Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
A Psalm of Asaph. O God, the heathen have come into thy inheritance; they have defiled thy holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.1 A psalm of Asaph. O God, the nations have invaded your heritage; they have defiled your holy temple, have laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given the bodies of thy servants to the birds of the air for food, the flesh of thy saints to the beasts of the earth.2 They have left the corpses of your servants as food for the birds of the heavens, the flesh of your faithful for the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.3 They have spilled their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and no one is left to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those round about us.4 We have become the reproach of our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
How long, O LORD? Wilt thou be angry for ever? Will thy jealous wrath burn like fire?5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your rage keep burning like fire?
Pour out thy anger on the nations that do not know thee, and on the kingdoms that do not call on thy name!6 Pour out your wrath on nations that reject you, on kingdoms that do not call on your name,
For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his habitation.7 For they have devoured Jacob, laid waste his home.
Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let thy compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low.8 Do not hold past iniquities against us; may your compassion come quickly, for we have been brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake!9 Help us, God our savior, for the glory of your name. Deliver us, pardon our sins for your name's sake.
Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of thy servants be known among the nations before our eyes!10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes make clear to the nations that you avenge the blood of your servants.
Let the groans of the prisoners come before thee; according to thy great power preserve those doomed to die!11 Let the groans of prisoners come before you; by your great power free those doomed to death.
Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted thee, O Lord!12 Lord, inflict on our neighbors seven fold the disgrace they inflicted on you.
Then we thy people, the flock of thy pasture, will give thanks to thee for ever; from generation to generation we will recount thy praise.13 Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; through all ages we will declare your praise.
