1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.	1 Giacobbe si stabilì nella terra dove suo padre aveva soggiornato come forestiero, nella terra di Canaan.
2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.	2 Questa è la storia della discendenza di Giacobbe. Giuseppe, all’età di diciassette anni, pascolava il bestiame minuto con i fratelli. Egli era giovinetto e, mentre si trovava con i figli di Bilba e i figli di Zilpa mogli di suo Padre riferì al padre che la fama sul loro conto era cattiva.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.	3 Ora Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio che aveva avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica con le maniche lunghe.
4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.	4 I fratelli videro che loro padre amava lui più di tutti i figli; presero a odiarlo e non potevano parlargli amichevolmente.
5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.	5 Ora Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai fratelli che lo odiarono maggiormente.
6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.	6 Disse dunque loro: «Ascoltate il sogno che ho fatto:
7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”	7 noi stavamo legando covoni in mezzo alla campagna, quand’ecco il mio covone si rizzò e poi restò diritto, ed ecco, ancora, i vostri covoni vennero tutti intorno e sì prostrarono davanti al mio covone».
8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.	8 Gli dissero i fratelli: «Che addirittura tu debba regnare su di noi o che proprio tu ci debba dominare?» E continuarono a odiarlo ancora di più a causa dei suoi sogni e delle sue parole.
9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”	9 Poi egli fece ancora un altro sogno, lo narrò al padre e ai fratelli e disse: «Ho fatto ancora un sogno. Sentite: il sole, la luna e undici stelle si prostravano innanzi a me».
10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”	10 Lo narrò dunque al padre e ai fratelli; il padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: «Che sogno hai fatto?! Che proprio si debba venire io e tua madre e i tuoi fratelli a prostrarci fino a terra innanzi a te?»
11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.	11 I fratelli furono dunque invidiosi di lui, ma il padre tenne in mente la cosa.
12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,	12 Una volta i suoi fratelli andarono a pascolare il bestiame minuto del padre a Sichem.
13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,	13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: «I tuoi fratelli, come sai, sono al pascolo a Sichem. Vieni, ti devo mandare da loro!» Giuseppe gli rispose: «Eccomi!»
14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.	14 Israele gli disse: «Va’ a vedere come stanno i tuoi fratelli e come sta il bestiame minuto; poi torna a riferirmi la cosa». Così lo fece partire dalla valle di Hebron e quegli arrivò a Sichem.
15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.	15 Lo trovò un uomo, mentre egli andava errando per la campagna e quest'uomo gli domandò: «Che cosa cerchi?»
16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”	16 Rispose: «Cerco i miei fratelli. Indicami dove si trovano a pascolare».
17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.	17 Quell’uomo disse: «Hanno levato le tende di qui, perché li ho sentiti dire: “Andiamo a Dotan!”». Allora Giuseppe andò sulle tracce dei fratelli e li trovò a Dotan.
18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.	18 Essi lo videro da lontano e, prima che fosse arrivato vicino, si accordarono astutamente per farlo morire.
19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.	19 Si dissero: «Ecco, quello dei sogni arriva!
20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”	20 Adesso, su, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in qualche cisterna! Poi diremo: “Una bestia feroce lo ha divorato!”, così vedremo che ne sarà dei suoi sogni!»
21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:	21 Ma Ruben sentì e lo volle salvare dalle loro mani; disse dunque: «Non dobbiamo togliergli la vita!»
22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.	22 Poi Ruben disse loro: «Non versate sangue, gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto ma non colpitelo: con le vostre mani», allo scopo di salvarlo dalle loro mani, per ricondurlo al padre.
23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,	23 Quando Giuseppe fu arrivato presso i suoi fratelli, essi spogliarono Giuseppe della tunica, quella tunica dalle maniche lunghe che indossava;
24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.	24 poi lo afferrarono e lo gettarono: nella cisterna; era una cisterna vuota, senza acqua.
25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.	25 Sedettero per prendere cibo; quand’ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro arrivare de Galaad una carovana di Ismaeliti con i cammelli carichi di dragante, di balsamo e di ladano, che portavano in Egitto.
26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?	26 Allora Giuda disse ai fratelli: «Che guadagno c’è a uccidere nostro fratello e a nasconderne il sangue?
27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.	27 Su, vendiamolo agli Ismaeliti e non lo colpisca la nostra mano, perché è nostro fratello e nostra carne». I fratelli lo ascoltarono.
28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.	28 Ora passarono uomini di Madian, mercanti. Allora essi tirarono su Giuseppe e lo fecero uscire dalla cisterna e per venti sicli d’argento vendettero Giuseppe agli Ismaeliti. Così condussero Giuseppe in Egitto.
29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.	29 Quando Ruben ritornò alla cisterna, ecco, Giuseppe non era più nella cisterna! Allora egli si stracciò le vesti,
30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”	30 ritornò dai fratelli e disse: «Il ragazzo non c’è più e io, dove andrò io?»
31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,	31 Presero allora la tunica di Giuseppe, scannarono un capro e intinsero la tunica nel sangue.
32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”	32 Poi mandarono al padre la tunica con le maniche lunghe e gliela fecero pervenire con queste parole: «L’abbiamo trovata: guarda se è o no la tunica di tuo figlio».
33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”	33 Egli la riconobbe e disse: «La tunica di mio figlio! Una bestia feroce lo ha divorato... Giuseppe è stato proprio sbranato!»
34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.	34 Giacobbe si stracciò le vesti, cinse le reni di sacco e fece lutto sul figlio per molti giorni.
35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,	35 Allora tutti i suoi figli e le sue figlie vennero a consolarlo, ma egli rifiutò di esser consolato e disse: «No, io voglio scendere in lutto da mio figlio nello Sheol». E il padre lo pianse.
36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.	36 Intanto i Madianiti lo vendettero in Egitto a Putifar, eunuco del Faraone e capo delle guardie.
