1 And the Lord said to Moses: “Enter to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart, and that of his servants, so that I may accomplish these, my signs, in him,	1 Jahvè disse a Mosè: «Va’ dal Faraone. Io, infatti, ho reso inflessibile il suo cuore e il cuore dei suoi servitori per compiere in mezzo a loro questi miei segni,
2 and so that you may describe to the ears of your sons and your grandsons how often I opposed the Egyptians and wrought my signs among them, and so that you may know that I am the Lord.”	2 perché tu possa narrare a tuo figlio e a tuo nipote come io mi sia preso gioco degli Egiziani, quali segni io abbia compiuto tra di loro e così sappiate che io sono Jahvè».
3 Therefore, Moses and Aaron entered to Pharaoh, and they said to him: “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long will you be unwilling to be subject to me? Release my people to sacrifice to me.	3 Mosè e Aronne andarono dunque dal Faraone e gli riferirono: «Così dice Jahvè Dio degli Ebrei: “Fino a quando rifiuterai di umiliarti al mio cospetto? Lascia partire il mio popolo affinché mi renda un culto.
4 But if you resist, and you are unwilling to release them, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your borders.	4 Se rifiuti di lasciar partire il mio popolo, ecco, domani farò venire le cavallette sul tuo territorio.
5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, lest any part of it be seen. Yes, and what remains from the hail shall be eaten. For they will gnaw away all the trees that spring up in the fields.	5 Copriranno la faccia della terra a tal punto che la terra non si potrà più vedere. Divoreranno il resto che sfuggì alla distruzione, quanto la grandine vi ha lasciato indenne; divoreranno ogni vostro albero che cresce nei campi.
6 And they will fill your houses, and those of your servants and of all the Egyptians: so many as your fathers and ancestors have not seen, from the time that they rose up over the earth, even until this present day.” And he turned himself away, and he departed from Pharaoh.	6 Riempiranno i tuoi palazzi, le case dei tuoi servitori e di tutti gli Egiziani: ciò che non videro mai i tuoi padri né i padri dei tuoi padri dal giorno in cui sono stati sulla terra fino a oggi”». E, voltatosi, uscì dal Faraone.
7 Then the servants of Pharaoh said to him: “How long must we endure this scandal? Release the men, in order to sacrifice to the Lord their God. Do you not see that Egypt is perishing?”	7 Allora i servitori del Faraone dissero: «Fino a quando costui sarà per noi come un laccio? Lascia che questa gente se ne vada affinché possa rendere un culto a Jahvè loro Dio. Non hai ancora capito che l’Egitto va in rovina?»
8 And they called back Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh, who said to them: “Go, sacrifice to the Lord your God. Who are they who would go?”	8 Mosè e Aronne furon fatti allora tornare dal Faraone che disse loro: «Partite, rendete un culto a Jahvè vostro Dio. Ma chi sono coloro che devono partire?»
9 Moses said: “We will travel with our little ones and our elderly, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and herds. For it is a solemnity of the Lord our God.”	9 Rispose Mosè: «Partiremo con i nostri giovani e con i nostri vecchi, partiremo con i nostri figli e con le nostre figlie, con il nostro bestiame minuto e con il nostro bestiame grosso. Per noi, infatti, è una festa di Jahvè».
10 And Pharaoh responded: “So let the Lord be with you. But if I were to release you and your little ones, who would doubt that you intend some great wickedness?	10 Ma egli disse loro: «Jahvè sia con voi come io lascio partire voi e i vostri fanciulli! Vedete quanto sono cattive le vostre intenzioni!
11 It will not be so. However, go only with the men, and sacrifice to the Lord. For this, too, is what you yourselves requested.” And immediately they were cast out from the sight of Pharaoh.	11 Così no. Andate pure voi uomini a rendere un culto a Jahvè, poiché ciò è quanto state cercando». E furono: cacciati dalla presenza del Faraone.
12 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Extend your hand over the land of Egypt, toward the locusts, so that they may rise up over it, and devour every plant which remains from the hail.”	12 Jahvè disse a Mosè: «Stendi la mano sopra la terra d’Egitto per le cavallette, affinché salgano sulla terra d’Egitto, divorino tutta l’erba della terra e quanto la grandine ha risparmiato»
13 And Moses extended his staff over the land of Egypt. And the Lord brought a burning wind all that day and night. And when morning came, the burning wind lifted up the locusts.	13 Mosè stese il bastone sopra la terra di Egitto e Jahvè mandò sulla terra un vento d'oriente per tutto quel giorno e per tutta la notte. Al mattino, il vento d’oriente aveva portato le cavallette.
