1 A copy of a letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were to be taken to Babylon as captives by the king of the Babylonians, to give them the message which God had commanded him.	1 Per li peccati, che voi commetteste inanzi a Dio, sarete menati in prigione in Babilonia da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia.
2 Because of the sins which you have committed before God, you will be taken to Babylon as captives by Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians.	2 Ed entrati in Babilonia, starete ivi molti anni, e per lungo tempo, infino a VII generazioni; e dopo questo vi menerò indi con pace.
3 Therefore when you have come to Babylon you will remain there for many years, for a long time, up to seven generations; after that I will bring you away from there in peace.	3 Ma ora vederete in Babilonia li iddii d'oro e d'argento e di pietra e di legno nelli omeri esser portati, dimostranti paura (e maraviglia) alle genti.
4 Now in Babylon you will see gods made of silver and gold and wood, which are carried on men's shoulders and inspire fear in the heathen.	4 Adunque vedete acciò che voi non siate fatti simili a quelli fatti d'altrui, e pieni di paura, e la paura vi pigli in loro.
5 So take care not to become at all like the foreigners or to let fear for these gods possess you, when you see the multitude before and behind them worshiping them.	5 E veduta la turba di dietro e dinanzi, adoranti dite nelli vostri cuori: o Signore, conviene che tu sii adorato.
6 But say in your heart, "It is thou, O Lord, whom we must worship."	6 E lo mio angelo si è con voi; e io medesimo richiederò le vostre anime.
7 For my angel is with you, and he is watching your lives.	7 Però che la loro lingua sì è pulita dal fabbro, e anco è inorata e inargentata; e sono falsi, e non possono parlare.
8 Their tongues are smoothed by the craftsman, and they themselves are overlaid with gold and silver; but they are false and cannot speak.	8 E sì come alla vergine amante piacciono li belli vestimenti, così si toglie l'oro, e sonne fabbricati.
9 People take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods, as they would for a girl who loves ornaments;	9 E hanno certamente corone d'oro sopra i loro capelli, loro iddii; onde sottraono li sacerdoti da loro oro e argento, e quello si tolgono per loro medesimi.
10 and sometimes the priests secretly take gold and silver from their gods and spend it upon themselves,	10 E dànno di quello a quelle tengono mala vita, e ornano le meretrici; e quando ancora ricevono quello dalle meretrici, adornano i loro iddii.
11 and even give some of it to the harlots in the brothel. They deck their gods out with garments like men--these gods of silver and gold and wood,	11 Ma questi non sono liberati dalla ruggine e dalla tignuola.
12 which cannot save themselves from rust and corrosion. When they have been dressed in purple robes,	12 E coperti quelli di veste di porpora, forbono le loro faccie per la polvere della casa, la quale polvere v'è molto grande tra loro.
13 their faces are wiped because of the dust from the temple, which is thick upon them.	13 E hanno la verga regale (in mano nella casa) come uno uomo, come lo giudice della contrada, il quale non uccide quello che pecca contro a loro.
14 Like a local ruler the god holds a scepter, though unable to destroy any one who offends it.	14 E anche hanno in mano lo coltello e la scure; ma sè della battaglia e dalli ladroni non lìberano; per la qual cosa vi sia manifesto, che non sono iddii.
15 It has a dagger in its right hand, and has an axe; but it cannot save itself from war and robbers.	15 Adunque non li abbiate in riverenza; però che come lo vaso dell' uomo, rotto, si fa sanza utilità, così sono fatti i loro iddii.
16 Therefore they evidently are not gods; so do not fear them.	16 E posti quelli e ordinati nella casa, li loro occhi sono pieni di polvere dai piedi di quelli che v' entrano.
17 For just as one's dish is useless when it is broken, so are the gods of the heathen, when they have been set up in the temples. Their eyes are full of the dust raised by the feet of those who enter.	17 E come sono chiuse le porte a colui il quale offende lo re, ovvero come lo morto portato al sepolcro, così guardano li sacerdoti li usci con chiusure e con istanghe, acciò che non siano spogliati da' ladroni.
18 And just as the gates are shut on every side upon a man who has offended a king, as though he were sentenced to death, so the priests make their temples secure with doors and locks and bars, in order that they may not be plundered by robbers.	18 E accendono le lucerne a loro, e molte, delle quali non possono vedere niuna, (cioè quelli iddii non le possono vedere); ma sono come le travi nelle case.
