1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè nel deserto del Sinai, nella tenda del convegno, il primo del secondo mese, nel secondo anno dalla loro uscita dalla terra d'Egitto, e disse:	1 In the year following that of the Israelites' departure from the land of Egypt, on the first day of the second month, the LORD said to Moses in the meeting tent in the desert of Sinai:

4 Sarà con voi un uomo per tribù, un uomo che sia a capo della sua casa paterna.	4 "To assist you there shall be a man from each tribe, the head of his ancestral house.
5 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che vi assisteranno: per Ruben: Elisur, figlio di Sedeur;	5 These are the names of those who are to assist you: from Reuben: Elizur, son of Shedeur;
6 per Simeone: Selumiel, figlio di Surisaddai;	6 from Simeon: Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai;
7 per Giuda: Nacason, figlio di Amminadab;	7 from Judah: Nahshon, son of Amminadab;
8 per Issacar: Natanael, figlio di Suar;	8 from Issachar: Nethanel, son of Zuar;
9 per Zabulon: Eliab, figlio di Chelon;	9 from Zebulun: Eliab, son of Helon;
10 per i figli di Giuseppe: per Efraim, Elisama, figlio di Ammiud; per Manasse, Gamliel, figlio di Pedasur;	10 from Ephraim: Elishama, son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh: Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, for the descendants of Joseph;
11 per Beniamino: Abidan, figlio di Ghideoni;	11 from Benjamin: Abidan, son of Gideoni;
12 per Dan: Achiezer, figlio di Ammisaddai;	12 from Dan: Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai;
13 per Aser: Paghiel, figlio di Ocran;	13 from Asher: Pagiel, son of Ochran;
14 per Gad: Eliasaf, figlio di Deuel;	14 from Gad: Eliasaph, son of Reuel;
15 per Neftali: Achira, figlio di Enan.	15 from Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan."
16 Questi sono i chiamati della comunità, capi delle tribù dei loro padri, alla testa dei gruppi d'Israele".	16 These were councilors of the community, princes of their ancestral tribes, chiefs of the troops of Israel.
17 Mosè ed Aronne presero quegli uomini che erano stati designati per nome,	17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated,
18 radunarono tutta la comunità il primo del secondo mese, e si registrarono per parentela in base alle loro famiglie, le loro case paterne, contando i nomi da vent'anni in su, secondo le loro teste.	18 and assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. Every man of twenty years or more then declared his name and lineage according to clan and ancestral house,
19 Come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, li passarono in rassegna nel deserto del Sinai.	19 as the LORD had commanded Moses. This is their census as taken in the desert of Sinai.
20 I figli di Ruben, primogenito d'Israele, i loro discendenti, per famiglie e case paterne, contando tutti i maschi uno per uno, da vent'anni in su, di chi poteva essere schierato nell'esercito:	20 Of the descendants of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
21 i recensiti della tribù di Ruben furono 46.500.	21 forty-six thousand five hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Reuben.

46 in totale furono 603.550.	46 was six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.
47 Ma tra loro non furono recensiti i leviti, secondo la tribù dei loro padri.	47 The Levites, however, were not registered by ancestral tribe with the others.
48 Il Signore aveva detto a Mosè:	48 For the LORD had told Moses,
49 "Solo la tribù di Levi non passerai in rassegna e non li recensirai tra i figli d'Israele.	49 "The tribe of Levi alone you shall not enroll nor include in the census along with the other Israelites.
50 Ma disponi che i leviti si prendano cura della dimora della testimonianza, di tutti i suoi arredi e di tutto quello che ha: trasporteranno la dimora e tutti i suoi arredi, faranno il servizio e si accamperanno intorno alla dimora.	50 You are to give the Levites charge of the Dwelling of the commandments with all its equipment and all that belongs to it. It is they who shall carry the Dwelling with all its equipment and who shall be its ministers. They shall therefore camp around the Dwelling.
51 Quando la dimora dovrà spostarsi, i leviti la smonteranno, e quando la dimora si accamperà i leviti la erigeranno. Ogni estraneo che si avvicinerà sarà messo a morte.	51 When the Dwelling is to move on, the Levites shall take it down; when the Dwelling is to be pitched, it is the Levites who shall set it up. Any layman who comes near it shall be put to death.
52 I figli d'Israele si accamperanno ognuno nel proprio accampamento, ognuno presso la propria insegna, secondo le loro schiere.	52 While the other Israelites shall camp by companies, each in his own division of the camp,
53 I leviti si accamperanno intorno alla dimora della testimonianza, in modo che non ci sia indignazione contro la comunità dei figli d'Israele. I leviti custodiranno il servizio della dimora della testimonianza".	53 the Levites shall camp around the Dwelling of the commandments. Otherwise God's wrath will strike the Israelite community. The Levites, then, shall have charge of the Dwelling of the commandments."
54 I figli d'Israele si conformarono a tutto quello che il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e così fecero.	54 All this the Israelites fulfilled as the LORD had commanded Moses.
