Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition LA SACRA BIBBIA
Now Gorgias took five thousand infantry and a thousand picked cavalry, and this division moved out by night1 Gorgia prese con sé cinquemila uomini e mille cavalieri scelti. L'armata partì di notte,
to fall upon the camp of the Jews and attack them suddenly. Men from the citadel were his guides.2 in modo da piombare addosso all'armata dei Giudei e colpirli all'improvviso. Gli uomini dell'Acra gli facevano da guida.
But Judas heard of it, and he and his mighty men moved out to attack the king's force in Emmaus3 Giuda, appena lo seppe, partì anch'egli con i suoi guerrieri per colpire le forze del re che erano in Emmaus,
while the division was still absent from the camp.4 mentre le schiere erano ancora disperse, lontane dal campo.
When Gorgias entered the camp of Judas by night, he found no one there, so he looked for them in the hills, because he said, "These men are fleeing from us."5 Gorgia giunse di notte al campo di Giuda, ma non vi trovò nessuno. Perciò si mise a cercarli tra i monti. Diceva, infatti: "Essi fuggono davanti a noi".
At daybreak Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand men, but they did not have armor and swords such as they desired.6 Giuda, invece, sul far del giorno, apparve nella pianura con tremila uomini, i quali però non avevano né armature né spade, come avrebbero desiderato.
And they saw the camp of the Gentiles, strong and fortified, with cavalry round about it; and these men were trained in war.7 Videro che l'accampamento dei gentili era potente e fortificato e che la cavalleria lo circondava all'intorno e tutti erano esperti di guerra.
But Judas said to the men who were with him, "Do not fear their numbers or be afraid when they charge.8 Giuda perciò disse agli uomini che erano con lui: "Non temete la loro moltitudine e non abbiate paura del loro ardore.
Remember how our fathers were saved at the Red Sea, when Pharaoh with his forces pursued them.9 Ricordate come i nostri padri furono salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando il faraone li inseguiva con un esercito.
And now let us cry to Heaven, to see whether he will favor us and remember his covenant with our fathers and crush this army before us today.10 Ora innalziamo grida al Cielo, se mai voglia compiacersi di noi, ricordarsi dell'alleanza dei padri e abbattere quest'armata davanti a noi oggi.
Then all the Gentiles will know that there is one who redeems and saves Israel."11 Allora tutte le genti riconosceranno che vi è chi redime e salva Israele".
When the foreigners looked up and saw them coming against them,12 Quando gli stranieri alzarono gli occhi e se li videro venire avanti,
they went forth from their camp to battle. Then the men with Judas blew their trumpets13 uscirono dall'accampamento per combattere. Quelli di Giuda, suonate le trombe,
and engaged in battle. The Gentiles were crushed and fled into the plain,14 si gettarono nella mischia e riuscirono ad abbattere i gentili che fuggirono verso la pianura,
and all those in the rear fell by the sword. They pursued them to Gazara, and to the plains of Idumea, and to Azotus and Jamnia; and three thousand of them fell.15 mentre quelli che erano rimasti indietro caddero sotto la spada. Li inseguirono fino a Ghezer e fino alle pianure dell'Idumea, di Asdod e di Iamnia; caddero circa tremila uomini.
Then Judas and his force turned back from pursuing them,16 Giuda pertanto, tornato indietro con l'esercito dal loro inseguimento,
and he said to the people, "Do not be greedy for plunder, for there is a battle before us;17 disse al popolo: "Mettete da parte la brama del bottino, poiché un'altra battaglia ci sta davanti.
Gorgias and his force are near us in the hills. But stand now against our enemies and fight them, and afterward seize the plunder boldly."18 Gorgia con l'esercito è sulla montagna vicina a noi. Ora perciò resistete davanti ai nostri nemici e combattete contro di essi; poi raccoglierete il bottino con libertà".
Just as Judas was finishing this speech, a detachment appeared, coming out of the hills.19 Mentre Giuda stava ancora per finire di dire tali cose, ecco che una schiera apparve, sbucando dalla montagna.
They saw that their army * had been put to flight, and that the Jews * were burning the camp, for the smoke that was seen showed what had happened.20 Videro che i loro erano stati messi in fuga e che il campo era in fiamme. Il fumo che si vedeva rivelava infatti ciò che era accaduto.
When they perceived this they were greatly frightened, and when they also saw the army of Judas drawn up in the plain for battle,21 Vedendo ciò, furono presi da grande paura. Quindi, vedendo pure che l'esercito di Giuda era in pianura, pronto per lo scontro,
they all fled into the land of the Philistines.22 se ne fuggirono tutti verso la terra dei Filistei.
