1 A copy of a letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were to be taken to Babylon as captives by the king of the Babylonians, to give them the message which God had commanded him.	1 Por causa dos pecados que cometestes diante de Deus, sereis levados cativos a Babilônia, por Nabucodonosor, rei dos Babilônios.
2 Because of the sins which you have committed before God, you will be taken to Babylon as captives by Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians.	2 Uma vez chegados a Babilônia, estareis ali muitos anos, largo tempo, até sete gerações; depois disto, vos tirarei de lá em paz.
3 Therefore when you have come to Babylon you will remain there for many years, for a long time, up to seven generations; after that I will bring you away from there in peace.	3 Ora, ides ver em Babilônia que são levados aos ombros deuses de prata, de ouro e de madeira, que metem medo às gentes.
4 Now in Babylon you will see gods made of silver and gold and wood, which are carried on men's shoulders and inspire fear in the heathen.	4 Vêde, pois, não suceda que vos torneis semelhantes no procedimento aos estrangeiros, a ponto de vos deixardes possuir do temor desses deuses.
5 So take care not to become at all like the foreigners or to let fear for these gods possess you, when you see the multitude before and behind them worshiping them.	5 Quando virdes, detrás e diante deles, a multidão que os adora, dizei em vossos corações; Tu, Senhor, é que deves ser adorado.
6 But say in your heart, "It is thou, O Lord, whom we must worship."	6 Porque o meu anjo está convosco, e ele tomará cuidado das vossas vidas.
7 For my angel is with you, and he is watching your lives.	7 Porque a língua desses ídolos foi polida por um artista, e eles, (apesar de) dourados e prateados, são um puro engano e não podem falar.
8 Their tongues are smoothed by the craftsman, and they themselves are overlaid with gold and silver; but they are false and cannot speak.	8 Como se fazem adornos para uma donzela que gosta deles, assim se toma ouro e se fabricam coroas para colocar na cabeça de tais deuses.
9 People take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods, as they would for a girl who loves ornaments;	9 Às vezes os sacerdotes despojam os seus deuses do ouro e da prata, gastando isso em seus próprios usos
10 and sometimes the priests secretly take gold and silver from their gods and spend it upon themselves,	10 ou dando-o até às prostitutas, nas suas casas. Enfeitam os seus deuses, como se fossem homens, esses deuses de prata, de ouro e de madeira,
11 and even give some of it to the harlots in the brothel. They deck their gods out with garments like men--these gods of silver and gold and wood,	11 Estes não se defendem da ferrugem nem da traça.
12 which cannot save themselves from rust and corrosion. When they have been dressed in purple robes,	12 Depois de os terem revestido de púrpura, limpam-lhe o rosto por causa do muitíssimo pó que se levanta no templo.
13 their faces are wiped because of the dust from the temple, which is thick upon them.	13 (Eis um que) tem um ceptro na mão, corno governador de província, mas não mata a quem ofende.
14 Like a local ruler the god holds a scepter, though unable to destroy any one who offends it.	14 (Eis outro que) tem na mão uma espada e um cutelo, mas não se pode livrar a si mesmo da guerra nem dos ladrões. Por aqui claramente se vê que não são deuses;
15 It has a dagger in its right hand, and has an axe; but it cannot save itself from war and robbers.	15 portanto não os temais. Como uma vasilha, se se quebra, fica inútil para o homem, assim são também os seus deuses.
16 Therefore they evidently are not gods; so do not fear them.	16 Colocados numa casa, os seus olhos enchem-se de pó levantado pelos pés dos que entram.
17 For just as one's dish is useless when it is broken, so are the gods of the heathen, when they have been set up in the temples. Their eyes are full of the dust raised by the feet of those who enter.	17 Assim como se fecham as portas da prisão àquele que ofendeu o rei e que vai ser morto, do mesmo modo seguram os sacerdotes as portas dos templos com fechaduras e ferrolhos, para que (os seus deuses) não sejam despojados pelos ladrões.