19 They light lamps, even more than they light for themselves, though their gods can see none of them.	19 E i loro cuori dicono che leccano li serpenti, li quali sono di terra, quando li mangiano e le loro vestimenta, e nulla sentono.
20 They are just like a beam of the temple, but men say their hearts have melted, when worms from the earth devour them and their robes. They do not notice	20 Le loro faccie sono nere per lo fumo lo quale si fa nella casa.
21 when their faces have been blackened by the smoke of the temple.	21 E le nottole volano sopra [il loro corpo e] il loro capo, e le rondini e li uccelli, e simigliantemente li gatti (e barbagianni).
22 Bats, swallows, and birds light on their bodies and heads; and so do cats.	22 Per la quale cosa sappiate che non sono iddii. Adunque non li temete.
23 From this you will know that they are not gods; so do not fear them.	23 E anche l' oro, ch' elli hanno, è ad ornamento; e se non che alcuno forbe la ruggine loro, non risplenderebbono; e quando ci era soffiato (trombe), non sentivano nulla.
24 As for the gold which they wear for beauty--they will not shine unless some one wipes off the rust; for even when they were being cast, they had no feeling.	24 E sono comperati d'ogni prezzo, nelli quali non è lo spirito.
25 They are bought at any cost, but there is no breath in them.	25 E sono portati sanza piedi in su le spalle, dimostranti la sua vergogna alli uomini. E siano anche confusi quegli che li adorano.
26 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, revealing to mankind their worthlessness.	26 Però (che) se caderanno in terra, non [si] leveranno da sè medesimi; e anche se niuno lo leverà suso, non starà fermo per sè; ma istarà, come morto, appiccato alli omeri di colui che lo tiene.
27 And those who serve them are ashamed because through them these gods are made to stand, lest they fall to the ground. If any one sets one of them upright, it cannot move itself; and if it is tipped over, it cannot straighten itself; but gifts are placed before them just as before the dead.	27 I loro sacerdoti vendono le loro ostie, e usano in mala parte; somigliantemente le femmine loro, divellendo, non fanno parte nè ad infermo nè a mendicante.
28 The priests sell the sacrifices that are offered to these gods and use the money; and likewise their wives preserve some with salt, but give none to the poor or helpless.	28 E del loro sacrificio ne toccano feccia e altra bruttura. Sappiendo certo per questo che non sono iddii, non li temete.
29 Sacrifices to them may be touched by women in menstruation or at childbirth. Since you know by these things that they are not gods, do not fear them.	29 E onde sono chiamati iddii? Però che le femine pongono ostie alli iddii dello oro e dello argento e dello legno;
30 For why should they be called gods? Women serve meals for gods of silver and gold and wood;	30 e li sacerdoti seggono nelle case loro, e hanno le gonnelle istracciate, e lo capo e la barba rasa, e li loro capi sono ignudi.
31 and in their temples the priests sit with their clothes rent, their heads and beards shaved, and their heads uncovered.	31 E ruggono gridanti [con]tra li loro iddii, sì come li morti nella cena.
32 They howl and shout before their gods as some do at a funeral feast for a man who has died.	32 Li sacerdoti tolgono loro le vestimenta, e vestonne le loro mogli e li loro figliuoli.
33 The priests take some of the clothing of their gods to clothe their wives and children.	33 Se sostengono alcuno male da alcuno, ovver alcuno bene, non possono retribuire male ovver bene; non possono constituire re, nè lo possono torre.
34 Whether one does evil to them or good, they will not be able to repay it. They cannot set up a king or depose one.	34 Somigliantemente non possono dare ricchezze, nè rendere altrui male. E se alcuno faceva loro voto (ad alcuno), e non compia lo voto, non gliele richieggiono.
35 Likewise they are not able to give either wealth or money; if one makes a vow to them and does not keep it, they will not require it.	35 Non liberano l'uomo da morte, e non liberano quello che puote manco da colui ch' è più potente (di loro).
36 They cannot save a man from death or rescue the weak from the strong.	36 E a uomo cieco non renderanno lume; e non possono liberare l'uomo dalla necessitade.
37 They cannot restore sight to a blind man; they cannot rescue a man who is in distress.	37 Non hanno misericordia della vedova, e non fanno bene alli orfani.
38 They cannot take pity on a widow or do good to an orphan.	38 Sono simili alle pietre della montagna li loro iddii; sono di pietra e di legno, e d'oro e d'argento. Chiunque li adora, sarà confuso.
