1 ¡Muerte, qué amargo es tu recuerdo para el que vive tranquilo en medio de sus bienes, para el hombre despreocupado, a quien todo le va bien y aún tiene vigor para disfrutar de la vida!	1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.
2 ¡Muerte, tu sentencia es bienvenida para el hombre necesitado y sin fuerzas, gastado por los años y lleno de ansiedades, que se rebela y ha agotado su paciencia!	2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.
3 No temas a tu sentencia de muerte, recuerda a los que te precedieron y te seguirán.	3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.
4 Esta es la sentencia del Señor para todo ser viviente: ¿por qué oponerse a la voluntad del Altísimo? Aunque vivas diez, cien o mil años, en el Abismo no te echarán en cara lo que hayas vivido.	4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.
5 Los hijos de los pecadores son gente abominable que frecuentan las casas de los impíos.	5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.
6 La herencia de los hijos de los pecadores va a la ruina, con su descendencia se perpetúa su infamia.	6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.
7 Un padre impío se atrae los reproches de sus hijos, porque es a él a quien deben su infamia.	7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.
8 ¡Ay de ustedes, hombres impíos, que han abandonado la Ley del Dios Altísimo!	8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.
9 Si ustedes nacen, nacen para la maldición, y si mueren, les tocará en suerte la maldición.	9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.
10 Todo lo que sale de la tierra, vuelve a la tierra: así pasan los impíos, de la maldición a la ruina.	10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.
11 Los hombres se lamentan porque perece su cuerpo. y en cuanto a los pecadores, hasta su mal nombre se borrará..	11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.
12 Cuida tu buen nombre, porque eso te quedará mucho más que mil tesoros de oro.	12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;
13 Una vida feliz tiene sus días contados, pero el buen nombre permanece para siempre.	13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.
14 Hijos míos, observen en paz mi enseñanza. Sabiduría escondida y tesoro invisible: ¿de qué sirven una cosa y la otra?	14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:
15 Es preferible el hombre que disimula su necedad al que oculta su sabiduría.	15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;
16 Por lo tanto, sientan vergüenza de lo que les voy a indicar, porque no está bien avergonzarse por cualquier cosa ni toda vergüenza merece ser igualmente aprobada.	16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;
17 Tengan vergüenza de la fornicación ante su padre y su madre, y de la mentira, ante un jefe y un poderoso;	17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.
18 del delito ante un juez y un magistrado, y de la iniquidad ante la asamblea del pueblo;	18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;
19 de la injusticia ante un compañero y un amigo, y del robo ante su vecindario;	19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,
20 de violar un juramento y un pacto, y de apoyar los codos en la mesa;	20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;
21 de dar o recibir con desdén, y de no devolver el saludo;	21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;
22 de mirar a una prostituta, y de dar vuelta la cara a un pariente;	22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;
23 de quitar a otro su parte o el regalo que recibió, y de mirar a una mujer casada;	23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--
24 de tener intimidades con tu sirvienta, ¡no te acerques a su lecho!	24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
25 de decir palabras hirientes a tus amigos ¡lo que les des no se lo eches en cara!
26 de repetir lo que has oído y de revelar los secretos.
27 Entonces sentirás una auténtica vergüenza, y serás bien visto por todos los hombres.