18 And just as the gates are shut on every side upon a man who has offended a king, as though he were sentenced to death, so the priests make their temples secure with doors and locks and bars, in order that they may not be plundered by robbers.	18 Acendem-lhes lâmpadas, e em maior número que para si próprios, mas os deuses não podem ver nenhuma.
19 They light lamps, even more than they light for themselves, though their gods can see none of them.	19 São como as traves do templo, cujo interior é corroído, segundo se diz, pelos vermes que saem da terra; porém, quando os roem a eles e às suas vestes não o sentem.
20 They are just like a beam of the temple, but men say their hearts have melted, when worms from the earth devour them and their robes. They do not notice	20 Negro se torna o seu rosto com o fumo que se eleva na sua casa.
21 when their faces have been blackened by the smoke of the temple.	21 Sobre o seu corpo e sobre a sua cabeça esvoaçam os mochos, as andorinhas e outras aves, e também saltam os gatos.
22 Bats, swallows, and birds light on their bodies and heads; and so do cats.	22 Por isto bem vedes que não são deuses; portanto não os temais.
23 From this you will know that they are not gods; so do not fear them.	23 O ouro que os cobre, serve para os embelezar, mas se alguém lhes não limpar o empanamento, reluzirão. Mesmo quando os fundiam, nada sentiram.
24 As for the gold which they wear for beauty--they will not shine unless some one wipes off the rust; for even when they were being cast, they had no feeling.	24 Por alto preço são comprados, e não há neles espírito de vida.
25 They are bought at any cost, but there is no breath in them.	25 Não tendo pés (capazes de andar), são levados sobre os ombros, mostrando aos homens a sua vileza. Devem também envergonhar-se os que os adoram.
26 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, revealing to mankind their worthlessness.	26 Se caírem em terra, não se levantam por si mesmos; se alguém os põe de pé, não se podem mover; se inclinados, não se podem endireitar. São lhes apresentadas, como a mortos, as oferendas.
27 And those who serve them are ashamed because through them these gods are made to stand, lest they fall to the ground. If any one sets one of them upright, it cannot move itself; and if it is tipped over, it cannot straighten itself; but gifts are placed before them just as before the dead.	27 Os seus sacerdotes vendem tais oferendas, para seu proveito; as suas mulheres tomam também uma parte que salgam (para conservar), não dando coisa alguma, nem aos pobres nem aos enfermos.
28 The priests sell the sacrifices that are offered to these gods and use the money; and likewise their wives preserve some with salt, but give none to the poor or helpless.	28 As mulheres grávidas e no seu estado de impureza tocam os sacrifícios deles. Sabendo vós, pois. por estas coisas, que não são deuses, não os temais.
29 Sacrifices to them may be touched by women in menstruation or at childbirth. Since you know by these things that they are not gods, do not fear them.	29 Por que chamar-lhes, pois, deuses? As mulheres fazem oferendas a estes deuses de prata, de ouro e de madeira.
30 For why should they be called gods? Women serve meals for gods of silver and gold and wood;	30 Nos seus templos estão assentados os sacerdotes, de túnicas rasgadas, de cabeça e barba rapadas, de cabeça descoberta.
31 and in their temples the priests sit with their clothes rent, their heads and beards shaved, and their heads uncovered.	31 Rugem, fazendo alarido diante dos seus deuses, como num festim fúnebre.
32 They howl and shout before their gods as some do at a funeral feast for a man who has died.	32 Os sacerdotes tiram-lhes as suas roupagens e com elas vestem as suas mulheres e os seus filhos.
33 The priests take some of the clothing of their gods to clothe their wives and children.	33 Ainda que (aos ídolos) se lhes faça algum mal ou algum bem, não podem dar o pago. Não podem pôr um rei, nem tirá-lo.
34 Whether one does evil to them or good, they will not be able to repay it. They cannot set up a king or depose one.	34 Nem tão pouco podem dar riquezas, nem a mais pequena moeda. Se alguém lhes fizer um voto e não o cumprir, nem disto se queixam.
35 Likewise they are not able to give either wealth or money; if one makes a vow to them and does not keep it, they will not require it.	35 Não livram ninguém da morte, nem defendem o fraco do mais poderoso.
