Sirach 17

1 The Lord created man out of earth, and turned him back to it again.	1 Il Signore dalla terra creò l’uomo e di nuovo lo fa ritornare a essa.
2 He gave to men few days, a limited time, but granted them authority over the things upon the earth.	2 Assegnò loro giorni contati e il tempo e diede loro potere su quanto è sopra di essa.
3 He endowed them with strength like his own, and made them in his own image.	3 Li rivestì di un vigore simile al suo e li fece a sua immagine.
4 He placed the fear of them in all living beings, and granted them dominion over beasts and birds.	4 Pose timore di essi su ogni vivente, perché dominassero bestie e uccelli.
5 .	5 Diede lingua, occhio e orecchi, facoltà di deliberare e cuore per comprendere.
6 He made for them tongue and eyes; he gave them ears and a mind for thinking.	6 Li riempì di scienza e di intelletto e mostrò loro il bene e il male.
7 He filled them with knowledge and understanding, and showed them good and evil.	7 Pose gli occhi sopra il loro cuore per dimostrare loro la grandezza delle sue opere;
8 He set his eye upon their hearts to show them the majesty of his works.	8 perché ne venisse dispiegata loro la magnificenza ed essi lodassero il suo santo nome.
9 .	9 Aggiunse loro la scienza e li rese eredi della legge della vita.
10 And they will praise his holy name, to proclaim the grandeur of his works.	10 Costituì con loro un’alleanza eterna e propose loro i suoi decreti,
11 He bestowed knowledge upon them, and allotted to them the law of life.	11 I loro occhi videro la grandezza della sua gloria e i loro orecchi ne ascoltarono la voce potente;
12 He established with them an eternal covenant, and showed them his judgments.	12 egli disse loro: «Guardatevi da ogni ingiustizia», e dettò a ognuno i doveri verso il prossimo.
13 Their eyes saw his glorious majesty, and their ears heard the glory of his voice.	13 Le loro vie sono sempre dinanzi a lui, non possono venire celate ai suoi occhi.
14 And he said to them, "Beware of all unrighteousness." And he gave commandment to each of them concerning his neighbor.	14 Per ciascuna nazione egli ha costituito una guida; ma Israele è porzione del Signore,
15 Their ways are always before him, they will not be hid from his eyes.	15 Tutte le loro azioni gli sono davanti come il sole; i suoi occhi sono di continuo sulle loro vie.
16 .	16 Le loro iniquità non sono a lui nascoste; tutti i loro peccati sono al cospetto del Signore.
17 He appointed a ruler for every nation, but Israel is the Lord's own portion.	17 La beneficenza dell’uomo è considerata da lui come un sigillo; conserva come la pupilla il beneficio fatto.
18 .	18 Si leverà poi e li ricompenserà: farà ricadere la loro ricompensa sulla loro testa.
19 All their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.	19 Ma offre il ritorno a chi si pente e conforta la pazienza di chi vien meno.
20 Their iniquities are not hidden from him, and all their sins are before the Lord.	20 Volgiti al Signore e abbandona il peccato; prostrati supplice, diminuisci gli ostacoli;
21 .	21 torna all’Altissimo e togliti dall’ingiustizia; odia fortemente ciò che va abominato.
22 A man's almsgiving is like a signet with the Lord, and he will keep a person's kindness like the apple of his eye.	22 Chi loda l’Altissimo nell’Ade, al posto di chi vive e gli rende la confessione?
23 Afterward he will arise and requite them, and he will bring their recompense on their heads.	23 Dal morto, quasi non esista, viene meno la lode, chi è vivo e sano loda il Signore.
24 Yet to those who repent he grants a return, and he encourages those whose endurance is failing.	24 Quanto è grande la misericordia del Signore e il perdono per chi ritorna a lui!
25 Turn to the Lord and forsake your sins; pray in his presence and lessen your offenses.	25 Perché gli uomini non possono, tutto e il figlio dell’uomo non è immortale.
26 Return to the Most High and turn away from iniquity, and hate abominations intensely.	26 Che cosa è più splendido del sole? Eppure si eclissa. Anche la carne e il sangue trama il male.
27 Who will sing praises to the Most High in Hades, as do those who are alive and give thanks?	27 Ma il sole veglia sulle potenze del cielo dei cieli; tutti gli uomini sono terra e cenere!
28 From the dead, as from one who does not exist, thanksgiving has ceased; he who is alive and well sings the Lord's praises.
29 How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness for those who turn to him!
30 For all things cannot be in men, since a son of man is not immortal.
31 What is brighter than the sun? Yet its light fails. So flesh and blood devise evil.
32 He marshals the host of the height of heaven; but all men are dust and ashes.
