1 E quando ebbe finito di dare queste istruzioni ai suoi dodici discepoli Gesù partì di là, per insegnare e predicare nelle loro città.	1 When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.
2 Or Giovanni, avendo udite nella prigione le opere di Cristo, mandò due dei suoi discepoli	2 When John heard in prison of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him
3 a dirgli: Sei tu quello che ha da venire, o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?	3 with this question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"
4 E Gesù rispose loro: Andate a riferire a Giovanni quel che udite e vedete:	4 Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see:
5 i ciechi vedono, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati, i sordi odono, i morti risuscitano, ai poveri è annunziata la buona novella;	5 the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
6 ed è beato chi non si sarà scandalizzato di me.	6 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."
7 Partiti quelli, Gesù incominciò a parlare alle turbe di Giovanni e a dire: Che siete andati a vedere nel deserto? una canna agitata dal vento?	7 As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8 Ma che siete andati a vedere? un uomo vestito mollemente? Ecco, quelli che portano delle morbide vesti stanno nei palazzi dei re.	8 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces.
9 Ma che siete andati a vedere? un profeta? Sì, vi dico, e più che un profeta.	9 Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 Egli è colui del quale sta scritto: Ecco io mando innanzi a te il mio angelo per preparare la tua via dinanzi a to.	10 This is the one about whom it is written: 'Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.'
11 In verità vi dico: Tra i nati di donna non è mai sorto alcuno più grande di Giovanni Battista: eppure il più piccolo nel regno dei cieli è più grande di lui.	11 Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 E dai giorni di Giovanni Battista fino ad ora il regno dei cieli si acquista colla forza e se lo afferrano i violenti,	12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.
13 che tutti i profeti e la legge han profetato sino a Giovanni.	13 All the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John.
14 E se lo volete accettare, egli è quell'Elia che deve venire.	14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come.
15 Chi ha orecchi da intendere intenda.	15 Whoever has ears ought to hear.
16 Ma a chi paragonerò io questa generazione? E' simile a quei ragazzi che, seduti in piazza, gridano ai loro compagni:	16 "To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,
17 Abbiamo sonato e non avete ballato, abbiamo intonato lamenti e non avete pianto.	17 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.'
18 Difatti è venuto Giovanni, che non mangia e nè beve e dicono: Ha il demonio.	18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'
19 E' venuto il Figlio dell'uomo che mangia e beve, e dicono: Ecco un mangione e un bevono, amico di pubblicani e di peccatori. Così alla sapienza è stata resa giustizia dai suoi figli.	19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by her works."
20 Allora egli cominciò a rimproverare le città nelle quali era stata operata la maggior parte dei suoi miracoli, perchè non si erano ravvedute:	20 Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented.
21 Guai a te, Corozain, guai a te, Betsaida: chè se in Tiro e Sidone fossero avvenuti i miracoli fatti in mezzo a voi, già da gran tempo, in cilicio e cenere, avrebbero fatto penitenza.	21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
22 E però vi dico: a Tiro e a Sidone s'userà maggior clemenza che a voi nel giorno del giudizio.	22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23 E tu, Cafarnao, sarai forse esaltata fino al cielo? Tu scenderai sino all'inferno: chè se in Sodoma fossero avvenuti i miracoli operati in te, forse sussisterebbe aneli'oggi.	23 And as for you, Capernaum: 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.' For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 E però vi dico: s'userà maggior clemenza al paese di Sodoma che a te nel giorno del giudizio.	24 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."
25 Allora Gesù prese a dire: Ti ringrazio, o Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, perchè hai nascoste queste cose ai dotti e ai sapienti e le hai rivelate ai piccoli.	25 At that time Jesus said in reply, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.
26 Così, o Padre, perchè sì ti è piaciuto.	26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
27 Tutto è stato affidato a me dal Padre mio; e nessuno conosce il Figlio se non il Padre; e nessuno conosce il Padre tranne il Figlio e colui al quale il Figlio avrà voluto rivelarlo.	27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.
28 Venite a me voi tutti che siete affaticati e oppressi, ed io vi ristorerò.	28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Prendete su di voi il mio giogo, e imparate da me che sono mansueto ed umile di cuore; e troverete riposo alle anime vostre;	29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves.
30 perché il mio giogo è soave e leggero il mio carico.	30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."
