1 After a while, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife with a kid; and he said, "I will go in to my wife in the chamber." But her father would not allow him to go in.	1 Bizonyos idő múltán azonban, amikor éppen a búzaaratás napjai közeledtek, elment Sámson, hogy meglátogassa feleségét, s vitt neki egy kecskegödölyét. De amikor szokása szerint be akart menni hálókamrájába, az asszony apja eltiltotta és azt mondta:
2 And her father said, "I really thought that you utterly hated her; so I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? Pray take her instead."	2 »Azt hittem, hogy meggyűlölted, s azért odaadtam barátodnak. Van azonban neki egy nővére, aki fiatalabb és szebb nála, legyen az a feleséged helyette.«
3 And Samson said to them, "This time I shall be blameless in regard to the Philistines, when I do them mischief."	3 Azt mondta neki Sámson: »Ettől a naptól kezdve nem érhet engem vád a filiszteusok részéről, ha rosszat teszek nektek.«
4 So Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches; and he turned them tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails.	4 Azzal elment, összefogdosott háromszáz rókát, egymáshoz kötözte farkukat, csóvákat kötözött közéjük,
5 And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards.	5 azokat tűzzel meggyújtotta, aztán elengedte őket, hogy fussanak szét mindenfelé. Azok legott belementek a filiszteusok vetésébe és felgyújtották, úgyhogy elégett a már összehordott gabona is, a még szárban álló is, sőt a szőlőket és az olajfakerteket is megemésztette a láng.
6 Then the Philistines said, "Who has done this?" And they said, "Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion." And the Philistines came up, and burned her and her father with fire.	6 Azt mondták erre a filiszteusok: »Ki tette ezt?« Azt mondták nekik: »Sámson, a tamnátai ember veje cselekedte, mert az elvette feleségét, s máshoz adta.« Felmentek erre a filiszteusok, s elégették az asszonyt is, az apját is.
7 And Samson said to them, "If this is what you do, I swear I will be avenged upon you, and after that I will quit."	7 Azt mondta nekik Sámson: »Ámbár ezt cselekedtétek, mégsem nyugszom mindaddig, amíg még egyszer bosszút nem állok rajtatok.«
8 And he smote them hip and thigh with great slaughter; and he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Etam.	8 Meg is verte őket akkora veréssel, hogy rémületükben lábukat a hasuk alá húzták. Aztán lement, és Etám sziklabarlangjában telepedett meg.
9 Then the Philistines came up and encamped in Judah, and made a raid on Lehi.	9 Erre felvonultak a filiszteusok Júda földjére és tábort ütöttek azon a helyen, amelyet később Lechinek, azaz Állkapocsnak neveztek, s ott felállt a seregük.
10 And the men of Judah said, "Why have you come up against us?" They said, "We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he did to us."	10 Azt mondták ekkor nekik a Júda törzséből valók: »Miért jöttetek fel ellenünk?« Azok ezt felelték: »Azért jöttünk fel, hogy megkötözzük Sámsont, s visszafizessük neki, amit velünk művelt.«
11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, "Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?" And he said to them, "As they did to me, so have I done to them."	11 Erre lement háromezer férfi Júdából Etám sziklabarlangjához, s azt mondták Sámsonnak: »Nem tudod, hogy a filiszteusok uralkodnak rajtunk? Miért művelted ezt?« Ő így felelt nekik: »Ahogy ők tettek velem, úgy tettem velük.«
12 And they said to him, "We have come down to bind you, that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines." And Samson said to them, "Swear to me that you will not fall upon me yourselves."	12 Erre ők így szóltak: »Azért jöttünk, hogy megkötözzünk, s a filiszteusok kezébe adjunk.« Azt mondta nekik Sámson: »Esküdjetek meg, s ígérjétek meg nekem, hogy nem öltök meg engem.«
13 They said to him, "No; we will only bind you and give you into their hands; we will not kill you." So they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.	13 Azok azt mondták: »Nem ölünk meg, csak megkötözünk és kiszolgáltatunk.« Meg is kötözték két új kötéllel, s felhozták Etám sziklájából.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the ropes which were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands.	14 Amikor azonban ő az Állkapocs-helyére érkezett, s a filiszteusok ujjongva eléje jöttek, megszállta az Úr lelke, s úgy lemállottak s lefoszlottak róla a kötelek, amelyekkel megkötözték, mint ahogy szét szokott foszlani a len, amikor tűz éri.
15 And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put out his hand and seized it, and with it he slew a thousand men.	15 Talált aztán egy ott heverő szamár állkapcsot, s azt felkapta és megölt vele ezer férfit.
16 And Samson said, "With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of an ass have I slain a thousand men."	16 Erre így szólt: »Szamár állkapcsával, szamárcsikó állcsontjával Őket íme, eltöröltem, ezer embert leütöttem.«
17 When he had finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramathlehi.	17 Amikor aztán befejezte ezt az éneket, elhajította kezéből az állcsontot, s elnevezte azt a helyet Rámát-Lechinek, ami annyit jelent, mint Állkapocs-magaslat.
18 And he was very thirsty, and he called on the LORD and said, "Thou hast granted this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and shall I now die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?"	18 Mivel igen megszomjazott, felkiáltott az Úrhoz és azt mondta: »Te adtad szolgád kezébe ezt a nagy győzelmet és diadalt: s íme, szomjan kell halnom, s a körülmetéletlenek kezébe jutnom.«
19 And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and there came water from it; and when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore; it is at Lehi to this day.	19 Erre az Úr megnyitotta a Zápfogat a Szamár-állkapcsában, s víz fakadt belőle. Amint ő ebből ivott, felüdült, s visszanyerte erejét. Ezért nevezik azt a helyet az Állkapocs mellől felkiáltó forrásának mind a mai napig.
20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.	20 Húsz esztendeig bíráskodott Izraelen a filiszteusok idejében.
