1 The next day Holofernes ordered his whole army, and all the allies who had joined him, to break camp and move against Bethulia, and to seize the passes up into the hill country and make war on the Israelites.	1 Il giorno seguente Oloferne diede ordine a tutto il suo esercito e a tutta la moltitudine di coloro che si erano aggiunti a lui come alleati di muovere il campo contro Betulia, occupare le vie d'accesso della montagna e far la guerra contro gl'Israeliti.
2 So all their warriors moved their camp that day; their force of men of war was one hundred and seventy thousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry, together with the baggage and the foot soldiers handling it, a very great multitude.	2 In quel giorno quindi ogni uomo valido tra loro si mise in marcia. L'esercito di quei guerrieri era di centosettantamila fanti e di dodicimila cavalieri, senza contare gli addetti ai servizi e altri uomini ch'erano con loro a piedi, in numero immenso.
3 They encamped in the valley near Bethulia, beside the spring, and they spread out in breadth over Dothan as far as Balbaim and in length from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.	3 Si accamparono nella vallata vicino a Betulia presso la sorgente, estendendosi in profondità sopra Dotain fino a Belbain e in lunghezza da Betulia fino a Kiamon situata dirimpetto a Esdrelon.
4 When the Israelites saw their vast numbers they were greatly terrified, and every one said to his neighbor, "These men will now lick up the face of the whole land; neither the high mountains nor the valleys nor the hills will bear their weight."	4 Quando videro la moltitudine di costoro, gl'Israeliti rimasero profondamente turbati e si dicevano l'un l'altro: "Ora costoro brucheranno la superficie di tutto il paese e né i monti più alti né le valli o le colline potranno resistere al loro peso".
5 Then each man took up his weapons, and when they had kindled fires on their towers they remained on guard all that night.	5 Ognuno prese le proprie armi e dopo aver acceso fuochi sulle torri, stettero a fare la guardia per tutta quella notte.
6 On the second day Holofernes led out all his cavalry in full view of the Israelites in Bethulia,	6 Il secondo giorno Oloferne fece uscire tutta la sua cavalleria alla vista degl'Israeliti ch'erano in Betulia,
7 and examined the approaches to the city, and visited the springs that supplied their water, and seized them and set guards of soldiers over them, and then returned to his army.	7 ispezionò le vie d'accesso alla loro città e, ricercate le sorgenti d'acqua, le occupò collocandovi guarnigioni di uomini armati; quindi egli ritornò al suo esercito.
8 Then all the chieftains of the people of Esau and all the leaders of the Moabites and the commanders of the coastland came to him and said,	8 Allora gli si accostarono tutti i capi dei figli di Esaù, tutti i comandanti del popolo di Moab e gli strateghi della costa e gli dissero:
9 "Let our lord hear a word, lest his army be defeated.	9 "Voglia ascoltare il nostro signore una parola, per evitare qualunque guaio al tuo esercito.
10 For these people, the Israelites, do not rely on their spears but on the height of the mountains where they live, for it is not easy to reach the tops of their mountains.	10 Questo popolo degl'Israeliti non fa affidamento tanto sulle proprie lance, quanto sull'altezza dei monti sui quali essi abitano; certo non è facile scalare le creste dei loro monti.
11 Therefore, my lord, do not fight against them in battle array, and not a man of your army will fall.	11 Pertanto, o signore, non combattere contro di loro, come si usa in una battaglia ordinata, così nessun uomo del tuo esercito cadrà.
12 Remain in your camp, and keep all the men in your forces with you; only let your servants take possession of the spring of water that flows from the foot of the mountain--	12 Rimani nel tuo accampamento e fa' ivi rimanere ogni uomo del tuo esercito; i tuoi servitori s'impadroniscano della sorgente d'acqua, che scaturisce alla radice del monte,
13 for this is where all the people of Bethulia get their water. So thirst will destroy them, and they will give up their city. We and our people will go up to the tops of the nearby mountains and camp there to keep watch that not a man gets out of the city.	13 perché di là attingono acqua tutti gli abitanti di Betulia. La sete li consumerà e consegneranno la loro città. Noi e la nostra gente saliremo sulle vicine creste dei monti, ci accamperemo su di esse per sorvegliare che nessun uomo esca dalla città.
14 They and their wives and children will waste away with famine, and before the sword reaches them they will be strewn about in the streets where they live.	14 Saranno consunti dalla fame, loro, le loro mogli e i loro figli, e prima che la spada piombi su di loro, giaceranno distesi sulle piazze della loro dimora.
15 So you will pay them back with evil, because they rebelled and did not receive you peaceably."	15 Così darai loro un duro contraccambio, perché si sono ribellati e non sono voluti uscire pacificamente incontro alla tua persona".
16 These words pleased Holofernes and all his servants, and he gave orders to do as they had said.	16 Il loro discorso piacque a Oloferne e a tutti i suoi ministri e perciò egli diede ordine di fare come avevano proposto.
17 So the army of the Ammonites moved forward, together with five thousand Assyrians, and they encamped in the valley and seized the water supply and the springs of the Israelites.	17 Si mosse un distaccamento di Moabiti e cinquemila Assiri con essi si accamparono nella vallata occupando i punti d'acqua e le sorgenti degl'Israeliti.
