And having called together his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to cure every sickness and every infirmity.1 He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to drivethem out and to cure all kinds of disease and all kinds of il ness.
Now the names of the twelve Apostles are these: the First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother,2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is known as Peter, and his brotherAndrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
James of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, and James of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus,3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax col ector; James the son of Alphaeus, andThaddaeus;
Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who was also his betrayer.
Jesus sent these twelve, instructing them, saying: “Do not travel by the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into the city of the Samaritans,5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as fol ows: 'Do not make your way to gentile territory,and do not enter any Samaritan town;
but instead go to the sheep who have fallen away from the house of Israel.6 go instead to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.
And going forth, preach, saying: ‘For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.’7 And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.
Cure the infirm, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You have received freely, so give freely.8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin-diseases, drive out devils. Youreceived without charge, give without charge.
Do not choose to possess gold, nor silver, nor money in your belts,9 Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with coppers for your purses,
nor provisions for the journey, nor two tunics, nor shoes, nor a staff. For the laborer deserves his portion.10 with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the labourer deserves hiskeep.
Now, into whatever city or town you will enter, inquire as to who is worthy within it. And stay there until you depart.11 'Whatever town or vil age you go into, seek out someone worthy and stay with him until you leave.
Then, when you enter into the house, greet it, saying, ‘Peace to this house.’12 As you enter his house, salute it,
And if, indeed, that house is worthy, your peace will rest upon it. But if it is not worthy, your peace will return to you.13 and if the house deserves it, may your peace come upon it; if it does not, may your peace come backto you.
And whoever has neither received you, nor listened to your words, departing from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.14 And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the houseor town shake the dust from your feet.
Amen I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.15 In truth I tel you, on the Day of Judgement it wil be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah than forthat town.
Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be as prudent as serpents and as simple as doves.16 Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as snakes and yet innocent asdoves.
But beware of men. For they will hand you over to councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.17 'Be prepared for people to hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues.
And you shall be led before both rulers and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.18 You will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them and to the gentiles.
But when they hand you over, do not choose to think about how or what to speak. For what to speak shall be given to you in that hour.19 But when you are handed over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to saywil be given to you when the time comes,
For it is not you who will be speaking, but the Spirit of your Father, who will speak in you.20 because it is not you who wil be speaking; the Spirit of your Father wil be speaking in you.
And brother will hand over brother to death, and father will hand over son. And children will rise up against parents and bring about their deaths.21 'Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children wil come forward against theirparents and have them put to death.
And you will be hated by all for the sake of my name. But whoever will have persevered, even to the end, the same shall be saved.22 You will be universally hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end wil besaved.
Now when they persecute you in one city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you will not have exhausted all the cities of Israel, before the Son of man returns.23 If they persecute you in one town, take refuge in the next; and if they persecute you in that, takerefuge in another. In truth I tel you, you wil not have gone the round of the towns of Israel before the Son of mancomes.
The disciple is not above the teacher, nor is the servant above his master.24 'Disciple is not superior to teacher, nor slave to master.
It is sufficient for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant, like his master. If they have called the Father of the family, ‘Beelzebub,’ how much more those of his household?25 It is enough for disciple to grow to be like teacher, and slave like master. If they have called themaster of the house "Beelzebul", how much more the members of his household?
Therefore, do not fear them. For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed, nor hidden that shall not be known.26 'So do not be afraid of them. Everything now covered up wil be uncovered, and everything nowhidden wil be made clear.
What I tell you in darkness, speak in the light. And what you hear whispered in the ear, preach above the rooftops.27 What I say to you in the dark, tel in the daylight; what you hear in whispers, proclaim from thehousetops.
And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. But instead fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell.28 'Do not be afraid of those who kil the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroyboth body and soul in hell.
Are not two sparrows sold for one small coin? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father.29 Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny? And yet not one falls to the ground without your Fatherknowing.
For even the hairs of your head have all been numbered.30 Why, every hair on your head has been counted.
Therefore, do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.31 So there is no need to be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Therefore, everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father, who is in heaven.32 'So if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of human beings, I wil declare myself for him inthe presence of my Father in heaven.
But whoever will have denied me before men, I also will deny before my Father, who is in heaven.33 But the one who disowns me in the presence of human beings, I wil disown in the presence of myFather in heaven.
Do not think that I came to send peace upon the earth. I came, not to send peace, but the sword.34 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, buta sword.
For I came to divide a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.35 For I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law;
And the enemies of a man will be those of his own household.36 a person's enemies will be the members of his own household.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever loves son or daughter above me is not worthy of me.37 'No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter tome is worthy of me.
And whoever does not take up his cross, and follow me is not worthy of me.38 Anyone who does not take his cross and fol ow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.
Whoever finds his life, will lose it. And whoever will have lost his life because of me, shall find it.39 Anyone who finds his life wil lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake wil find it.
Whoever receives you, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.40 'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one whosent me.
Whoever receives a prophet, in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet. And whoever receives the just in the name of the just shall receive the reward of the just.41 'Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet wil have a prophet's reward; and anyonewho welcomes an upright person because he is upright wil have the reward of an upright person.
And whoever shall give, even to one of the least of these, a cup of cold water to drink, solely in the name of a disciple: Amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.”42 'If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,then in truth I tel you, he wil most certainly not go without his reward.'
