1 And so Jacob, setting out, arrived in the eastern land.	1 Jakob machte sich auf und zog weiter ins Land der Söhne des Ostens.
2 And he saw a well in a field, and also three flocks of sheep reclining near it. For the animals were watered from it, and its mouth was closed with a great stone.	2 Eines Tages sah er einen Brunnen auf freiem Feld. Dort lagerten drei Herden von Schafen und Ziegen; denn aus dem Brunnen tränkte man die Herden. Ein großer Stein lag über der Brunnenöffnung.
3 And the custom was, when all the sheep were gathered together, to roll away the stone. And when the flocks had been refreshed, they placed it over the mouth of the well again.	3 Wenn sich dort alle Herden eingefunden hatten, schob man den Stein von der Brunnenöffnung und tränkte das Vieh. Dann schob man den Stein wieder zurück an seinen Platz über der Brunnenöffnung.
4 And he said to the shepherds, “Brothers, where are you from?” And they answered. “From Haran.”	4 Jakob fragte die Leute dort: Meine Brüder, woher seid ihr? Aus Haran, antworteten sie.
5 And questioning them, he said, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”	5 Da sagte er zu ihnen: Kennt ihr Laban, den Sohn Nahors? Ja, wir kennen ihn, antworteten sie.
6 He said, “Is he well?” “He is very well,” they said. “And behold, his daughter Rachel approaches with his flock.”	6 Weiter fragte er sie: Geht es ihm gut? Sie entgegneten: Ja, es geht ihm gut. Aber da kommt gerade seine Tochter Rahel mit der Herde.
7 And Jacob said, “There is still much daylight remaining, and it is not time to return the flocks to the sheepfold. Give the sheep to drink first, and then lead them back to pasture.”	7 Da sagte er: Es ist noch mitten am Tag und nicht die Zeit, das Vieh zusammenzutreiben. Tränkt doch die Tiere, dann geht und weidet weiter!
8 They responded, “We cannot, until all the animals are gathered together and we remove the stone from the mouth of the well, so that we may water the flocks.”	8 Da sagten sie: Das können wir nicht, bevor nicht alle Herden sich eingefunden haben. Erst dann kann man den Stein von der Brunnenöffnung wegschieben und die Tiere tränken.
9 They were still speaking, and behold, Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep; for she pastured the flock.	9 Während er sich noch mit ihnen unterhielt, war Rahel mit der Herde, die ihrem Vater gehörte, eingetroffen; denn sie war Hirtin.
10 When Jacob had seen her, and he realized that she was his maternal first cousin, and that these were the sheep of his uncle Laban, he removed the stone which closed the well.	10 Als Jakob Rahel, die Tochter Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter, und dessen Herde sah, trat er hinzu, schob den Stein von der Brunnenöffnung und tränkte das Vieh Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter.
11 And having watered the flock, he kissed her. And lifting up his voice, he wept.	11 Dann küsste er Rahel und begann laut zu weinen.
12 And he revealed to her that he was a brother of her father, and the son of Rebekah. And so, hurrying, she announced it to her father.	12 Jakob sagte zu Rahel, dass er ein Bruder ihres Vaters und der Sohn Rebekkas sei. Da lief sie weg und erzählte es ihrem Vater.
13 And when he had heard that Jacob, his sister’s son, had arrived, he ran to meet him. And embracing him, and kissing him heartily, he brought him into his house. But when he had heard the reasons for his journey,	13 Als Laban von Jakob, dem Sohn seiner Schwester, hörte, lief er ihm entgegen; er umarmte und küsste ihn und führte ihn in sein Haus. Jakob erzählte Laban die ganze Geschichte.
14 he responded, “You are my bone and my flesh.” And after the days of one month were completed,	14 Da erwiderte ihm Laban: Du bist wirklich mein Bein und mein Fleisch. Als Jakob etwa einen Monat bei ihm geblieben war,
15 he said to him: “Though you are my brother, will you serve me for nothing? Tell me what wages you would accept.”	15 sagte Laban zu ihm: Sollst du mir umsonst dienen, weil du mein Bruder bist? Sag mir, welchen Lohn du haben willst.
16 In truth, he had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah; and truly the younger was called Rachel.	16 Laban hatte zwei Töchter; die ältere hieß Lea, die jüngere Rahel.
17 But while Leah was bleary-eyed, Rachel had an elegant appearance and was attractive to behold.	17 Die Augen Leas waren matt, Rahel aber war schön von Gestalt und hatte ein schönes Gesicht.
