| 1 A Psalm of David, which he sang to the Lord because of the words of Cush, the son of Jemini. | 1 A plaintive song of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, the Benjaminite. |
| 2 O Lord, my God, in you I have hoped. Save me from all those who persecute me, and free me: | 2 LORD my God, in you I take refuge; rescue me; save me from all who pursue me, |
| 3 lest at any time, like a lion, he might seize my soul, while there is no one to redeem me, nor any who can save. | 3 Lest they maul me like lions, tear me to pieces with none to save. |
| 4 O Lord, my God, if there is iniquity in my hands, if I have done this: | 4 LORD my God, if I am at fault in this, if there is guilt on my hands, |
| 5 if I have repaid those who rendered evils to me, may I deservedly fall away empty before my enemies: | 5 If I have repaid my friend with evil-- I spared even those who hated me without cause-- |
| 6 let the enemy pursue my soul, and take hold of it, and trample my life into the earth, and drag down my glory into the dust. | 6 Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, trample my life to the ground, and leave me dishonored in the dust.Selah |
| 7 Rise up, Lord, in your anger. And be exalted to the borders of my enemies. And rise up, O Lord my God, according to the precept that you commanded, | 7 Rise up, LORD, in your anger; rise against the fury of my foes. Wake to judge as you have decreed. |
| 8 and a congregation of people will surround you. And, because of this, return on high. | 8 Have the assembly of the peoples gather about you; sit on your throne high above them, |
| 9 The Lord judges the people. Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice and according to my innocence within me. | 9 O LORD, judge of the nations. Grant me justice, LORD, for I am blameless, free of any guilt. |
| 10 The wickedness of sinners will be consumed, and you will direct the just: the examiner of hearts and temperaments is God. | 10 Bring the malice of the wicked to an end; uphold the innocent, O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds. |
| 11 Just is my help from the Lord, who saves the upright of heart. | 11 A shield before me is God who saves the honest heart. |
| 12 God is a just judge, strong and patient. How could he be angry throughout every day? | 12 God is a just judge, who rebukes in anger every day. |
| 13 Unless you will be converted, he will brandish his sword. He has extended his bow and made it ready. | 13 If sinners do not repent, God sharpens his sword, strings and readies the bow, |
| 14 And with it, he has prepared instruments of death. He has produced his arrows for those on fire. | 14 Prepares his deadly shafts, makes arrows blazing thunderbolts. |
| 15 Behold him who has given birth to injustice: he has conceived sorrow and has begotten iniquity. | 15 Sinners conceive iniquity; pregnant with mischief, they give birth to failure. |
| 16 He has opened a pit and enlarged it. And he has fallen into the hole that he made. | 16 They open a hole and dig it deep, but fall into the pit they have dug. |
| 17 His sorrow will be turned upon his own head, and his iniquity will descend upon his highest point. | 17 Their mischief comes back upon themselves; their violence falls on their own heads. |
| 18 I will confess to the Lord according to his justice, and I will sing a psalm to the name of the Lord Most High. | 18 I praise the justice of the LORD; I celebrate the name of the LORD Most High. |
