2 Maccabees 15

Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition La Biblia
1 When Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the region of Samaria, he made plans to attack them with complete safety on the day of rest.1 Nicanor supo que los hombres de Judas se hallaban en la región de Samaría y decidió atacarlos sin riesgo en el día del descanso.
2 And when the Jews who were compelled to follow him said, "Do not destroy so savagely and barbarously, but show respect for the day which he who sees all things has honored and hallowed above other days,"2 Los judíos que contra su voluntad lo acompañaban le decían: «No los mates así de modo tan salvaje y bárbaro; respeta y honra más bien el día que con preferencia ha sido santificado por Aquel que todo lo ve».
3 the thrice-accursed wretch asked if there were a sovereign in heaven who had commanded the keeping of the sabbath day.3 Aquel hombre tres veces criminal preguntó si en el cielo había un Soberano que hubiera prescrito celebrar el día del sábado.
4 And when they declared, "It is the living Lord himself, the Sovereign in heaven, who ordered us to observe the seventh day,"4 Ellos le replicaron: «Es el mismo Señor que vive como Soberano en el cielo el que mandó observar el día séptimo».
5 he replied, "And I am a sovereign also, on earth, and I command you to take up arms and finish the king's business." Nevertheless, he did not succeed in carrying out his abominable design.5 Entonces Nicanor replicó: «También yo soy soberano en la tierra: el que ordena tomar las armas y prestar servicio al rey». Pero no pudo llevar a cabo su bárbaro proyecto.
6 This Nicanor in his utter boastfulness and arrogance had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men.6 Nicanor, jactándose con altivez, se proponía erigir un monumento público a su victoria con los despojos de los hombres de Judas.
7 But Maccabeus did not cease to trust with all confidence that he would get help from the Lord.7 Macabeo, por su parte, mantenía perseverante su confianza, con la firme esperanza de recibir ayuda de parte del Señor,
8 And he exhorted his men not to fear the attack of the Gentiles, but to keep in mind the former times when help had come to them from heaven, and now to look for the victory which the Almighty would give them.8 y exhortaba a los que le acompañaban a no temer el ataque de los gentiles, teniendo presentes en la mente los auxilios que antes les habían venido del cielo, y a esperar también ahora la victoria que les habría de venir de parte del Todopoderoso.
9 Encouraging them from the law and the prophets, and reminding them also of the struggles they had won, he made them the more eager.9 Los animaba citando la Ley y los Profetas, y les recordaba los combates que habían llevado a cabo. De este modo les infundía mayor ardor.
10 And when he had aroused their courage, he gave his orders, at the same time pointing out the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths.10 Encendidos así los ánimos, les hizo ver además la perfidia de los gentiles que violaban sus juramentos.
11 He armed each of them not so much with confidence in shields and spears as with the inspiration of brave words, and he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief.11 Armó a cada uno de ellos, no tanto con la seguridad que dan los escudos y las lanzas, como con el ánimo de sus alentadoras palabras. Les refirió además un sueño digno de crédito, una especie de visión, que alegró a todos.
12 What he saw was this: Onias, who had been high priest, a noble and good man, of modest bearing and gentle manner, one who spoke fittingly and had been trained from childhood in all that belongs to excellence, was praying with outstretched hands for the whole body of the Jews.12 Su sueño era este: Onías, el antiguo sumo sacerdote, hombre bueno y bondadoso, afable, de suaves maneras, distinguido en su conversación, ejercitado desde la niñez por la práctica de la virtud, suplicaba con las manos extendidas por toda la nación judía.
13 Then likewise a man appeared, distinguished by his gray hair and dignity, and of marvelous majesty and authority.13 Luego, en igual actitud, se apareció a Judas un hombre que se distinguía por sus blancos cabellos y su dignidad, rodeado de admirable y majestuosa soberanía.
14 And Onias spoke, saying, "This is a man who loves the brethren and prays much for the people and the holy city, Jeremiah, the prophet of God."14 Onías tomó la palabra para decir: «Este es el que ama a sus hermanos, el que ora mucho por el pueblo y por la ciudad santa: Jeremías, el profeta de Dios».
15 Jeremiah stretched out his right hand and gave to Judas a golden sword, and as he gave it he addressed him thus:15 Entonces Jeremías extendió su mano derecha y entregó a Judas una espada de oro; al dársela, pronunciaba estas palabras:
16 "Take this holy sword, a gift from God, with which you will strike down your adversaries."16 «Recibe de parte de Dios esta espada sagrada como regalo; con ella exterminarás a tus enemigos».
17 Encouraged by the words of Judas, so noble and so effective in arousing valor and awaking manliness in the souls of the young, they determined not to carry on a campaign but to attack bravely, and to decide the matter, by fighting hand to hand with all courage, because the city and the sanctuary and the temple were in danger.17 Animados por estas bellas palabras de Judas, capaces de estimular el valor y de robustecer los espíritus jóvenes, decidieron no entretenerse en montar el campamento, sino lanzarse valerosamente a la ofensiva y, en un cuerpo a cuerpo, aventurar la resolución de aquella situación, porque peligraban la ciudad, la religión y el templo.
18 Their concern for wives and children, and also for brethren and relatives, lay upon them less heavily; their greatest and first fear was for the consecrated sanctuary.18 En verdad que la preocupación por sus mujeres e hijos, por sus hermanos y parientes, quedaba en segundo lugar; el primero y principal era el santuario consagrado.
19 And those who had to remain in the city were in no little distress, being anxious over the encounter in the open country.19 Igualmente para los que habían quedado en la ciudad no era menor la ansiedad, preocupados como estaban por el ataque en campo abierto.