36 They cannot save a man from death or rescue the weak from the strong.	36 Não restituem a vista a um cego, nem livram o homem da sua necessidade.
37 They cannot restore sight to a blind man; they cannot rescue a man who is in distress.	37 Não podem compadecer-se da viúva ou fazer bem ao órfão.
38 They cannot take pity on a widow or do good to an orphan.	38 São semelhantes às pedras do monte, estes deuses feitos de madeira, cobertos de ouro e prata; os que os adoram serão confundidos.
39 These things that are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver are like stones from the mountain, and those who serve them will be put to shame.	39 Como se pode, pois, pensar ou dizer que são deuses?
40 Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chaldeans themselves dishonor them;	40 Os próprios Caldeus os desonram: quando sabem que alguém não pode falar, porque é mudo, apresentam-no a Bel, pedindo-lhe que lhe dê fala, como se o deus pudesse ouvir.
41 for when they see a dumb man, who cannot speak, they bring him and pray Bel that the man may speak, as though Bel were able to understand.	41 São incapazes de reflectir sobre tudo isto e de abandonar esses deuses, tamanha é a sua insensatez! Mesmo, quando se desenganam, os abandonam, porque os seus deuses são insensíveis.
42 Yet they themselves cannot perceive this and abandon them, for they have no sense.	42 Mulheres, cingidas de cordas, estão assentadas nos caminhos, queimando farelo.
43 And the women, with cords about them, sit along the passageways, burning bran for incense; and when one of them is led off by one of the passers-by and is lain with, she derides the woman next to her, because she was not as attractive as herself and her cord was not broken.	43 E, quando alguma delas, atraída por qualquer transeunte, dormiu com ele. lança em rosto à sua vizinha que ela não foi julgada digna da mesma honra e de a sua corda se quebrar.
44 Whatever is done for them is false. Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods?	44 Todas as coisas que se fazem com estes deuses são mentira. Como se pode, pois, crer ou dizer que são deuses?
45 They are made by carpenters and goldsmiths; they can be nothing but what the craftsmen wish them to be.	45 Por artistas e ourives foram feitos. Nenhuma outra coisa serão, senão aquilo que querem que sejam os artífices.
46 The men that make them will certainly not live very long themselves; how then can the things that are made by them be gods?	46 Os mesmos artífices que os fazem, não são de muita duração; como podem, pois. ser deuses os que por eles foram fabricados?
47 They have left only lies and reproach for those who come after.	47 Não deixaram senão engano e opróbrio aos seus descendentes.
48 For when war or calamity comes upon them, the priests consult together as to where they can hide themselves and their gods.	48 Quando sobrevém alguma guerra ou desastre, os sacerdotes consultam entre si sobre onde se hão-de esconder com os seus deuses.
49 How then can one fail to see that these are not gods, for they cannot save themselves from war or calamity?	49 Como, pois, não se vê que não são deuses os que nem se podem livrar da guerra, nem defender-se das calamidades?
50 Since they are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver, it will afterward be known that they are false.	50 Porque são de madeira, dourados e prateados, vir-se-á a saber, um dia, que são falsos; claro se tornará, para todos os povos e reis, que não são deuses, mas obra da mão dos homens, e que não há neles operação alguma divina.
51 It will be manifest to all the nations and kings that they are not gods but the work of men's hands, and that there is no work of God in them.	51 Quem, pois não verá claramente que não são deuses?
52 Who then can fail to know that they are not gods?	52 Não estabelecerão rei em país algum, nem darão chuva aos homens.
53 For they cannot set up a king over a country or give rain to men.	53 Não decidirão as próprias contendas. nem livrarão da opressão, porque nada podem, como as gralhas que voam entre o céu e a terra.
54 They cannot judge their own cause or deliver one who is wronged, for they have no power; they are like crows between heaven and earth.	54 Se o fogo se atear na casa desses deuses de madeira, cobertos de prata e de ouro, os seus sacerdotes fugirão e se livrarão, mas eles, como traves, no meio das chamas serão queimados.
55 When fire breaks out in a temple of wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests will flee and escape, but the gods will be burnt in two like beams.	55 Não resistirão a um rei nem a inimigos. Como se pode, pois, admitir ou pensar que são deuses?