Then Judas returned to plunder the camp, and they seized much gold and silver, and cloth dyed blue and sea purple, and great riches.23 Giuda allora tornò al bottino dell'accampamento e raccolse molto oro e argento, stoffe tinte di porpora violetta e marina e ricchezze in quantità.
On their return they sang hymns and praises to Heaven, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.24 Andando via, poi, inneggiavano e benedicevano il Cielo, perché è buono ed eterna è la sua misericordia.
Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.25 Fu quello un giorno di liberazione per Israele.
Those of the foreigners who escaped went and reported to Lysias all that had happened.26 Quanti degli stranieri si erano salvati, andati da Lisia, gli annunziarono tutto ciò che era successo.
When he heard it, he was perplexed and discouraged, for things had not happened to Israel as he had intended, nor had they turned out as the king had commanded him.27 Egli allora, udendo ciò, rimase sconvolto e scoraggiato, poiché le cose in Israele non erano andate com'egli desiderava né come il re gli aveva comandato.
But the next year he mustered sixty thousand picked infantrymen and five thousand cavalry to subdue them.28 Perciò l'anno seguente egli radunò sessantamila uomini scelti e cinquemila cavalieri per mandarli a combattere.
They came into Idumea and encamped at Beth-zur, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.29 Vennero nell'Idumea e si accamparono a Bet-Zur. Giuda allora gli mosse contro con diecimila uomini
When he saw that the army was strong, he prayed, saying, "Blessed art thou, O Savior of Israel, who didst crush the attack of the mighty warrior by the hand of thy servant David, and didst give the camp of the Philistines into the hands of Jonathan, the son of Saul, and of the man who carried his armor.30 e, quando ebbe veduto il loro potente schieramento, pregò dicendo: "Benedetto sei tu, o Salvatore d'Israele, che piegasti l'impeto del gigante per mano del tuo servo Davide e consegnasti l'esercito dei Filistei nelle mani di Gionata, figlio di Saul, e di colui che portava le sue armi.
So do thou hem in this army by the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be ashamed of their troops and their cavalry.31 Allo stesso modo fa' cadere questo esercito nelle mani del tuo popolo Israele; che restino confusi nella loro forza e con la loro cavalleria.
Fill them with cowardice; melt the boldness of their strength; let them tremble in their destruction.32 Immetti in loro spavento e spezza l'audacia della loro forza, e siano travolti nella loro disfatta.
Strike them down with the sword of those who love thee, and let all who know thy name praise thee with hymns."33 Gettali sotto la spada di coloro che ti amano; ti lodino con inni tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome".
Then both sides attacked, and there fell of the army of Lysias five thousand men; they fell in action. *34 Si scagliarono gli uni contro gli altri e caddero davanti a loro circa cinquemila uomini del campo di Lisia.
And when Lysias saw the rout of his troops and observed the boldness which inspired those of Judas, and how ready they were either to live or to die nobly, he departed to Antioch and enlisted mercenaries, to invade Judea again with an even larger army.35 Lisia, vedendo la ritirata della sua armata e l'audacia dimostrata da quelli di Giuda, come cioè erano pronti a vivere o a morire da prodi, fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove cominciò a reclutare mercenari stranieri più numerosi per portarsi di nuovo in Giudea.
Then said Judas and his brothers, "Behold, our enemies are crushed; let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it."36 Intanto Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: "Ecco, i nostri nemici sono stati sconfitti. Andiamo perciò a purificare il tempio e a restaurarlo".
So all the army assembled and they went up to Mount Zion.37 Si riunì, allora, tutto l'esercito e salirono sul monte Sion.
And they saw the sanctuary desolate, the altar profaned, and the gates burned. In the courts they saw bushes sprung up as in a thicket, or as on one of the mountains. They saw also the chambers of the priests in ruins.38 Videro così il santuario deserto, l'altare profanato, le porte bruciate, le piante cresciute nei cortili come in un bosco o come su una montagna, le celle in rovina.
Then they rent their clothes, and mourned with great lamentation, and sprinkled themselves with ashes.39 Si stracciarono le vesti, fecero un grande lamento, si cosparsero di cenere,
They fell face down on the ground, and sounded the signal on the trumpets, and cried out to Heaven.40 caddero con la faccia a terra e, suonate le trombe per segnale, elevarono grida al cielo.