18 And Jacob, loving her, said, “I will serve you for seven years, for your younger daughter Rachel.”	18 Jakob hatte Rahel lieb und so sagte er: Ich will dir um die jüngere Tochter Rahel sieben Jahre dienen.
19 Laban responded, “It is better that I give her to you than to another man; remain with me.”	19 Laban entgegnete: Es ist besser, ich gebe sie dir als einem anderen. Bleib bei mir!
20 Therefore, Jacob served for seven years for Rachel. And these seemed like only a few days, because of the greatness of love.	20 Jakob diente also um Rahel sieben Jahre. Weil er sie liebte, kamen sie ihm wie wenige Tage vor.
21 And he said to Laban, “Give my wife to me. For now the time has been fulfilled, so that I may go in to her.”	21 Dann aber sagte er zu Laban: Gib mir jetzt meine Frau; denn meine Zeit ist um und ich will nun zu ihr gehen.
22 And he, having called a great crowd of his friends to the feast, agreed to the marriage.	22 Da ließ Laban alle Männer des Ortes zusammenkommen und veranstaltete ein Festmahl.
23 And at night, he brought in his daughter Leah to him,	23 Am Abend nahm er aber seine Tochter Lea, führte sie zu ihm und Jakob wohnte ihr bei.
24 giving his daughter a handmaid named Zilpah. After Jacob had gone in to her, according to custom, when morning had arrived, he saw Leah.	24 Laban gab seine Magd Silpa seiner Tochter Lea zur Magd.
25 And he said to his father-in-law, “What is it that you intended to do? Did I not serve you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?”	25 Am Morgen stellte sich heraus: Es war Lea. Da sagte Jakob zu Laban: Was hast du mir angetan? Habe ich dir denn nicht um Rahel gedient? Warum hast du mich hintergangen?
26 Laban responded, “It is not the practice in this place to give the younger in marriage first.	26 Laban erwiderte: Es ist hierzulande nicht üblich, die Jüngere vor der Älteren zur Ehe zu geben.
27 Complete a week of days with this mating. And then I will give this one to you also, for the service that you will provide to me for another seven years.”	27 Verbring mit dieser noch die Brautwoche, dann soll dir auch die andere gehören um weitere sieben Jahre Dienst.
28 He agreed to his pleading. And after the week had passed, he took Rachel as a wife.	28 Jakob ging darauf ein. Er verbrachte mit Lea die Brautwoche, dann gab ihm Laban seine Tochter Rahel zur Frau.
29 To her, the father had given Bilhah as her servant.	29 Laban gab seine Magd Bilha seiner Tochter Rahel zur Magd.
30 And, having at last obtained the marriage he desired, he preferred the love of the latter before the former, and he served with him another seven years.	30 Jakob wohnte Rahel ebenfalls bei und er liebte Rahel mehr als Lea. Er blieb noch weitere sieben Jahre bei Laban im Dienst.
31 But the Lord, seeing that he despised Leah, opened her womb, but her sister remained barren.	31 Als der Herr sah, dass Lea zurückgesetzt wurde, öffnete er ihren Mutterschoß, Rahel aber blieb unfruchtbar.
32 Having conceived, she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, saying: “The Lord saw my humiliation; now my husband will love me.”	32 Lea wurde schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Sie nannte ihn Ruben (Seht, ein Sohn!); denn sie sagte: Der Herr hat mein Elend gesehen. Jetzt wird mein Mann mich lieben.
33 And again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, “Because the Lord heard that I was treated with contempt, he has also given this one to me.” And she called his name Simeon.	33 Sie wurde abermals schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Da sagte sie: Der Herr hat gehört, dass ich zurückgesetzt bin, und hat mir auch noch diesen geschenkt. Sie nannte ihn Simeon (Hörer).
34 And she conceived a third time, and she gave birth to another son, and she said: “Now likewise my husband will unite with me, because I have borne him three sons.” And because of this, she called his name Levi.	34 Sie wurde noch einmal schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Da sagte sie: Jetzt endlich wird mein Mann an mir hängen, denn ich habe ihm drei Söhne geboren. Darum nannte sie ihn Levi (Anhang).
35 A fourth time she conceived and bore a son, and she said, “Only now will I confess to the Lord.” And for this reason, she called him Judah. And she ceased from child-bearing.	35 Abermals wurde sie schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Da sagte sie: Diesmal will ich dem Herrn danken. Darum nannte sie ihn Juda (Dank). Dann bekam sie keine Kinder mehr.
