And so Jacob, setting out, arrived in the eastern land.1 Jacob continuó su viaje hacia la tierra de los orientales.
And he saw a well in a field, and also three flocks of sheep reclining near it. For the animals were watered from it, and its mouth was closed with a great stone.2 En el campo vio un pozo y tres rebaños de ovejas tumbadas junto a él, pues los rebaños solían abrevarse de aquel pozo. Una piedra grande tapaba la boca del pozo.
And the custom was, when all the sheep were gathered together, to roll away the stone. And when the flocks had been refreshed, they placed it over the mouth of the well again.3 Cuando se reunían allí todos los rebaños, se corría la piedra de la boca del pozo y se abrevaba el ganado; luego se volvía la piedra a su sitio sobre la boca del pozo.
And he said to the shepherds, “Brothers, where are you from?” And they answered. “From Haran.”4 Jacob dijo a los pastores: «Hermanos, ¿de dónde sois?». Respondieron: «Somos de Jarán».
And questioning them, he said, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”5 Les preguntó: «¿Conocéis a Labán, hijo de Najor?». Contestaron: «Sí».
He said, “Is he well?” “He is very well,” they said. “And behold, his daughter Rachel approaches with his flock.”6 Les dijo: «¿Qué tal está?». Respondieron: «Está bien; mira, su hija Raquel llega con el rebaño».
And Jacob said, “There is still much daylight remaining, and it is not time to return the flocks to the sheepfold. Give the sheep to drink first, and then lead them back to pasture.”7 Él dijo: «Aún es pleno día y no es hora de reunir el ganado; abrevad el rebaño y llevadlo a pastar».
They responded, “We cannot, until all the animals are gathered together and we remove the stone from the mouth of the well, so that we may water the flocks.”8 Contestaron: «No podemos hasta que se reúnan todos los rebaños y se corra la piedra de la boca del pozo; entonces abrevaremos el rebaño».
They were still speaking, and behold, Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep; for she pastured the flock.9 Todavía estaba él hablando con ellos, cuando llegó Raquel con el rebaño de su padre, pues era pastora.
When Jacob had seen her, and he realized that she was his maternal first cousin, and that these were the sheep of his uncle Laban, he removed the stone which closed the well.10 Apenas vio Jacob a Raquel, hija de Labán, hermano de su madre, con el rebaño de su tío Labán, se acercó, corrió la piedra de la boca del pozo y abrevó el rebaño de su tío Labán.
And having watered the flock, he kissed her. And lifting up his voice, he wept.11 Después Jacob besó a Raquel y se echó a llorar.
And he revealed to her that he was a brother of her father, and the son of Rebekah. And so, hurrying, she announced it to her father.12 Jacob explicó a Raquel que era pariente de su padre e hijo de Rebeca. Ella corrió a contárselo a su padre.
And when he had heard that Jacob, his sister’s son, had arrived, he ran to meet him. And embracing him, and kissing him heartily, he brought him into his house. But when he had heard the reasons for his journey,13 Cuando Labán oyó las noticias acerca de Jacob, hijo de su hermana, salió corriendo a su encuentro, lo abrazó, lo besó y lo llevó a su casa; y él contó a Labán todo lo sucedido.
he responded, “You are my bone and my flesh.” And after the days of one month were completed,14 Labán le dijo: «Tú eres realmente de mi hueso y carne». Y se quedó con él un mes.
he said to him: “Though you are my brother, will you serve me for nothing? Tell me what wages you would accept.”15 Labán dijo a Jacob: «¿Acaso por ser pariente mío me vas a servir de balde? Dime qué salario quieres».
In truth, he had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah; and truly the younger was called Rachel.16 Labán tenía dos hijas: la mayor se llamaba Lía y la menor se llamaba Raquel.
But while Leah was bleary-eyed, Rachel had an elegant appearance and was attractive to behold.17 Lía tenía ojos apagados; Raquel era de buen tipo y bello semblante.
And Jacob, loving her, said, “I will serve you for seven years, for your younger daughter Rachel.”18 Jacob, que se había enamorado de Raquel, le dijo: «Te serviré siete años por Raquel, tu hija menor».
Laban responded, “It is better that I give her to you than to another man; remain with me.”19 Labán respondió: «Mejor es dártela a ti que dársela a un extraño. Quédate conmigo».
Therefore, Jacob served for seven years for Rachel. And these seemed like only a few days, because of the greatness of love.20 Jacob sirvió por Raquel siete años, que le parecieron unos pocos días, de lo enamorado que estaba.
And he said to Laban, “Give my wife to me. For now the time has been fulfilled, so that I may go in to her.”21 Jacob dijo a Labán: «Se ha cumplido el plazo; dame mi mujer para que cohabite con ella».
And he, having called a great crowd of his friends to the feast, agreed to the marriage.22 Labán reunió a todos los hombres del lugar y les ofreció un banquete.
And at night, he brought in his daughter Leah to him,23 Por la noche tomó a su hija Lía y se la llevó a Jacob, que se acostó con ella.
giving his daughter a handmaid named Zilpah. After Jacob had gone in to her, according to custom, when morning had arrived, he saw Leah.24 Además, Labán designó a su criada Zilpa como criada de su hija Lía.
And he said to his father-in-law, “What is it that you intended to do? Did I not serve you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?”25 A la mañana Jacob vio que era Lía, y dijo a Labán: «¿Qué me has hecho? ¿No te he servido por Raquel? ¿Por qué me has engañado?».
Laban responded, “It is not the practice in this place to give the younger in marriage first.26 Labán replicó: «No es costumbre en este lugar dar la menor antes que la mayor.
Complete a week of days with this mating. And then I will give this one to you also, for the service that you will provide to me for another seven years.”27 Completa la semana nupcial de esta y te daré también la otra, a cambio de que me sirvas otros siete años».
He agreed to his pleading. And after the week had passed, he took Rachel as a wife.28 Jacob aceptó y, cumplida la semana de esta, Labán le dio por mujer a su hija Raquel.
To her, the father had given Bilhah as her servant.29 Además, Labán designó a su criada Bilá como criada de su hija Raquel.
And, having at last obtained the marriage he desired, he preferred the love of the latter before the former, and he served with him another seven years.30 Él cohabitó también con Raquel y amó a Raquel más que a Lía; y se quedó a su servicio otros siete años.
But the Lord, seeing that he despised Leah, opened her womb, but her sister remained barren.31 El Señor vio que Lía era menospreciada y la hizo fecunda, mientras Raquel seguía estéril.
Having conceived, she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, saying: “The Lord saw my humiliation; now my husband will love me.”32 Lía concibió, dio a luz un hijo y lo llamó Rubén, pues dijo: «El Señor ha visto mi aflicción; ahora me amará mi marido».
And again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, “Because the Lord heard that I was treated with contempt, he has also given this one to me.” And she called his name Simeon.33 Concibió de nuevo y dio a luz un hijo, y dijo: «El Señor ha oído que era menospreciada y me ha dado este también». Y lo llamó Simeón.
And she conceived a third time, and she gave birth to another son, and she said: “Now likewise my husband will unite with me, because I have borne him three sons.” And because of this, she called his name Levi.34 Volvió a concebir, dio a luz un hijo y dijo: «Ahora sí me cobrará afecto mi marido, pues le he dado tres hijos». Y lo llamó Leví.
A fourth time she conceived and bore a son, and she said, “Only now will I confess to the Lord.” And for this reason, she called him Judah. And she ceased from child-bearing.35 Concibió de nuevo, dio a luz un hijo y dijo: «Esta vez alabaré al Señor». Por eso lo llamó Judá. Y dejó de tener hijos.
