1 Then Samuel died, and all of Israel gathered together, and they mourned him. And they buried him at his house in Ramah. And David, rising up, descended to the desert of Paran.	1 Morì Samuele e tutti gli Israeliti si radunarono per piangerlo e, seppellirlo nella sua proprietà a Rama. Poi David, senza indugio, scese verso il deserto di Paran.
2 Now there was a certain man in the wilderness of Maon, and his possessions were at Carmel. And this man was exceedingly great. And three thousand sheep, and one thousand goats were his. And it happened that he was shearing his sheep at Carmel.	2 C'era a Maon un uomo la cui fattoria si trovava a Charmel. Costui era molto ricco: aveva tremila pecore e mille capre e stava appunto tosando il suo gregge a Charmel.
3 Now the name of this man was Nabal. And the name of his wife was Abigail. And she was a very prudent and beautiful woman. But her husband was hard-hearted, and very wicked, and malicious. And he was of the stock of Caleb.	3 Quest'uomo si chiamava Nabal e sua moglie Abigail, donna di buon senso e avvenente d’aspetto, mentre lui era duro e di brutte maniere: era un Chalebita.
4 Therefore, when David, in the desert, had heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep,	4 David nel deserto seppe che Nabal stava tosando il gregge
5 he sent ten young men, and he said to them: “Ascend to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name peacefully.	5 e mandò dieci giovani, ai quali disse: «Salite a Charmel, andate da Nabal, chiedetegli a mio nome se sta bene
6 And you shall say: ‘Peace be to my brothers and to you, and peace to your house, and peace to whatever you have.	6 e ditegli: “Evviva! Pace a te, pace alla tua casa, pace a tutte le tue cose!
7 I have heard that your shepherds, who were with us in the desert, were shearing. We have never troubled them, nor was anything from the flock missing to them at any time, during the entire time that they have been with us in Carmel.	7 Dunque, ho sentito che i tosatori sono da te. Ora i tuoi pastori sono stati con noi nel deserto e non abbiamo fatto loro offesa né venne a mancare nulla durante tutto il tempo nel quale essi furono a Charmel.
8 Question your servants, and they will tell you. Now therefore, may your servants find favor in your eyes. For we have arrived on a good day. Whatever your hand will find, give it to your servants and to your son David.’ ”	8 Chiedi ai tuoi giovani ed essi ti racconteranno. Trovino dunque questi giovani grazia ai tuoi occhi, poiché siamo giunti in una giornata solenne: concedi ai tuoi servitori e a tuo figlio David ciò che ti viene alla mano”».
9 And when the servants of David had arrived, they spoke to Nabal all these words in the name of David. And then they were silent.	9 I giovani di David andarono e parlarono a Nabal proprio in questi termini, in nome di David. Poi rimasero in attesa.
10 But Nabal, responding to the servants of David, said: “Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? Today, servants who are fleeing from their lords are increasing.	10 Rispose Nabal ai servitori di David e disse: «Chi è David e chi è il figlio di Jesse? Oggi diventano numerosi i servitori che fuggono dai loro signori!
11 Therefore, shall I take my bread, and my water, and the meat of the cattle that I have slain for my shearers, and give it to men, when I do not know where they are from?”	11 E io dovrò prendere il mio pane, la mia acqua e la carne che ho macellato per i miei tosatori e dovrò darli a uomini che non so donde vengano!»
12 And so the servants of David traveled back along their way. And returning, they went and reported to him all the words that he had said.	12 I giovani di David si voltarono per la loro strada e tornarono. Giunsero e gli riferirono tutte quelle parole.
13 Then David said to his servants, “Let each one gird his sword.” And each one girded his sword. And David also girded his sword. And about four hundred men followed David. But two hundred remained behind with the supplies.	13 Allora David disse ai suoi uomini: «Ognuno cinga la spada!» Ognuno cinse la spada e anche David cinse la spada, Poi quattrocento uomini seguirono David, mentre duecento rimasero presso i bagagli.
14 Then it was reported to Abigail, the wife of Nabal, by one of his servants, saying: “Behold, David has sent messengers from the desert, so that they might speak kindly to our lord. But he turned them away.	14 Frattanto ad Abigail, moglie di Nabal, un giovane fra i tanti venne a riferire: «Ecco, David ha inviato messaggeri dal deserto per benedire il nostro padrone, ma questi si è scagliato contro di loro.
15 These men were good enough to us, and were not troublesome. Neither did we ever lose anything, during the entire time that we conversed with them in the desert.	15 Eppure quegli uomini furono con noi molto buoni: non ricevemmo offesa né ci fu fatto mancare nulla in tutto il tempo in cui si andò con loro quando noi eravamo in campagna.
16 They were a wall to us, as much in the night as in the day, during all the days that we were with them, pasturing the sheep.	16 Un muro sono stati per noi, di notte e di giorno, tutto il tempo che passammo con loro, mentre si pascolava il gregge!
