1 « La vita dell'uomo sulla terra è una milizia, e i suoi giorni sono come la giornata d'un salariato.	1 The life of man upon earth is a warfare, and his days are like the days of a hireling.
2 Come lo schiavo sospira l'ombra, e l'operaio aspetta la fine del suo lavoro,	2 As a servant longeth for the shade, as the hireling looketh for the end of his work;
3 così, essendomi toccati mesi vuoti, ho contato le notti d'affanno.	3 So I also have had empty months, and have numbered to myself wearisome nights.
4 Se mi metto a dormire, dico: Quando mi leverò? E poi di nuovo dovrò aspettare la sera, pieno d'affanni fino alla notte.	4 If I lie down to sleep, I shall say: When shall arise? and again I shall look for the evening, and shall be filled with sorrows even till darkness.
5 La mia carne è rivestita di putredine e di croste terrose, la mia pelle è secca e raggrinzita,	5 My flesh is clothed with rottenness and the filth of dust, my skin is withered and drawn together.
6 i miei giorni son passati più veloci dell'attimo in cui dal tessitore è recisa la tela, e sono svaniti senza speranza.	6 My days have passed more swiftly than the web is cut by the weaver, and are consumed without any hope.
7 Ricordati che la mia vita è un soffio, che l'occhio mio non tornerà a vedere la felicità.	7 Remember that my life is but wind, and my eyes shall not return to see good things.
8 Lo sguardo dell'uomo non mi vedrà: mi cercherai ed io non sarò più.	8 Nor shall the sight of man behold me: thy eyes are upon me, and I shall be no more.
9 Come si consuma una nube e dilegua, così chi scende nel soggiorno dei morti non ne uscirà.	9 As a cloud is consumed, and passeth away: so he that shall go down to hell shall not come up.
10 Non tornerà più nella sua casa, nè più lo ravviserà la sua dimora.	10 Nor shall he return my more into his house, neither shall his place know him any more.
11 Per questo non risparmierò la mia bocca, parlerò nell'angoscia del mio spirito, ragionerò nell'amarezza dell'anima mia.	11 Wherefore I will not spare my month, I will speak in the affliction of my spirit: I will talk with the bitterness of my soul.
12 Son forse io il mare, o un mostro marino, chè m'hai chiuso in un carcere?	12 Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou hast enclosed me in a prison?
13 Se io dico: il mio letto mi consolerà, avrò sollievo parlando meco sul mio giaciglio,	13 If I say: My bed shall comfort me, and I shall be relieved speaking with myself on my couch:
14 tu mi spaventerai con sogni, mi terrai agitato con orrende visioni.	14 Thou wilt frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions.
15 Per questo l'anima mia preferisce d'essere soffocata, e le mie ossa bramano la morte:	15 So that my soul rather chooseth hanging, and my bones death.
16 son senza speranza; la vita mi fugge. Abbi pietà di me, perchè i miei giorni sono un niente.	16 I have done with hope, I shall now live no longer: spare me, for my days are nothing.
17 Che cosa è l'uomo, che tu ne fai tanto conto? E perchè poni in lui il tuo cuore?	17 What is a man that thou shouldst magnify him? or why dost thou set thy heart upon him?
18 Lo visiti la mattina presto e lo metti subito alla prova.	18 Thou visitest him early in the morning, and thou provest him suddenly.
19 Quando avrai pietà di me, e mi permetterai d'inghiottire la mia saliva?	19 How long wilt thou not spare me, nor suffer me to swallow down my spittle?
20 Ho peccato: che devo farti, o custode degli uomini? Perchè mi hai posto contro di te, ed io son divenuto grave a me stesso?	20 I have sinned: what shall I do to thee, O keeper of men? why hast thou set me opposite to thee, and I am become burdensome to myself?
21 Perchè non perdoni il mio peccato? Perchè non togli la mia iniquità? Ecco presto dormirò nella polvere, e se domattina mi cercherai, io non sarò più ».	21 Why dost thou not remove my sin, and why dost thou not take away my iniquity? Behold now I shall sleep in the dust: and if thou seek me in the morning, I shall not be.
