1 And when it was decided that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort, named Julius.	1 Quando fu deciso di iniziare la nostra navigazione verso l'Italia, diedero in consegna Paolo e alcuni altri prigionieri a un centurione di nome Giulio, della coorte Augusta.
2 And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to the ports along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica.	2 Saliti su una nave di Adramitto, che stava per far vela verso i porti dell'Asia, prendemmo il mare avendo con noi Aristarco, un macedone di Tessalònica.
3 The next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for.	3 Il giorno seguente approdammo a Sidone e Giulio, che trattava Paolo con benevolenza, permise che si recasse dagli amici per riceverne i buoni uffici.
4 And putting to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us.	4 Salpati di là facemmo vela sotto Cipro, poiché i venti erano contrari,
5 And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia.	5 e attraversato il mare di Cilicia e di Panfilia giungemmo a Mira della Licia.
6 There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and put us on board.	6 Quivi il centurione trovò una nave alessandrina in rotta verso l'Italia e ci fece salire su di essa.
7 We sailed slowly for a number of days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind did not allow us to go on, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone.	7 Per lunghi giorni navigammo lentamente e a stento giungemmo di fronte a Cnido. Poi il vento non ci permise di approdare, navigammo sotto Creta di fronte a Salmòne
8 Coasting along it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.	8 e, costeggiandola a stento, arrivammo a una località chiamata Buoni Porti, presso la quale c'era la città di Lasèa.
9 As much time had been lost, and the voyage was already dangerous because the fast had already gone by, Paul advised them,	9 Essendo passato molto tempo ed essendo ormai malsicura la navigazione, poiché era già trascorso anche il giorno del digiuno, Paolo li ammoniva dicendo:
10 saying, "Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives."	10 "Amici, vedo che il continuare la navigazione sarebbe temerario e potrebbe portare molto danno non solo per il carico e per la nave, ma anche per le nostre vite".
11 But the centurion paid more attention to the captain and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.	11 Ma il centurione si fidava di più del capitano e dell'armatore che delle parole di Paolo.
12 And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to put to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, looking northeast and southeast, and winter there.	12 E poiché il porto non era adatto per svernare, i più presero la decisione di salpare di là, nella speranza di poter giungere a svernare a Fenice, un porto di Creta che guarda a libeccio e a maestrale.
13 And when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close inshore.	13 Levatosi un vento leggero dal sud, ritennero di poter attuare il loro progetto e, levata l'àncora, si misero a costeggiare Creta.
14 But soon a tempestuous wind, called the northeaster, struck down from the land;	14 Ma dopo non molto si scatenò sull'isola un vento d'uragano, chiamato euroaquilone.
15 and when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven.	15 La nave fu trascinata via, non potendo resistere al vento, e ci lasciavamo portare alla deriva.
16 And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we managed with difficulty to secure the boat;	16 Filando sotto un'isoletta chiamata Càudas, a stento riuscimmo a restare padroni della scialuppa.
17 after hoisting it up, they took measures to undergird the ship; then, fearing that they should run on the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven.	17 L'alzarono su e usarono i mezzi di soccorso per cingere di gomene la nave. Temendo poi di incorrere nella Sirte, calarono l'attrezzo, lasciandolo così portare alla deriva.
18 As we were violently storm-tossed, they began next day to throw the cargo overboard;	18 Poiché erano violentemente battuti dalla tempesta, il giorno seguente fecero gettito del carico,
19 and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackle of the ship.	19 e nel terzo giorno con le loro mani buttarono via l'attrezzatura della nave.
20 And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many a day, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.	20 Per più giorni non si videro né sole né stelle: la tempesta si manteneva violenta e si andava ormai perdendo ogni speranza di salvarci.
21 As they had been long without food, Paul then came forward among them and said, "Men, you should have listened to me, and should not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss.	21 Da molto tempo non si mangiava più. Allora Paolo, ritto in piedi in mezzo a loro, disse: "Amici, si sarebbe dovuto ascoltarmi e non far vela da Creta. Ci saremmo risparmiati questo rischio mortale e questa iattura.
