Sirach 17

1 The Lord created man out of earth, and turned him back to it again.	1 Dio formò l'uomo dalla terra, lo creò a sua imagine,
2 He gave to men few days, a limited time, but granted them authority over the things upon the earth.	2 e di nuovo lo fa ritornare alla terra. E secondo la sua natura lo rivestì di forza.
3 He endowed them with strength like his own, and made them in his own image.	3 Assegnò a lui un numero di giorni, un dato tempo, e gli diede l'impero delle cose che sono sopra la terra.
4 He placed the fear of them in all living beings, and granted them dominion over beasts and birds.	4 Lo rese terribile a tutti gli animali, in modo che do minasse bestie e volatili.
5 .	5 Creò, traendolo dalla sua sostanza, un aiuto simile a lui, e diede loro consiglio, lingua, occhi, orecchi, diede loro un cuore per pensare, li riempì del sapere dell'intelletto.
6 He made for them tongue and eyes; he gave them ears and a mind for thinking.	6 Creò in essi la scienza dello spirito, riempì il loro cuore di senno, e fece loro conoscere il bene e il male.
7 He filled them with knowledge and understanding, and showed them good and evil.	7 Pose il suo occhio sopra i loro cuori, per mostrar loro le grandezze delle sue opere,
8 He set his eye upon their hearts to show them the majesty of his works.	8 affinchè essi dian lode al suo nome santo, e lo glorifichino nelle sue maraviglie, e raccontino le grandezze delle sue opere.
9 .	9 Di più diede loro la scienza, e, come retaggio, la legge della vita.
10 And they will praise his holy name, to proclaim the grandeur of his works.	10 Stabilì con essi un patto eterno, e fece loro conoscere la sua giustizia e i suoi comandamenti.
11 He bestowed knowledge upon them, and allotted to them the law of life.	11 I loro occhi videro le grandezze della sua gloria e la maestà della sua voce ferì le loro orecchie. Egli disse loro: « Guardatevi da ogni iniquità ».
12 He established with them an eternal covenant, and showed them his judgments.	12 E comandò a ciascuno di aver cura del suo prossimo.
13 Their eyes saw his glorious majesty, and their ears heard the glory of his voice.	13 Gli andamenti degli uomini gli stanno sempre davanti: essi non possono essere nascosti agli occhi di lui.
14 And he said to them, "Beware of all unrighteousness." And he gave commandment to each of them concerning his neighbor.	14 Ad ogni nazione assegnò un capo;
15 Their ways are always before him, they will not be hid from his eyes.	15 ma Israele è chiaramente la porzione del Signore.
16 .	16 Tutte le loro azioni sono come il sole al cospetto di Dio, e gli occhi di lui sono fìssi continuamente sopra i loro andamenti.
17 He appointed a ruler for every nation, but Israel is the Lord's own portion.	17 La sua alleanza non è stata nascosta per le loro iniquità, e tutte le loro iniquità sono alla presenza del Signore.
18 .	18 L'elemosina dell'uomo è per lui come un sigillo; egli terrà conto dell'opera buona dell'uomo come della pupilla del suo occhio.
19 All their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.	19 E finalmente si leverà (in giudizio), e darà il meritato a ciascuno in particolare e li farà ritornare nel profondo della terra.
20 Their iniquities are not hidden from him, and all their sins are before the Lord.	20 Ma ai penitenti dona la via della giustizia; non lascia di sostenere i deboli, ed ha destinato ad essi il retaggio della verità.
21 .	21 Torna al Signore, e lascia i tuoi peccati.
22 A man's almsgiving is like a signet with the Lord, and he will keep a person's kindness like the apple of his eye.	22 Prega dinanzi al Signore e diminuisci le occasioni di cadere.
23 Afterward he will arise and requite them, and he will bring their recompense on their heads.	23 Ritorna al Signore, e volgi le spalle all'ingiustizia, ed abbi sommamente in odio ogni atto esecrando.
24 Yet to those who repent he grants a return, and he encourages those whose endurance is failing.	24 Conosci i comandamenti e i giudizi di Dio, e sta costante nella sorte che t'è proposta e nel pregare l'Altissimo Dio.
25 Turn to the Lord and forsake your sins; pray in his presence and lessen your offenses.	25 Entra a parte del secolo santo con quelli che vivono e dànno gloria a Dio.
26 Return to the Most High and turn away from iniquity, and hate abominations intensely.	26 Non ti fermare nell'errore degli empi. Dà lode a Dio avanti di morire: se vien dal morto, come dal niente, la lode è perduta.
27 Who will sing praises to the Most High in Hades, as do those who are alive and give thanks?	27 Da vivo lo glorificherai, da vivo e da sano lo glorificherai, e darai lode a Dio e ti glorierai delle sue misericordie.
28 From the dead, as from one who does not exist, thanksgiving has ceased; he who is alive and well sings the Lord's praises.	28 Quanto è mai grande la misericordia del Signore, e la sua benegnità verso quelli che tornano a lui!
29 How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness for those who turn to him!	29 Perchè non tutte le cose possono essere negli uomini, e non è immortale il figlio dell'uomo, e si diletta nella vanità e nella malizia.
30 For all things cannot be in men, since a son of man is not immortal.	30 Che v'ha di più luminoso del sole? Eppure s'ecelissa. E che v'ha di peggio dei pensieri della carne e del sangue? Saran puniti.
31 What is brighter than the sun? Yet its light fails. So flesh and blood devise evil.	31 Egli contempla l'armata degli alti cieli, e gli uomini tutti son terra e cenere.
32 He marshals the host of the height of heaven; but all men are dust and ashes.
