you, encouraging you and appealing to you to live a life worthy of God, who cal s you into hiskingdom and his glory. |
| 13 Por tanto, también nosotros damos gracias a Dios sin cesar, porque, al recibir la palabra de Dios, que os predicamos, la acogisteis no como palabra humana, sino, cual es en verdad, como palabra de Dios que permanece operante en vosotros los creyentes. | 13 Another reason why we continual y thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the word that webrought you as God's message, you welcomed it for what it really is, not the word of any human being, but God'sword, a power that is working among you believers. |
| 14 Efectivamente, vosotros, hermanos, seguisteis el ejemplo de las iglesias de Dios que están en Judea, en Cristo Jesús, pues también vosotros habéis sufrido de vuestros propios compatriotas exactamente lo mismo que ellos de los judíos, | 14 For you, my brothers, have model ed yourselves on the churches of God in Christ Jesus which are inJudaea, in that you have suffered the same treatment from your own countrymen as they have had from theJews, |
| 15 que mataron al Señor Jesús y a los profetas, y nos persiguieron a nosotros; estos no agradan a Dios y son enemigos de todo el mundo; | 15 who put the Lord Jesus to death, and the prophets too, and persecuted us also. Their conduct doesnot please God, and makes them the enemies of the whole human race, |
| 16 impiden que hablemos a los gentiles para que se salven, colmando en todo tiempo la medida de sus pecados; pero la ira descargó sobre ellos hasta el extremo. | 16 because they are hindering us from preaching to gentiles to save them. Thus al the time they arereaching the ful extent of their iniquity, but retribution has final y overtaken them. |
| 17 Por nuestra parte, hermanos, al vernos separados de vosotros por breve tiempo, físicamente, no con el corazón, redoblamos los esfuerzos para ir a veros personalmente, tan ardiente era nuestro deseo; | 17 Although we had been deprived of you for only a short time in body but never in affection, brothers, wehad an especially strong desire and longing to see you face to face again, |
| 18 porque nos propusimos haceros una visita, y, en particular, yo, Pablo, una y otra vez, pero Satanás nos lo impidió. | 18 and we tried hard to come and visit you; I, Paul, tried more than once, but Satan prevented us. |
| 19 Al fin y al cabo, ¿quién, sino vosotros, puede ser nuestra esperanza, nuestra alegría y nuestra honrosa corona ante nuestro Señor cuando venga? | 19 What do you think is our hope and our joy, and what our crown of honour in the presence of our LordJesus when he comes? |
