| 1 El Señor dirigió la palabra por segunda vez a Jonás. Le dijo así: | 1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time. |
| 2 —Ponte en marcha y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive; allí les anunciarás el mensaje que yo te comunicaré. | 2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.' |
| 3 Jonás se puso en marcha hacia Nínive, siguiendo la orden del Señor. Nínive era una ciudad inmensa; hacían falta tres días para recorrerla. | 3 Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days. |
| 4 Jonás empezó a recorrer la ciudad el primer día, proclamando: «Dentro de cuarenta días, Nínive será arrasada». | 4 Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.' |
| 5 Los ninivitas creyeron en Dios, proclamaron un ayuno y se vistieron con rudo sayal, desde el más importante al menor. | 5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least. |
| 6 La noticia llegó a oídos del rey de Nínive, que se levantó de su trono, se despojó del manto real, se cubrió con rudo sayal y se sentó sobre el polvo. | 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes. |
| 7 Después ordenó proclamar en Nínive este anuncio de parte del rey y de sus ministros: «Que hombres y animales, ganado mayor y menor no coman nada; que no pasten ni beban agua. | 7 He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water. |
| 8 Que hombres y animales se cubran con rudo sayal e invoquen a Dios con ardor. Que cada cual se convierta de su mal camino y abandone la violencia. | 8 All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour. |
| 9 ¡Quién sabe si Dios cambiará y se compadecerá, se arrepentirá de su violenta ira y no nos destruirá!». | 9 Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.' |
| 10 Vio Dios su comportamiento, cómo habían abandonado el mal camino, y se arrepintió de la desgracia que había determinado enviarles. Así que no la ejecutó. | 10 God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it. |