14 And they ascended over the entire land of Egypt. And they settled into all the parts of the Egyptians: innumerable, such as had not been before that time, nor ever would be thereafter.	14 Le cavallette salirono su tutta la terra d'Egitto e si posarono su tutto il territorio d’Egitto in grandissima quantità. Non ce ne sono state mai tante prima, né dopo ce ne saranno più così.
15 And they covered the entire face of the land, laying waste to all things. And the plants of the land were devoured, along with whatever fruits were on the trees, which the hail had left behind. And nothing at all of the greenery remained on the trees or on the plants of the earth in all of Egypt.	15 Coprirono la faccia di tutta la terra, tanto che la terra si oscurò. Divorarono tutta l’erba della terra e ogni frutto delle piante lasciato dalla grandine. Per tutta la terra d’Egitto non rimase più nulla di verde negli alberi e nell’erba della campagna.
16 For this reason, Pharaoh hurriedly called Moses and Aaron, and he said to them: “I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you.	16 Il Faraone si affrettò allora a convocare Mosè e Aronne e disse: «Ho peccato contro Jahvè vostro Dio e contro di voi.
17 But now, release me from my sin even this time, and petition the Lord your God, so that he may take this death away from me.”	17 Perdona ancora una volta il mio peccato e supplicate Jahvè vostro Dio affinché allontani da me soltanto questa morte».
18 And Moses, departing from the sight of Pharaoh, prayed to the Lord.	18 Mosè lasciò il Faraone e supplicò Jahvè.
19 And he caused a very strong wind to blow from the west, and, seizing the locusts, it cast them into the Red Sea. There remained not so much as one in all the parts of Egypt.	19 Allora, Jahvè, fece levare un fortissimo vento da occidente, che portò via le cavallette e le gettò nel Mare dei Giunchi. In tutto il territorio d’Egitto non restò una sola cavalletta.
20 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; neither did he release the sons of Israel.	20 Ma Jahvè rese ostinato il cuore del Faraone, in modo che questi non lasciò partire i figli di Israele.
21 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Extend your hand into the sky. And let there be a darkness over the land of Egypt, so dense that they may be able to feel it.”	21 Jahvè disse a Mosè: «Stendi la mano verso il cielo e tenebre vengano su tutta la terra di Egitto, tenebre che si possano palpare».
22 And Moses extended his hand into the sky. And there came a horrible darkness in the entire land of Egypt for three days.	22 Mosè stese la mano verso il cielo e tenebre fitte vennero in tutta la terra d’Egitto per tre giorni.
23 No one saw his brother, nor moved himself out of the place where he was. But wherever the sons of Israel were living, there was light.	23 Per tre giorni non si poterono vedere l’un l’altro né si mossero dal loro posto. Ma per tutti i figli di Israele vi fu luce nelle loro dimore.
24 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and he said to them: “Go, sacrifice to the Lord. Only let your sheep and herds remain behind. Your little ones may go with you.”	24 Il Faraone convocò Mosè e gli disse: «Partite, rendete un culto a Jahvè. Ma il vostro bestiame minuto e il vostro bestiame grosso deve esser lasciato qui. Anche i vostri fanciulli possono venire con voi».
25 Moses said: “You must also permit us victims and holocausts, which we may offer to the Lord our God.	25 «Tu stesso» replicò Mosè «devi mettere a nostra disposizione le vittime per i sacrifici e per gli olocausti che offriremo a Jahvè nostro Dio.
26 All the flocks shall travel with us. Not one hoof of them shall remain behind. For they are necessary for the worship of the Lord our God, especially since we do not know what ought to be immolated, until we arrive at the very place.”	26 Anche il nostro bestiame ci accompagnerà, non deve restare una sola unghia divisa: di esso, infatti, ci serviremo per rendere culto a Jahvè nostro Dio. Noi stessi non sappiamo quale culto renderemo a Jahvè finché non saremo arrivati laggiù».
27 But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he was not willing to release them.	27 Jahvè rese ostinato il cuore del Faraone, così che questi non acconsentì a lasciarli partire.
28 And Pharaoh said to Moses: “Withdraw from me, and beware that you no longer see my face. On whatever day you will appear in my sight, you shall die.”	28 Il Faraone gli disse: «Via da me! Sta’ in guardia! Non ricomparire mai più dinanzi a me. Poiché quel giorno in cui mi ricomparirai innanzi morirai».
29 Moses responded: “So be it, just as you have said. I will no longer see your face.”	29 Rispose Mosè: «Come tu hai detto! Io non ricomparirò mai più dinanzi a te».
