| 1 El Señor dijo a Josué: | 1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, |
| 2 «Habla en estos términos a los israelitas: Determinen cuáles serán las ciudades de refugio –esas de las que yo les hablé por medio de Moisés– | 2 "Say to the people of Israel, 'Appoint the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, |
| 3 para que allí puedan encontrar asilo los homicidas que hayan matado a una persona sin premeditación e inadvertidamente. Así ustedes tendrán un refugio contra el vengador del homicidio. | 3 that the manslayer who kills any person without intent or unwittingly may flee there; they shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. |
| 4 El homicida huirá a una de estas ciudades, se detendrá a la entrada de la puerta, y expondrá su caso a los ancianos de la ciudad. Estos lo admitirán, y le asignarán un lugar para que habite con ellos. | 4 He shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and explain his case to the elders of that city; then they shall take him into the city, and give him a place, and he shall remain with them. |
| 5 Y si el vengador del homicidio lo persigue, no lo pondrán en sus manos, porque mató a su prójimo inadvertidamente, sin haberlo odiado antes. | 5 And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the slayer into his hand; because he killed his neighbor unwittingly, having had no enmity against him in times past. |
| 6 Después de comparecer delante de la comunidad para ser juzgado, el homicida permanecerá en aquella ciudad hasta la muerte del Sumo Sacerdote que esté en funciones en aquellos días. Entonces podrá entrar de nuevo en la ciudad y en su casa, en la ciudad de donde había huido». | 6 And he shall remain in that city until he has stood before the congregation for judgment, until the death of him who is high priest at the time: then the slayer may go again to his own town and his own home, to the town from which he fled.'" |
| 7 Con este fin, los israelitas consagraron las siguientes ciudades: Quedes, en Galilea, en la montaña de Neftalí; Siquem, en la montaña de Efraím; Quiriat Arba –o sea Hebrón– en la montaña de Judá. | 7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. |
| 8 Y al otro lado del Jordán, al este de Jericó, se designó a Béser –de la tribu de Rubén, que estaba situada en el desierto, sobre el altiplano– a Ramot de Galaad, de la tribu de Gad, y a Golán, situada en Basán y perteneciente a la tribu de Manasés. | 8 And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland, from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh. |
| 9 Estas fueron las ciudades asignadas a todos los israelitas y a los extranjeros que residían en medio de ellos, para que todo el que matara sin premeditación a una persona pudiera refugiarse en ellas, y así no muriera en manos del vengador del homicidio, antes de comparecer delante de la comunidad. | 9 These were the cities designated for all the people of Israel, and for the stranger sojourning among them, that any one who killed a person without intent could flee there, so that he might not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, till he stood before the congregation. |