56 Besides, they can offer no resistance to a king or any enemies. Why then must any one admit or think that they are gods?	56 Não se poderão defender dos ladrões, nem dos salteadores, estes deuses de madeira, dourados e prateados, porque aqueles, sendo mais fortes,
57 Gods made of wood and overlaid with silver and gold are not able to save themselves from thieves and robbers.	57 os despojarão do ouro, da prata e das vestes de que estão cobertos, e se irão com isso embora, sem que tais deuses se possam valer a si mesmos.
58 Strong men will strip them of their gold and silver and of the robes they wear, and go off with this booty, and they will not be able to help themselves.	58 Vale, pois, mais ser um rei, que ostenta as suas forças, ou uma vasilha útil na casa, da qual se serve o que a possui, ou uma porta em qualquer casa que guarda o que há dentro dela, ou ainda uma coluna de madeira num palácio, do que ser um destes falsos deuses.
59 So it is better to be a king who shows his courage, or a household utensil that serves its owner's need, than to be these false gods; better even the door of a house that protects its contents, than these false gods; better also a wooden pillar in a palace, than these false gods.	59 O sol, a lua e as estrelas, sendo resplandecentes e destinados à utilidade dos homens, cumprem o que lhes foi mandado.
60 For sun and moon and stars, shining and sent forth for service, are obedient.	60 Da mesma sorte o relâmpago que, quando fuzila, é belo à vista, e o vento que sopra por toda a região,
61 So also the lightning, when it flashes, is widely seen; and the wind likewise blows in every land.	61 e as nuvens que recebem de Deus ordem de correr todo o mundo, cumprem o que lhes é mandado.
62 When God commands the clouds to go over the whole world, they carry out his command.	62 O fogo, também enviado de cima para que consuma os montes e os bosques, faz o que lhe foi ordenado. Mas estes (deuses) não se assemelham a nenhuma coisa destas, nem em beleza nem em poder.
63 And the fire sent from above to consume mountains and woods does what it is ordered. But these idols are not to be compared with them in appearance or power.	63 Por onde não se deve pensar nem dizer que são deuses visto que não podem fazer justiça nem conceder benefícios aos homens.
64 Therefore one must not think that they are gods nor call them gods, for they are not able either to decide a case or to do good to men.	64 Por isso, sabendo que não são deuses, não os temais,
65 Since you know then that they are not gods, do not fear them.	65 Não podem amaldiçoar nem abençoar os reis.
66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings;	66 Não podem mostrar no céu sinais aos povos, não brilham como o sol nem alumiam como a lua.
67 they cannot show signs in the heavens and among the nations, or shine like the sun or give light like the moon.	67 Mais do que eles valem os animais, que podem refugiar-se debaixo dum coberto e ser úteis a si próprios.
68 The wild beasts are better than they are, for they can flee to cover and help themselves.	68 Não nos é, pois manifesto, de maneira alguma, que são deuses; portanto não os temais,
69 So we have no evidence whatever that they are gods; therefore do not fear them.	69 Porque, assim como um espantalho em um meloal o não guarda, assim são os seus deuses de madeira, cobertos de prata e de ouro.
70 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber bed, that guards nothing, so are their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver.	70 São como um espinheiro em um jardim, sobre o qual vêm pousar todas as aves, assemelham-se a um morto lançado em lugar tenebroso, os seus deuses de madeira, cobertos de ouro e de prata.
71 In the same way, their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver, and like a thorn bush in a garden, on which every bird sits; or like a dead body cast out in the darkness.	71 Pela púrpura e escarlate que sobre eles se desfazem, sabereis claramente que não são deuses. Eles mesmos por fim serão devorados e tornar-se-ão o opróbrio do país.
72 By the purple and linen that rot upon them you will know that they are not gods; and they will finally themselves be consumed, and be a reproach in the land.	72 O homem justo que não tem ídolos vale mais do que eles, porque estará longe de opróbrios.
73 Better therefore is a just man who has no idols, for he will be far from reproach.
