2 The Philistines drew up their battle-line against Israel, the fighting was fierce, and Israel was beaten bythe Philistines: about four thousand men in their ranks were kil ed on the field of battle.	2 schierarono l'esercito in faccia a Israele. Appiccatasi poi la battaglia, Israele voltò le spalle ai Filistei che, in quel conflitto, trucidarono qua e là per i campi circa quattro mila uomini.
3 When the troops returned to camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has Yahweh caused us to be beatenby the Philistines today? Let us fetch the ark of our God from Shiloh so that, when it goes with us, it may save usfrom the clutches of our enemies.'	3 Il popolo tornò nel campo, e gli anziani d'Israele dissero: « Peichè il Signore ci ha oggi percossi davanti ai Filistei? Portiamo tra noi, da Silo, l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore, facciamola venire in mezzo a noi, affinchè ci salvi dalla mano dei nostri nemici ».
4 So the troops sent to Shiloh and brought away the ark of Yahweh Sabaoth enthroned on the wingedcreatures; the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, came with the ark.	4 Il popolo mandò adunque in Silo, e di là fu portata l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore degli eserciti, che siede sopra i Cherubini; e i due figli d'Eli, Ofni e Finees, seguiròn l'arca dell'alleanza di Dio.
5 When the ark of Yahweh arrived in the camp, al Israel raised a great war cry so that the earthresounded.	5 Or quando l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore arrivò nel campo, tutto Israele emise un gran grido che fece rimbombar la terra.
6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the war cry, they said, 'What can this great war cry in theHebrew camp mean?' And they realised that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.	6 Appena i Filistei sentirono le alte grida, esclamarono: « Che è mai questo rumore di grandi grida nel campo degli Ebrei? » E saputo che era giunta nel campo l'arca del Signore,
7 At this, the Philistines were afraid; for they said, 'God has come into the camp. Disaster!' they said. 'Fornothing like this has ever happened before.	7 s'impaurirono ed esclamarono: « Dio è venuto'nel campo! » E dicevan, mandando gemiti:
8 Disaster! Who will rescue us from the clutches of this mighty God? This was the God who struck downEgypt with every kind of misfortune in the desert.	8 « Guai a noi! Non vi fu tanta allegrezza ieri e ier l'altro: guai a noi! Chi ci salverà dalle mani di questi dèi sublimi? Questi son gli dèi che nel deserto percossero l'Egitto con ogni sorta di piaghe.
9 But take courage and be men, Philistines, or you wil become slaves to the Hebrews as they have beenslaves to you. Be men and fight.'	9 Fatevi animo, o Filistei, e siate uomini, per non servire agli Ebrei, come essi hanno servito a voi: fatevi animo e combattete ».
10 So the Philistines gave battle and Israel was defeated, each man fleeing to his tent. The slaughter wasvery great: on the Israelite side, thirty thousand foot soldiers fel .	10 I Filistei adunque attaccarono battaglia, e Israele fu sconfitto in modo che ciascuno fuggi alla sua tenda, e la rotta fu tanto grande che trenta mila pedoni d'Israele perirono,
11 The ark of God was captured too, and Hophni and Phinehas the two sons of Eli died.	11 e fu presa l'arca di Dio, e morirono anche i due figli d'Eli, Ofni e Finees.
12 A Benjaminite ran from the battle-line and reached Shiloh the same day, his clothes torn and dust onhis head.	12 Nello stesso giorno, un uomo di Beniamino, fuggito dalla battaglia, arrivò a. Silo, colla veste stracciata e la testa coperta di polvere.
13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat beside the gate watching the road, for his heart wastrembling for the ark of God. The man came into the town and told the news, whereupon cries of anguish fil edthe town.	13 Eli, quando egli giunse, stava seduto sulla sua sedia, cogli occhi verso la strada, perchè il suo cuore tremava per l'arca di Dio. 14 Eli heard the sound and asked, 'What does this uproar mean?' The man hurried on and told Eli.	14 Ed Eli, sentendo il clamore delle grida, disse: « Che cos'è questo rumore di tumulto? » Allora quell'uomo, affrettatosi, venne ad Eli e gli diede la nuova.
15 Eli was ninety-eight years old; his gaze was fixed; he was blind.	15 Eli aveva novant'otto anni; i suoi occhi erano ottenebrati e non potevano vedere.
16 The man said to Eli, 'I have come from the camp. I escaped from the battle-line today.' 'My son,' saidEli, 'what happened?'	16 Quell'uomo disse"dunque ad Eli: « Son io che vengo dalla battaglia, io che oggi sono fuggito dal campo ». Eli gli disse: « E che è avvenuto, figlio mio? »
17 The messenger replied, 'Israel has fled before the Philistines; the army has been utterly routed. Whatis worse, your two sons are dead and the ark of God has been captured.'	17 E quell'uomo che portava la nuova rispose: « Israele è fuggito davanti ai Filistei; è stata fatta una grande strage del popolo, e per di più anche i tuoi figli Ofni e Finees son morti, e l'arca di Dio è stata presa ».
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his seat by the gate and broke his neck anddied, for he was old and heavy. He had been judge of Israel for forty years.	18 Appena egli ebbe nominata l'arca di Dio, Eli cadde dalla sua sedia all'indietro, vicino alla porta, e, rottosi il collo, morì: egli era vecchio decrepito, ed aveva giudicato Israele per quarantanni.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near her time. When she heard thenews that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead she croucheddown and gave birth, for her labour pains had come on.	19 E la sua nuora, moglie di Finees, che era gravida e vicina al parto, sentito che l'arca di Dio era stata presa, che il suo suocero e il suo marito erari morti, si piegò e partorì, sopraffatta ad un tratto dai dolori.
20 When she was at the point of death, the women at her side said, 'Do not be afraid; you have givenbirth to a son.' But she did not answer and took no notice.	20 Nel momento in cui essa moriva, quelle che le stavano d'intorno le dissero: « Non temere: hai dato alla luce un figlio maschio ». Ma essa non diede loro risposta, nè vi fece attenzione.
21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, 'The glory has gone from Israel,' al uding to the capture of theark of God and to her father-in-law and husband.	21 E chiamò il bambino Icabod, dicendo: « La gloria è stata portata via da Israele! » A causa della perdita dell'arca di Dio, del suo socero e del suo marito,