22 I now bid you take heart; for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.	22 Ma ora vi esorto a stare di buon animo: infatti non vi sarà alcuna perdita di vite umane, ma solo della nave.
23 For this very night there stood by me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship,	23 Infatti in questa notte mi si è presentato un angelo di Dio, di quel Dio a cui appartengo e a cui io servo,
24 and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar; and lo, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'	24 dicendomi: "Non temere, Paolo; tu devi comparire di fronte a Cesare, ed ecco, Dio ti ha fatto grazia di tutti coloro che navigano con te".
25 So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.	25 Perciò state di buon animo, amici: perché ho fede in Dio che le cose andranno così come mi è stato detto.
26 But we shall have to run on some island."	26 Ci dovremo imbattere in un'isola".
27 When the fourteenth night had come, as we were drifting across the sea of Adria, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land.	27 Essendo ormai la quattordicesima notte che eravamo sbattuti nell'Adriatico, verso la metà della notte i marinai ebbero l'impressione che si stesse avvicinando terra.
28 So they sounded and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they sounded again and found fifteen fathoms.	28 Calato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti braccia di profondità; poco dopo, gettando di nuovo lo scandaglio, trovarono quindici braccia.
29 And fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let out four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come.	29 Temendo che andassimo a cadere contro delle scogliere, dalla prua calarono le quattro ancore e aspettavano ansiosi che si facesse presto giorno.
30 And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under pretense of laying out anchors from the bow,	30 Ma poiché i marinai cercavano di fuggire dalla nave, e avevano calato la scialuppa in mare col pretesto di volere tendere delle ancore da prua,
31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved."	31 Paolo disse al centurione e ai soldati: "Se costoro non rimangono sulla nave, voi non potete essere salvi".
32 Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let it go.	32 Allora i soldati tagliarono le funi della scialuppa e la lasciarono cadere.
33 As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing.	33 Mentre si aspettava che cominciasse a farsi giorno, Paolo esortava tutti a prender cibo dicendo: "Oggi sono quattordici giorni che state in attesa digiuni, senza aver preso nulla.
34 Therefore I urge you to take some food; it will give you strength, since not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you."	34 Perciò io vi esorto a prendere cibo: ciò infatti è necessario per la vostra salute. Infatti non si perderà alcun capello del vostro capo".
35 And when he had said this, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat.	35 Dette queste cose, prese del pane, rese grazie a Dio in presenza di tutti e, spezzatolo, cominciò a mangiare.
36 Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves.	36 Allora tutti, fattisi coraggio, presero anch'essi del cibo.
37 (We were in all two hundred and seventy-six persons in the ship.)	37 Eravamo in tutto nella nave duecentosettantasei persone.
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.	38 Dopo aver mangiato a sazietà, alleggerirono la nave gettando il frumento nel mare.
39 Now when it was day, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned if possible to bring the ship ashore.	39 Quando si fece giorno, non riuscivano a riconoscere la terra, ma scorgevano un'insenatura con una spiaggia e là volevano, se fosse stato possibile, spingere la nave.
40 So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that tied the rudders; then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach.	40 Staccarono le ancore tutt'intorno e le lasciarono andare a mare, allentando nello stesso tempo gli ormeggi dei timoni, e alzato l'artimone al vento tentavano d'approdare alla spiaggia.
41 But striking a shoal they ran the vessel aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable, and the stern was broken up by the surf.	41 Ma si imbatterono in un altifondo tra due correnti e fecero incagliare la nave: la prua, piantata nel fondo, rimaneva immobile, e la poppa veniva sfasciata dalla violenza delle onde.
42 The soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape;	42 I soldati presero la decisione di uccidere i prigionieri, perché qualcuno non sfuggisse a nuoto.
43 but the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their purpose. He ordered those who could swim to throw themselves overboard first and make for the land,	43 Ma il centurione, volendo salvare Paolo, li impedì dall'attuare il loro proposito e comandò a quelli che erano in grado di nuotare di gettarsi per primi in mare e di raggiungere terra;
44 and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all escaped to land.	44 poi gli altri, chi su tavole, chi su qualche relitto della nave. E così tutti giunsero a terra incolumi.