18 And the sons of Esau and the sons of Ammon went up and encamped in the hill country opposite Dothan; and they sent some of their men toward the south and the east, toward Acraba, which is near Chusi beside the brook Mochmur. The rest of the Assyrian army encamped in the plain, and covered the whole face of the land, and their tents and supply trains spread out in great number, and they formed a vast multitude.	18 Dal canto loro i figli di Esaù e gli Ammoniti salirono e si accamparono sulla montagna di fronte a Dotain, donde inviarono parte dei loro uomini verso meridione e ad oriente di fronte a Egrebel, situata vicino a Chus, sul torrente Mochmur. Il resto dell'esercito degli Assiri si accampò nella pianura, ricoprendo tutta la superficie del paese. Le tende e i loro equipaggiamenti, essendo molto ingenti, formavano un accampamento di grande mole.
19 The people of Israel cried out to the Lord their God, for their courage failed, because all their enemies had surrounded them and there was no way of escape from them.	19 Gl'Israeliti allora elevarono grida al Signore, loro Dio, con l'animo scoraggiato, poiché tutti i loro nemici li avevano circondati e non era possibile evadere di mezzo a loro.
20 The whole Assyrian army, their infantry, chariots, and cavalry, surrounded them for thirty-four days, until all the vessels of water belonging to every inhabitant of Bethulia were empty;	20 Il campo assiro al completo, fanti, carri e cavalli, proseguì l'accerchiamento per trentaquattro giorni, e a tutti gli abitanti di Betulia si esaurì ogni recipiente d'acqua.
21 their cisterns were going dry, and they did not have enough water to drink their fill for a single day, because it was measured out to them to drink.2	21 Le cisterne si vuotarono e non ebbero acqua da bere a sazietà neppure per un giorno, perché veniva loro distribuita in misura razionata.
22 Their children lost heart, and the women and young men fainted from thirst and fell down in the streets of the city and in the passages through the gates; there was no strength left in them any longer.	22 I loro fanciulli si accasciavano, le donne e i giovani venivano meno per la sete e cadevano nelle piazze della città e agli sbocchi delle porte, non rimanendo in essi alcuna energia.
23 Then all the people, the young men, the women, and the children, gathered about Uzziah and the rulers of the city and cried out with a loud voice, and said before all the elders,	23 Allora il popolo, giovani, donne e bambini, si radunò intorno a Ozia e ai capi della città; e gridarono ad alta voce dicendo al cospetto di tutti gli anziani:
24 "God be judge between you and us! For you have done us a great injury in not making peace with the Assyrians.	24 "Che Dio sia giudice tra voi e noi, perché ci avete fatto un grave torto, non avendo svolto trattative di pace con gli Assiri.
25 For now we have no one to help us; God has sold us into their hands, to strew us on the ground before them with thirst and utter destruction.	25 Ora non c'è nessuno che ci possa aiutare, perché Dio ci ha venduto nelle loro mani, per essere abbattuti davanti a loro dalla sete e da grande rovina.
26 Now call them in and surrender the whole city to the army of Holofernes and to all his forces, to be plundered.	26 Ormai chiamateli e consegnate la città intera alla gente di Oloferne e a tutto il suo esercito perché la saccheggino.
27 For it would be better for us to be captured by them; for we will be slaves, but our lives will be spared, and we shall not witness the death of our babes before our eyes, or see our wives and children draw their last breath.	27 E' meglio per noi diventare loro preda; saremo certo loro schiavi, ma almeno rimarremo vivi e non vedremo con i nostri occhi la morte dei nostri bambini, né le donne e i figli nostri esalare l'anima.
28 We call to witness against you heaven and earth and our God, the Lord of our fathers, who punishes us according to our sins and the sins of our fathers. Let him not do this day the things which we have described!"	28 Vi scongiuriamo per il cielo e la terra, per il nostro Dio e Signore dei nostri padri, che ci punisce secondo i nostri peccati e le colpe dei nostri padri, di agire oggi stesso come vi abbiamo detto".
29 Then great and general lamentation arose throughout the assembly, and they cried out to the Lord God with a loud voice.	29 Vi fu allora un gran pianto generale di tutti in mezzo all'assemblea e a gran voce gridarono al Signore Dio.
30 And Uzziah said to them, "Have courage, my brothers! Let us hold out for five more days; by that time the Lord our God will restore to us his mercy, for he will not forsake us utterly.	30 Ozia disse loro: "Coraggio, fratelli, resistiamo ancora cinque giorni, durante i quali il Signore, nostro Dio, ci userà di nuovo misericordia; certo egli non ci abbandonerà fino all'ultimo.
31 But if these days pass by, and no help comes for us, I will do what you say."	31 Se, passati questi giorni, non ci giungerà alcun aiuto, farò come avete proposto".
32 Then he dismissed the people to their various posts, and they went up on the walls and towers of their city. The women and children he sent home. And they were greatly depressed in the city.	32 Così rimandò il popolo, ciascuno nel suo quartiere; gli uomini ritornarono sulle mura e sulle torri della città, mentre rimandò le donne e i bambini alle loro case, ma nella città si stava in grande costernazione.