17 For this reason, consider and realize what you should do. For evil has been decided against your husband and against your house. And he is a son of Belial, so that no one is able to speak to him.”	17 Su, dunque, interessati e vedi ciò che puoi fare: certo è stato deciso qualche guaio contro il nostro signore e contro tutta la sua casa; egli è un buono a nulla e non gli si può parlare».
18 And so Abigail hurried, and she took two hundred loaves, and two vessels of wine, and five cooked sheep, and five measures of cooked grain, and one hundred clusters of dried grapes, and two hundred masses of dried figs, and she set them upon donkeys.	18 In fretta Abigail prese duecento pani, due otri di vino, cinque pecore già pronte, cinque sea di grano abbrustolito, cento grappoli di uva passa e duecento stiacciate di fichi: pose tutto sugli asini
19 And she said to her servants: “Go before me. Behold, I will follow after your back.” But she did not reveal it to her husband, Nabal.	19 e disse ai servitori: «Precedetemi: ecco, vi seguo immediatamente». A suo marito Nabal non fece sapere nulla.
20 And when she had climbed on a donkey, and was descending to the base of the mountain, David and his men were descending to meet her. And she met them.	20 Allora, mentre essa, sul dorso di un asino, discendeva per una parte nascosta del monte, ecco, David e i suoi uomini stavano scendendo verso di lei, così che essa si imbatté in loro.
21 And David said: “Truly, in vain have I preserved all that was his in the wilderness, so that nothing perished out of all that belonged to him. And he has repaid evil to me for good.	21 David stava dicendo: «Proprio invano ho custodito nel deserto tutto ciò che apparteneva a costui, così che non è venuto a mancare nulla della sua roba: egli mi ha ricambiato male per bene.
22 May God do these things, by the enemies of David, and may he add these other things, if I leave behind until morning, out of all that belongs to him, anything that urinates against a wall.”	22 Questo e questo malanno mandi Dio ai nemici di David se, di tutti i suoi, lascerò vivo fino all’alba chi urina contro il muro!»
23 Then, when Abigail had seen David, she hurried and descended from the donkey. And she fell upon her face before David, and she reverenced on the ground.	23 Abigail, scorto David, scese in fretta dall’asino e, cadendo sulla sua faccia innanzi a David, si prostrò fino a terra.
24 And she fell at his feet, and she said: “May this iniquity be upon me, my lord. I beg you, let your handmaid speak to your ears, and listen to the words of your servant.	24 Poi, cadendo ai piedi di lui, disse: «In me, signor mio, è la colpa. Perciò la tua schiava possa parlare alle tue orecchie; tu ascolta le parole della tua schiava!
25 Let not my lord, the king, I beseech you, set his heart upon this iniquitous man, Nabal. For in accord with his name, he is senseless, and foolishness is with him. But I, your handmaid, did not see your servants, my lord, whom you had sent.	25 Il mio signore non faccia caso a quel buono a nulla di Nabal, poiché egli è come è il suo nome: “insensato” è il suo nome e l’insensatezza è con lui. E io tua schiava non ho visto i giovani che tu, mio signore, avevi inviato.
26 Now therefore, my lord, as your soul lives, and as the Lord lives, who has kept your hand to yourself, and has prevented you from coming to blood: now, let your enemies be like Nabal, and like all those who are seeking evil for my lord.	26 Ora dunque, per la vita di Jahvè e per la tua, di Jahvè che ti ha impedito di giungere al sangue e di farti ragione con la mano; ora dunque siano come Nabal i tuoi nemici e coloro che vanno cercando di far del male al mio signore!
27 Because of this, accept this blessing, which your handmaid has brought to you, my lord. And give it to the young men who follow you, my lord.	27 Adesso, questa benedizione che la tua schiava ha portato al mio signore, sia data ai giovani che camminano sempre sui passi del mio signore!
28 Forgive the iniquity of your handmaid. For the Lord will surely make for you, my lord, a faithful house, because you, my lord, fight the battles of the Lord. Therefore, let no evil be found in you all the days of your life.	28 Scusa il fallo della tua schiava, poiché certamente Jahvè ti farà una casa stabile, perché tu, mio signore, combatti le guerre di Jahvè, né malvagità può trovarsi in te, fosse pure in uno solo dei tuoi giorni.
29 For if a man, at any time, will rise up, pursuing you and seeking your life, the life of my lord will be preserved, as if in the sheave of the living, with the Lord your God. But the lives of your enemies will be spun around, as if with the force of a whirling sling.	29 E, sebbene si sia levato qualcuno a perseguitarti e a cercar la tua anima, tuttavia l’anima del mio signore starà ben chiusa nello scrigno della vita presso Jahvè tuo Dio: l’anima invece dei tuoi nemici egli la scaglierà nel cavo di una fionda.