39 These things that are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver are like stones from the mountain, and those who serve them will be put to shame.	39 Adunque come si puote dire o pensare che siano iddii?
40 Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chaldeans themselves dishonor them;	40 Chè ancora li Caldei non adorano quelli; i quali Caldei, quando odono (così) uno muto che non parla, offeriscono quello a Bel (cioè quello idolo), addomandando da lui, che lo faccia parlare;
41 for when they see a dumb man, who cannot speak, they bring him and pray Bel that the man may speak, as though Bel were able to understand.	41 quasi che li possan sentire quelli che non hanno movimento; ed egli, quando li averanno conosciuti, abbandoneranno quelli; però che quelli loro iddii non hanno niuno senso.
42 Yet they themselves cannot perceive this and abandon them, for they have no sense.	42 Le femine attorniate di funi seggono nelle vie, ardendo li nocciuoli dell' olive.
43 And the women, with cords about them, sit along the passageways, burning bran for incense; and when one of them is led off by one of the passers-by and is lain with, she derides the woman next to her, because she was not as attractive as herself and her cord was not broken.	43 E conciosia cosa che alcuna di quelle sia attratta per alcuno che passi per la via, e dorma con lui, quella allora (viene e) dispregia la sua vicina, e dispregiando dice ch' è più degna di lei, però che la sua fune non è rotta. (Queste parole s' intendono così: che le donne venivano e incatenavano li iddii, e stavano legate e attorniate con una fune, e questo faceano per commettere lussuria; e poi venìano li uomini lo giorno, e pigliavano quella che gli piaceva, e rompevano la fune e usavano con lei; e allora quella si teneva più degna, e dicea ch' era esaudita; sì che, per potere commettere lussuria, si adduceano a fare malie e le idolatrie, sì come fanno ancora oggi; per la qual cosa si prova ed è manifesto che la lussuria è richiedimento, e fassi idolatria).
44 Whatever is done for them is false. Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods?	44 Ma tutto quello che si fae a quelli iddii, sono cose false. Or dunque come si puote pensare e dire che siano iddii?
45 They are made by carpenters and goldsmiths; they can be nothing but what the craftsmen wish them to be.	45 I quali sono fatti dalli fabbri e dalli orefici. Di niuna altra cosa saranno, se non di quello che vogliono li sacerdoti.
46 The men that make them will certainly not live very long themselves; how then can the things that are made by them be gods?	46 E li orefici (e quelli) che li fanno, non sono di molto tempo. Or dunque possono quelli, che sono fatti da loro, essere iddii?
47 They have left only lies and reproach for those who come after.	47 Abbandonarono le cose false e vituperio a quelli che poi debbono venire.
48 For when war or calamity comes upon them, the priests consult together as to where they can hide themselves and their gods.	48 Però che quando sopraverrà loro battaglia e male, si pensano li sacerdoti, dov' egli si nascondano con essi.
49 How then can one fail to see that these are not gods, for they cannot save themselves from war or calamity?	49 Adunque come si debbono sentire che siano iddii, i quali non si possono liberare nè di battaglia nè di male?
50 Since they are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver, it will afterward be known that they are false.	50 Però che, conciosia cosa che siano di legno (e di pietra), d'oro o d'argento, saprassi poi che sono falsi da tutte le genti e dalli re; le quali cose sono manifeste, però che non sono iddii, ma sono opera di mano d' uomini, e non sono operazione di Dio (i loro iddii).
51 It will be manifest to all the nations and kings that they are not gods but the work of men's hands, and that there is no work of God in them.	51 ...
52 Who then can fail to know that they are not gods?	52 Non suscitano re a' reami, e non dànno pluvia alli uomini.
53 For they cannot set up a king over a country or give rain to men.	53 E non sanno discernere a neuno giudicio, e non liberano la contrada dalla ingiuria; però che non possono nulla, sì come le cornacchielle tra lo cielo e la terra; (cioè, quando volano, non toccano nè cielo nè terra).
54 They cannot judge their own cause or deliver one who is wronged, for they have no power; they are like crows between heaven and earth.	54 E quando avvenisse che lo fuoco appigliasse nelle case di questi iddii di legno e di oro e di ariento, li loro sacerdoti fuggiranno, e liberaranno sè medesimi (s' elli potranno); ed egli arderanno nel mezzo (della terra), sì come fussono travi.
