1 After a while, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife with a kid; and he said, "I will go in to my wife in the chamber." But her father would not allow him to go in.	1 (Mais) Peu de temps après, vers le temps de la moisson des blés, Samson, voulant voir sa femme, vint lui apporter un chevreau ; et comme il voulait entrer dans sa chambre selon sa (la) coutume, le père l'en empêcha en disant :
2 And her father said, "I really thought that you utterly hated her; so I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? Pray take her instead."	2 J'ai cru que tu avais de l'aversion pour elle ; c'est pourquoi je l'ai donné à un de tes amis. Mais elle a une sœur qui est plus jeune et plus belle qu'elle ; prends-la pour ta femme à sa place.
3 And Samson said to them, "This time I shall be blameless in regard to the Philistines, when I do them mischief."	3 Samson lui répondit : Désormais les Philistins n'auront pas à se plaindre de moi si je leur fais du mal.
4 So Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches; and he turned them tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails.	4 Il s'en alla et prit trois cents renards, qu'il lia queue à queue, et attacha des torches entre les queues,
5 And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards.	5 et, y ayant mis le feu, il lâcha les renards afin qu'ils courussent de tous côtés. Les renards allèrent aussitôt dans les blés (moissons) des Philistins, qui s'embrasèrent, de sorte que les blés, qui étaient déjà en gerbe, et ceux qui étaient encore sur pied furent brûlés ; et le feu consuma jusqu'aux vignes et aux plants d'oliviers.
6 Then the Philistines said, "Who has done this?" And they said, "Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion." And the Philistines came up, and burned her and her father with fire.	6 Alors les Philistins dirent : Qui a fait cela ? On leur répondit : C'est Samson, gendre du Thamnathéen, qui a fait tout ce mal, parce que son beau-père lui a ôté sa femme et l'a donnée à un autre. Les Philistins montèrent donc et brûlèrent la femme de Samson avec son père.
7 And Samson said to them, "If this is what you do, I swear I will be avenged upon you, and after that I will quit."	7 Alors Samson leur dit : Quoique vous ayez agi ainsi, je veux néanmoins me venger encore de vous ; et après cela je me tiendrai en repos.
8 And he smote them hip and thigh with great slaughter; and he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Etam.	8 Et il les battit et en fit un grand carnage, de sorte que, mettant la jambe sur la cuisse, ils demeuraient tout interdits. Descendant ensuite, il habita dans la caverne du rocher d'Etam.
9 Then the Philistines came up and encamped in Judah, and made a raid on Lehi.	9 Les Philistins, montant dans le pays de Juda, campèrent au lieu qui depuis fut appelé Léchi, c'est-à-dire (la) Mâchoire, où leur troupe se dispersa (fut dissipée).
10 And the men of Judah said, "Why have you come up against us?" They said, "We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he did to us."	10 Et les hommes de la tribu de Juda leur dirent : Pourquoi êtes-vous montés contre nous ? Les Philistins leur répondirent : Nous sommes venus pour lier Samson, afin de lui rendre le mal (ce) qu'il nous a fait.
11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, "Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?" And he said to them, "As they did to me, so have I done to them."	11 Alors trois mille hommes de la tribu de Juda vinrent à la caverne du rocher d'Etam, et dirent à Samson : Ne sais-tu pas que nous sommes assujettis aux Philistins ? Pourquoi les as-tu traités de la sorte ? Il leur répondit : Je leur ai rendu le mal qu'ils m'ont fait.
12 And they said to him, "We have come down to bind you, that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines." And Samson said to them, "Swear to me that you will not fall upon me yourselves."	12 Nous sommes venus, dirent-ils pour te lier et pour te livrer entre les mains des Philistins. Jurez-moi, repartit Samson, et promettez-moi que vous ne me tuerez point.
13 They said to him, "No; we will only bind you and give you into their hands; we will not kill you." So they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.	13 Ils lui répondirent : Nous ne te tuerons point ; mais après t'avoir lié, nous te livrerons aux Philistins. Ils le lièrent avec deux cordes neuves, et ils l'enlevèrent du rocher d'Etam.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the ropes which were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands.	14 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés au lieu appelé la Mâchoire, les Philistins vinrent à sa rencontre avec de grands cris ; et l'Esprit du Seigneur saisit tout à coup Samson, qui rompit et brisa les cordes dont il était lié, de même que le lin se consume lorsqu'il sent le feu ;
15 And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put out his hand and seized it, and with it he slew a thousand men.	15 et ayant trouvé là une mâchoire d'âne (, c'est-à-dire une mandibule d'âne) qui était à terre, il la prit et en tua mille hommes.
16 And Samson said, "With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of an ass have I slain a thousand men."	16 Et il dit : Je les ai défaits avec une mâchoire d'âne, avec la mâchoire (mandibule) d'un poulain d'ânesse, et j'en ai tué (frappé) mille hommes.
17 When he had finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramathlehi.	17 Et après qu'il eut dit ces paroles en chantant, il jeta de sa main la mâchoire, et appela ce lieu-là Ramathléchi, c'est-à-dire (l')Elévation de la mâchoire.
18 And he was very thirsty, and he called on the LORD and said, "Thou hast granted this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and shall I now die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?"	18 Et pressé d'une grande soif, il cria au Seigneur et il dit : C'est vous qui avez sauvé votre serviteur et qui lui avez donné cette grande victoire ; et maintenant je meurs de soif, et je tomberai entre les mains de ces incirconcis.
19 And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and there came water from it; and when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore; it is at Lehi to this day.	19 Le Seigneur ouvrit donc une des grosses dents (molaire) de cette mâchoire d'âne et il en sortit de l'eau ; Samson, en ayant bu, revint de sa défaillance et reprit ses forces. C'est pourquoi ce lieu a été appelé jusqu'à ce jour la Fontaine sortie de la mâchoire par l'invocation de Dieu.
20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.	20 Et Samson jugea Israël pendant vingt ans, au temps des Philistins.
