| 1 Or avvenne che mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraversate le provincie superiori, giunse ad Efeso e vi trovò alcuni discepoli, | 1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. |
| 2 e disse loro: Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito Santo dopo che avete creduto? Ma quelli risposero: Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito dire che ci sia lo Spirito Santo. | 2 And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." |
| 3 Ed egli a loro: Con qual battesimo adunque siete stati battezzati? E quelli dissero: Col battesimo di Giovanni. | 3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." |
| 4 E allora Paolo: Giovanni battezzò il popolo col battesimo di penitenza, dicendo che credessero in quello che doveva venire dopo di lui, cioè Gesù. | 4 And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." |
| 5 Udite tali cose, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù. | 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. |
| 6 E, avendo Paolo imposto loro le mani, sopra di essi venne lo Spirito Santo, e parlavano le lingue, e profetavano. | 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. |
| 7 Questi eran circa dodici uomini fra tutti, | 7 There were about twelve of them in all. |
| 8 ed entrato nella sinagoga, parlava liberamente, disputando per tre mesi e rendendo ragione delle cose del regno di Dio. | 8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God; |
| 9 Ma siccome alcuni s'intestavano, non credevano e diffamavano la via del Signore dinanzi al popolo, ritirandosi da loro segregò i discepoli, e disputava ogni giorno nella scuola di un certo Tiranno. | 9 but when some were stubborn and disbelieved, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them, taking the disciples with him, and argued daily in the hall of Tyrannus. |
| 10 E ciò per due anni, in modo che tutti quelli che abitavano l'Asia, e Giudei e Gentili, udirono la parola del Signore. | 10 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. |
| 11 E Dio faceva prodigi non ordinari per mano di Paolo: | 11 And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, |
| 12 tanto che si portavano ai malati i fazzoletti ed i grembiuli che erano stati sul corpo di lui, e da essi partivano le malattie ed uscivano gli spiriti maligni. | 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. |
| 13 Tentarono allora alcuni esorcisti Giudei, e girovaghi, di invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra coloro, che avevano degli spiriti cattivi, dicendo: Vi scongiuro pel nome di quel Gesù predicato da Paolo. | 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." |
| 14 Quelli che facevan questo eran sette figli di Sceva, giudeo principe dei sacerdoti. | 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. |
| 15 Ma lo spirito maligno, rispondendo, disse loro: Conosco Gesù e so chi è Paolo; ma voi chi siete? | 15 But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" |
| 16 E l'uomo in cui era lo spirito maligno, saltato loro addosso e sopraffattine due, li malmenò talmente che fuggirono da quella casa ignudi e feriti. | 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, mastered all of them, and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. |
| 17 E la cosa fu risaputa da tutti i Giudei e i Gentili d'Efeso, e tutti furono presi da timore, ed il nome del Signore Gesù era glorificato. | 17 And this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. |
| 18 E molti di quelli che avevan creduto venivano a confessare e manifestare le opere loro. | 18 Many also of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. |
| 19 E parecchi di quelli che erano andati dietro ad arti vane portarono i loro libri e li bruciarono in presenza di tutti, e calcolatone il prezzo si trovò che ascendeva a cinquantamila pezzi d'argento. | 19 And a number of those who practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. |
| 20 Così, cresceva potentemente e s'invigoriva la parola di Dio. | 20 So the word of the Lord grew and prevailed mightily. |
| 21 Terminate queste cose, Paolo si prefisse nello spirito di andare attraverso la Macedonia e l'Acaia a Gerusalemme, dicendo: Dopo che sarò stato là bisogna che io vada anche a Roma. | 21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome." |
| 22 E, mandati nella Macedonia due di quelli che l'assistevano, Timoteo ed Erasto, egli rimase per un po' di tempo nell'Asia. | 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. |
| 23 Allora, nacque non piccolo tumulto a causa della via del Signore. | 23 About that time there arose no little stir concerning the Way. |
| 24 Perchè un certo orefice, di nome Demetrio, che faceva in argento dei tempietti di Diana, e procacciava non poco guadagno agli artigiani, | 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. |
| 25 convocati questi e quanti lavoravano in simili cose, disse: Amici, sapete bene che la nostra ricchezza dipende tutta da questa industria; | 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, "Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. |
| 26 or vedete e sentite che non solo in Efeso, ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, questo Paolo ha pervertito gran folla, affermando che quelli che si fan colle mani non sono dèi. | 26 And you see and hear that not only at Ephesus but almost throughout all Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable company of people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. |
| 27 E c'è pericolo che non solo la nostra industria cada in discredito, ma anche il tempio di Diana, la gran dèa, sarà contato per niente e sarà abbattuta la maestà di colei che è venerata in tutta l'Asia, anzi in tutto il mondo. | 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may count for nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship." |
| 28 Udito questo, essi, trasportati dallo sdegno, si misero a gridare: Grande è la Diana degli Efesini. | 28 When they heard this they were enraged, and cried out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" |
| 29 E la città si riempì di confusione, e si precipitarono tutti verso il teatro, trascinando Gaio e Aristarco, Macedoni, compagni di Paolo. | 29 So the city was filled with the confusion; and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. |
| 30 E volendo Paolo presentarsi al popolo, i discepoli non lo permisero. | 30 Paul wished to go in among the crowd, but the disciples would not let him; |
| 31 Perfino alcuni degli Asiarchi suoi amici, mandarono a pregarlo che non andasse al teatro. | 31 some of the Asi-archs also, who were friends of his, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater. |
| 32 Intanto gridavano chi una cosa e chi un'altra. L'assemblea era in confusione ed i più non sapevano perchè si fossero adunati. | 32 Now some cried one thing, some another; for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. |
| 33 Trassero poi di tra la folla Alessandro che i Giudei spingevano avanti. E Alessandro, fatto cenno colla mano che tacessero, voleva dire la sua ragione al popolo. | 33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make a defense to the people. |
| 34 Ma, appena lo ebbero conosciuto come giudeo, eruppe da tutti una sola voce, e per quasi due ore gridarono: Grande è la Diana degli Efesini. | 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all with one voice cried out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" |
| 35 Avendo poi il segretario calmata la folla, disse: Efesini, chi è mai che non sappia come la città di Efeso è adoratrice della gran Diana, prole di Giove? | 35 And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? |
| 36 Non potendo questo esser negato, voi dovete quietarvi, senza far nulla d'avventato. | 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. |
| 37 Voi infatti avete menati questi uomini, nè sacrileghi, nè bestemmiatori della nostra dèa. | 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. |
| 38 Or se Demetrio e gli artigiani che sono con lui hanno qualche cosa contro qualcuno, ci sono i tribunali ed i proconsoli; si citino davanti a loro. | 38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against any one, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls; let them bring charges against one another. |
| 39 Se poi chiedete qualche altra cosa, potrà decidersi in una legittima adunanza. | 39 But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. |
| 40 Ma a causa dei fatti d'oggi, noi corriamo pericolo d'essere accusati di sedizione, non essendoci alcun motivo per cui possiamo render ragione di questo concorso. E detto questo, sciolse l'adunanza. | 40 For we are in danger of being charged with rioting today, there being no cause that we can give to justify this commotion." |
| 41 And when he had said this, he dismissed the assembly. |