55 When fire breaks out in a temple of wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests will flee and escape, but the gods will be burnt in two like beams.	55 Non faranno resistenza nò alli re nè a battaglia. Adunque come si puote dire o comprendere nell' animo, che siano iddii?
56 Besides, they can offer no resistance to a king or any enemies. Why then must any one admit or think that they are gods?	56 Non si poteran liberare da' rubatori nè dai ladroni, però ch' egli sono o di legno o di pietra, o d'oro o d'argento; quelli (iniqui e malvagi, cioè li) ladroni sono più forti.
57 Gods made of wood and overlaid with silver and gold are not able to save themselves from thieves and robbers.	57 E torranno loro da dosso l'oro e l'argento e lo vestimento con che saranno coperti, e anderànnosene; e non si puonno aiutare.
58 Strong men will strip them of their gold and silver and of the robes they wear, and go off with this booty, and they will not be able to help themselves.	58 E anche è meglio esser re, dimostrante la virtù sua, ovver uno vaso utile nella casa, nel quale si glorierà chi lo possiede, ovver porta nella casa, la qual custodisce le cose che vi sono, che gli falsi iddii.
59 So it is better to be a king who shows his courage, or a household utensil that serves its owner's need, than to be these false gods; better even the door of a house that protects its contents, than these false gods; better also a wooden pillar in a palace, than these false gods.	59 Lo sole e la luna e le stelle, quando sono splendide e mandate ad utilitade, (non) odono.
60 For sun and moon and stars, shining and sent forth for service, are obedient.	60 E simigliantemente la saetta e fulgore, quando apparisce, sì è molto chiara; e quello medesimo spirito spira in ogni regione.
61 So also the lightning, when it flashes, is widely seen; and the wind likewise blows in every land.	61 E li nuvoli, quando èlli comandato loro da Dio, che vadano per tutto il mondo, incontinente fanno quello che è loro comandato.
62 When God commands the clouds to go over the whole world, they carry out his command.	62 E anche lo fuoco, mandato di sopra, sì consuma li monti e le selve, e fa quello che gli è comandato. Ma queste cose non [sono] simili d' uno di loro nè per bellezza nè per virtù.
63 And the fire sent from above to consume mountains and woods does what it is ordered. But these idols are not to be compared with them in appearance or power.	63 Per la qual cosa non si deve dire nè pensare, che siano iddii; poi che non possono giudicare, nè giudicio dare, nè farlo agli uomini.
64 Therefore one must not think that they are gods nor call them gods, for they are not able either to decide a case or to do good to men.	64 Sappiendo voi adunque che non sono iddii, però non li temete.
65 Since you know then that they are not gods, do not fear them.	65 Egli non benediceranno li re, e non li malediceranno.
66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings;	66 Però che non mostrano segni in cielo alle genti; e non luceranno come lo sole, e non daranno lume come la luna.
67 they cannot show signs in the heavens and among the nations, or shine like the sun or give light like the moon.	67 Le bestie sono migliori di loro, però che almeno possono fuggire sotto li tetti, acciò che faccia loro prode.
68 The wild beasts are better than they are, for they can flee to cover and help themselves.	68 Per niuna cosa dunque v'è manifesto che siano iddii; per la qual cosa non li temete.
69 So we have no evidence whatever that they are gods; therefore do not fear them.	69 Però che come la paura (cioè lo spaventacchio) non è cagione che nel cucumerario si custodisca alcuna cosa, così sono i loro iddii di legno e d'oro e d'ariento.
70 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber bed, that guards nothing, so are their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver.	70 In quello modo [è] la spina bianca nell' orto, sopra la quale ogni uccello si posa. Simigliantemente sono simili allo morto, lo quale è gittato alle tenebre, (così sono) i loro iddii che sono [di legno e] d'oro e d'argento.
71 In the same way, their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver, and like a thorn bush in a garden, on which every bird sits; or like a dead body cast out in the darkness.	71 Dalla porpora e dal marmoro, che tengono sopra, saprete che non sono iddii. Egli alla fine saranno mangiati, e saranno vituperio alla contrada, (cioè che si venderanno, e li denari si spenderanno in mangiari).
72 By the purple and linen that rot upon them you will know that they are not gods; and they will finally themselves be consumed, and be a reproach in the land.	72 E (ancora) migliore è uno uomo giusto, il quale non hae queste idolatrie; però che egli sarà di lungi (dalla vergogna, e ancora) dalli vituperii.
73 Better therefore is a just man who has no idols, for he will be far from reproach.
