A Canticle in steps. I have lifted up my eyes to you, who dwells in the heavens.1 A Song of Ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD!"
Behold, as the eyes of the servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the handmaid are on the hands of her mistress, so our eyes are upon the Lord our God, until he may be merciful to us.2 Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem!
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us. For we have been filled with utter disdain.3 Jerusalem, built as a city which is bound firmly together,
For our soul has been greatly filled. We are the disgrace of those who have abundance and the disdain of the arrogant.4 to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
There thrones for judgment were set, the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! "May they prosper who love you!
Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers!"
For my brethren and companions' sake I will say, "Peace be within you!"
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.