20 When all were now looking forward to the coming decision, and the enemy was already close at hand with their army drawn up for battle, the elephants strategically stationed and the cavalry deployed on the flanks,20 Todos aguardaban el desenlace inminente. Los enemigos se habían concentrado y el ejército se había alineado en orden de batalla. Los elefantes se habían situado en puntos estratégicos, y la caballería estaba dispuesta en los flancos.
21 Maccabeus, perceiving the hosts that were before him and the varied supply of arms and the savagery of the elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the Lord who works wonders; for he knew that it is not by arms, but as the Lord decides, that he gains the victory for those who deserve it.21 Entonces, Macabeo, al observar el despliegue de las tropas, la variedad de las armas preparadas y el fiero aspecto de los elefantes, levantó las manos al cielo e invocó al Señor que hace prodigios, pues bien sabía que, no por las armas, sino según su decisión, concede él la victoria a los que la merecen.
22 And he called upon him in these words: "O Lord, thou didst send thy angel in the time of Hezekiah king of Judea, and he slew fully a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Sennacherib.22 Hizo la siguiente invocación: «Tú, Soberano, enviaste tu ángel a Ezequías, rey de Judá, que dio muerte a cerca de ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres del ejército de Senaquerib;
23 So now, O Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel to carry terror and trembling before us.23 ahora también, Señor de los cielos, envía un ángel bueno delante de nosotros para infundirles temor y espanto.
24 By the might of thy arm may these blasphemers who come against thy holy people be struck down." With these words he ended his prayer.24 ¡Que el poder de tu brazo hiera a los que, blasfemando, han venido a atacar a tu pueblo santo!». Así terminó su oración.
25 Nicanor and his men advanced with trumpets and battle songs;25 Mientras la gente de Nicanor avanzaba al son de trompetas y cantos de guerra,
26 and Judas and his men met the enemy in battle with invocation to God and prayers.26 los hombres de Judas entablaron combate con el enemigo entre invocaciones y plegarias.
27 So, fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they laid low no less than thirty-five thousand men, and were greatly gladdened by God's manifestation.27 Combatían con sus manos, pero oraban a Dios en su corazón; así abatieron no menos de treinta y cinco mil hombres, rebosando de alegría por la intervención manifiesta de Dios.
28 When the action was over and they were returning with joy, they recognized Nicanor, lying dead, in full armor.28 Al volver de su empresa, en gozoso retorno, reconocieron a Nicanor caído, con la armadura puesta.
29 Then there was shouting and tumult, and they blessed the Sovereign Lord in the language of their fathers.29 En medio del griterío y alboroto, bendecían al Señor en su lengua patria.
30 And the man who was ever in body and soul the defender of his fellow citizens, the man who maintained his youthful good will toward his countrymen, ordered them to cut off Nicanor's head and arm and carry them to Jerusalem.30 Entonces Judas, el que se había entregado en cuerpo y alma y en primera fila al bien de sus conciudadanos, y había guardado hacia sus compatriotas los buenos sentimientos de su juventud, mandó cortar a Nicanor la cabeza y el brazo hasta el hombro, y llevarlos a Jerusalén.
31 And when he arrived there and had called his countrymen together and stationed the priests before the altar, he sent for those who were in the citadel.31 Llegado allí convocó a sus compatriotas, colocó a los sacerdotes ante el altar e hizo venir a los de la acrópolis.
32 He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and that profane man's arm, which had been boastfully stretched out against the holy house of the Almighty;32 Les mostró la cabeza del infame Nicanor y el brazo que aquel blasfemo había tendido con insolencia contra la santa morada del Todopoderoso.
33 and he cut out the tongue of the ungodly Nicanor and said that he would give it piecemeal to the birds and hang up these rewards of his folly opposite the sanctuary.33 Después de mandar que cortaran la lengua del impío Nicanor, ordenó que se echara en trozos a los pájaros y que el brazo se colgara delante del santuario en pago por su insensatez.
34 And they all, looking to heaven, blessed the Lord who had manifested himself, saying, "Blessed is he who has kept his own place undefiled."34 Todos elevaron entonces sus bendiciones al cielo en honor del Señor que se les había manifestado. Decían: «Bendito tú que has conservado sin mancha tu morada».
35 And he hung Nicanor's head from the citadel, a clear and conspicuous sign to every one of the help of the Lord.35 Judas mandó colgar la cabeza de Nicanor en la acrópolis, como señal manifiesta y visible para todos del auxilio del Señor.
36 And they all decreed by public vote never to let this day go unobserved, but to celebrate the thirteenth day of the twelfth month -- which is called Adar in the Syrian language -- the day before Mordecai's day.36 Decretaron de común acuerdo no dejar pasar aquella jornada sin solemnizarla y celebrarla como fiesta el trece del mes decimosegundo —llamado adar en arameo—, víspera del Día de Mardoqueo.
37 This, then, is how matters turned out with Nicanor. And from that time the city has been in the possession of the Hebrews. So I too will here end my story.37 Así acabó la historia de Nicanor. Como desde aquella época la ciudad ha quedado en poder de los hebreos, yo también terminaré aquí mi obra.
38 If it is well told and to the point, that is what I myself desired; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that was the best I could do.38 Si la composición ha quedado bella y lograda, era eso lo que yo pretendía; si imperfecta y mediocre, diré que he hecho cuanto me ha sido posible.
39 For just as it is harmful to drink wine alone, or, again, to drink water alone, while wine mixed with water is sweet and delicious and enhances one's enjoyment, so also the style of the story delights the ears of those who read the work. And here will be the end.39 Es perjudicial beber vino solo o sola agua; en cambio, el vino mezclado con agua, es agradable; es un placer para el gusto. Igualmente el estilo variado del relato encanta los oídos de los que leen la obra. Doy aquí fin a mi trabajo.