30 Therefore, when the Lord will have done for you, my lord, all the good that he has spoken about you, and when he will have appointed you as leader over Israel,	30 Allora, quando Jahvè ti avrà fatto proprio tutto il bene che egli ha detto a tuo riguardo, ti avrà cioè stabilito capo su Israele,
31 this will not be for you a regret or a scruple of the heart, my lord, that you had shed innocent blood, or had taken revenge for yourself. And when the Lord will have done well for my lord, you shall remember your handmaid.”	31 allora ciò non sarà per il mio signore ragione di titubanza e scrupolo di coscienza: l’aver versato sangue inutilmente ed esserti fatto giustizia di tua mano. Quando Jahvè ti avrà fatto del bene, tu ricordati della tua schiava».
32 And David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me. And blessed is your eloquence.	32 David disse ad Abigail: «Benedetto Jahvè, Dio di Israele, che ti ha inviata, oggi, incontro a me!
33 And blessed are you, who prevented me today from going to blood, and from taking revenge for myself with my own hand.	33 Benedetto il tuo senno e benedetta tu che mi ha impedito, oggi, di giungere al sangue e di fare giustizia di mia mano!
34 But instead, as the Lord God of Israel lives, he has prevented me from doing evil to you. But if you had not come quickly to meet me, there would not have been left to Nabal by the morning light, anything that urinates against a wall.”	34 Diversamente, per la vita di Jahvè, Dio di Israele, che mi ha trattenuto dal farti del male, senza dubbio, se tu non ti fossi affrettata e non mi fossi venuta incontro, ti assicuro, non sarebbe rimasto a Nabal, prima della luce del mattino, neppure uno di coloro che urinano contro il muro!»
35 Then David received from her hand all that she had brought to him. And he said to her: “Go in peace to your own house. Behold, I have heeded your voice, and I have honored your face.”	35 Poi David accettò dalla mano di lei ciò che essa gli aveva portato e le disse: «Sali tranquillamente alla tua casa: vedi, ho ascoltato la tua voce e ti ho fatto buona accoglienza».
36 Then Abigail went to Nabal. And behold, he was holding a feast for himself in his house, like the feast of a king. And the heart of Nabal was cheerful. For he was greatly inebriated. And she did not reveal a word to him, small or great, until morning.	36 Quando Abigail giunse presso Nabal, ecco, egli teneva in casa un banchetto come il banchetto di un re e nel cuore di Nabal c’era la più matta allegria; siccome però egli era ubriaco fradicio, essa non gli raccontò nulla, né tanto né poco, fino alla luce del mattino.
37 Then, at first light, when Nabal had digested his wine, his wife revealed to him these words, and his heart died within himself, and he became like a stone.	37 All’alba, quando il vino svaporò da Nabal, come la moglie gli riferì le cose accadute, gli morì il cuore in seno ed egli divenne come una pietra.
38 And after ten days had passed, the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.	38 Passarono dieci giorni; Jahvè colpì Nabal che morì.
39 And when David had heard that Nabal was dead, he said: “Blessed is the Lord, who has judged the case of my reproach at the hand of Nabal, and who has preserved his servant from evil. And the Lord has repaid the malice of Nabal upon his own head.” Then David sent and he spoke with Abigail, so that he might take her to himself as wife.	39 David seppe che Nabal era morto e disse: «Benedetto Jac che si è fatto difensore della mia causa per l’onta da parte di Nabal e ha preservato il suo servitore dal male: Jahvè ha fatto cadere la malizia di Nabal sul suo stesso capo». Poi David mandò a parlare di Abigail allo scopo di sposarla.
40 And David’s servants went to Abigail at Carmel, and they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you, so that he might take you to himself as wife.”	40 I servitori di David andarono da Abigail a Charmel e le parlarono in questo modo: «David ci ha mandato da te a prenderti per sua moglie».
41 And rising up, she reverenced prone on the ground, and she said, “Behold, let your servant be a handmaid, to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.”	41 Essa si alzò e chinò la faccia a terra; poi disse: «Ecco, la tua serva sarà come una schiava per lavare i piedi dei servitori del mio signore».
42 And Abigail rose up and hurried, and she climbed upon a donkey, and five girls went with her, her attendants. And she followed the messengers of David, and she became his wife.	42 In fretta Abigail si alzò, montò sull’asino con cinque giovani che venivano sui suoi passi; seguì i messaggeri di David e divenne sua moglie.
43 Moreover, David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel. And both of them were his wives.	43 David aveva preso anche Akhinoam da Jizreel: tutte e due gli furono mogli.
44 Then Saul gave his daughter Michal, the wife of David, to Palti, the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.	44 Allora Saul diede la figlia Michol, sposa di David, a Palti, figlio di Laish da Gallim.