Then Judas detailed men to fight against those in the citadel until he had cleansed the sanctuary.41 Giuda allora ordinò agli uomini di combattere quelli che erano nell'Acra fino a quando egli non avesse purificato il santuario.
He chose blameless priests devoted to the law,42 Scelse pure dei sacerdoti senza macchia, osservanti della legge,
and they cleansed the sanctuary and removed the defiled stones to an unclean place.43 i quali purificarono il santuario e trasportarono le pietre della contaminazione in un luogo impuro.
They deliberated what to do about the altar of burnt offering, which had been profaned.44 Si consultarono poi circa l'altare degli olocausti che era stato profanato: "Che dobbiamo fare?".
And they thought it best to tear it down, lest it bring reproach upon them, for the Gentiles had defiled it. So they tore down the altar,45 Venne loro la felice idea di demolirlo, affinché non fosse per loro causa di disonore, poiché i gentili lo avevano contaminato. Demolirono, dunque, l'altare
and stored the stones in a convenient place on the temple hill until there should come a prophet to tell what to do with them.46 e ne deposero le pietre sul monte del tempio, in un luogo conveniente, in attesa che venga un profeta e che si pronunzi a loro riguardo.
Then they took unhewn * stones, as the law directs, and built a new altar like the former one.47 Poi presero pietre intatte conformi alla legge e costruirono un nuovo altare sul modello del precedente.
They also rebuilt the sanctuary and the interior of the temple, and consecrated the courts.48 Ripararono il santuario e l'interno del tempio e consacrarono i cortili.
They made new holy vessels, and brought the lampstand, the altar of incense, and the table into the temple.49 Fecero fare nuovi arredi sacri e portarono dentro il tempio il candelabro, l'altare dei profumi e la tavola.
Then they burned incense on the altar and lighted the lamps on the lampstand, and these gave light in the temple.50 Bruciarono incenso sull'altare e accesero le lampade del candelabro, che risplendettero nel tempio.
They placed the bread on the table and hung up the curtains. Thus they finished all the work they had undertaken.51 Posero sulla tavola i pani, distesero le cortine e terminarono tutti i lavori che avevano intrapreso.
Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, *52 Il giorno 25 del nono mese, cioè il mese di Casleu dell'anno 148, si levarono di buon mattino
they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of burnt offering which they had built.53 e offrirono un sacrificio, in conformità alla legge, sul nuovo altare degli olocausti che avevano costruito.
At the very season and on the very day that the Gentiles had profaned it, it was dedicated with songs and harps and lutes and cymbals.54 Esattamente nel tempo e nel giorno in cui i gentili lo avevano profanato, esso fu inaugurato con inni e a suon di cetre, di arpe e di cembali.
All the people fell on their faces and worshiped and blessed Heaven, who had prospered them.55 Tutto il popolo cadde con la faccia a terra, adorando e benedicendo il Cielo che li aveva condotti al successo.
So they celebrated the dedication of the altar for eight days, and offered burnt offerings with gladness; they offered a sacrifice of deliverance and praise.56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, offrirono sacrifici con allegrezza e offrirono pure un sacrificio di ringraziamento e di lode.
They decorated the front of the temple with golden crowns and small shields; they restored the gates and the chambers for the priests, and furnished them with doors.57 Ornarono la facciata del tempio con corone d'oro e scudi, inaugurarono le porte e le celle e vi rimisero i battenti.
There was very great gladness among the people, and the reproach of the Gentiles was removed.58 Vi fu una stragrande allegrezza in mezzo al popolo e così fu cancellato l'obbrobrio dei gentili.
Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel determined that every year at that season the days of dedication of the altar should be observed with gladness and joy for eight days, beginning with the twenty-fifth day of the month of Chislev.59 Poi Giuda, i suoi fratelli e tutta l'assemblea d'Israele, stabilirono che i giorni della dedicazione dell'altare si celebrassero a loro tempo, ogni anno, per otto giorni, a partire dal 25 del mese di Casleu, con allegrezza e gioia.
At that time they fortified Mount Zion with high walls and strong towers round about, to keep the Gentiles from coming and trampling them down as they had done before.60 In quello stesso tempo costruirono pure, tutto intorno al monte Sion, alte mura e torri robuste per impedire che i gentili venissero a calpestarlo, come avevano fatto in precedenza.
And he stationed a garrison there to hold it. He also * fortified Beth-zur, so that the people might have a stronghold that faced Idumea.61 Giuda vi stabilì un presidio per difenderlo e poi fortificò anche Bet-Zur, affinché il popolo avesse una difesa contro l'Idumea.
