1 and, for al Israel, the word of Samuel was as the word of Yahweh; since Eli was very old and his sonspersisted in their wicked behaviour towards Yahweh. It happened at that time that the Philistines mustered tomake war on Israel and Israel went out to meet them in war, pitching camp near Ebenezer while the Philistinespitched camp at Aphek.	1 Y la palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Elí era muy anciano, mientras que sus hijos persistían en su malvada conducta respecto de Yahveh. Ocurrió en aquel tiempo que los filisteos se reunieron para combatir a Israel, y los israelitas salieron a su encuentro para el combate. Acamparon cerca de Eben Haézer, mientras que los filisteos habían acampado en Afeq.
2 The Philistines drew up their battle-line against Israel, the fighting was fierce, and Israel was beaten bythe Philistines: about four thousand men in their ranks were kil ed on the field of battle.	2 Se pusieron los filisteos en orden de batalla contra Israel; se libró un gran combate y fue batido Israel por los filisteos, muriendo en las filas, en campo abierto, cerca de 4.000 hombres.
3 When the troops returned to camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has Yahweh caused us to be beatenby the Philistines today? Let us fetch the ark of our God from Shiloh so that, when it goes with us, it may save usfrom the clutches of our enemies.'	3 Volvió el ejército al campamento, y los ancianos de Israel dijeron: «¿Por qué nos ha derrotado hoy Yahveh delante de los filisteos? Vamos a buscar en Silo el arca de nuestro Dios; que venga en medio de nosotros y que nos salve del poder de nuestros enemigos».
4 So the troops sent to Shiloh and brought away the ark of Yahweh Sabaoth enthroned on the wingedcreatures; the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, came with the ark.	4 El pueblo envió a Silo y sacaron de allí el arca de Yahveh Sebaot que está sobre los querubines; acompañaron al arca Jofní y Pinjás, los dos hijos de Elí.
5 When the ark of Yahweh arrived in the camp, al Israel raised a great war cry so that the earthresounded.	5 Cuando el arca de Yahveh llegó al campamento, todos los israelitas lanzaron un gran clamor que hizo retumbar las tierras.
6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the war cry, they said, 'What can this great war cry in theHebrew camp mean?' And they realised that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.	6 Los filisteos oyeron el estruendo del clamoreo y dijeron: «¿Qué significa este gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos?» Y se enteraron de que el arca de Yahveh había llegado al campamento.
7 At this, the Philistines were afraid; for they said, 'God has come into the camp. Disaster!' they said. 'Fornothing like this has ever happened before.	7 Temieron entonces los filisteos, porque se decían: «Dios ha venido al campamento». Y exclamaron: «¡Ay de nosotros! Nunca había sucedido tal cosa.
8 Disaster! Who will rescue us from the clutches of this mighty God? This was the God who struck downEgypt with every kind of misfortune in the desert.	8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? ¡Estos son los dioses que castigaron a Egipto con toda clase de plagas en el desierto!
9 But take courage and be men, Philistines, or you wil become slaves to the Hebrews as they have beenslaves to you. Be men and fight.'	9 ¡Cobrad ánimo y sed hombres, filisteos, para no tener que servir a los hebreos como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres y pelead!»
10 So the Philistines gave battle and Israel was defeated, each man fleeing to his tent. The slaughter wasvery great: on the Israelite side, thirty thousand foot soldiers fel .	10 Trabaron batalla los filisteos. Israel fue batido y cada cual huyó a sus tiendas; la mortandad fue muy grande, cayendo de Israel 30.000 infantes.
11 The ark of God was captured too, and Hophni and Phinehas the two sons of Eli died.	11 El arca de Dios fue capturada y murieron Jofní y Pinjás, los dos hijos de Elí.
12 A Benjaminite ran from the battle-line and reached Shiloh the same day, his clothes torn and dust onhis head.	12 Un hombre de Benjamín salió corriendo del campo de batalla y llegó a Silo aquel mismo día, con los vestidos rotos y la cabeza cubierta de polvo.
13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat beside the gate watching the road, for his heart wastrembling for the ark of God. The man came into the town and told the news, whereupon cries of anguish fil edthe town.	13 Cuando llegó, estaba Elí en su asiento, a la puerta, atento al camino, porque su corazón temblaba por el arca de Dios. Vino, pues, este hombre a traer la noticia a la ciudad, y toda la ciudad comenzó a gritar.
14 Eli heard the sound and asked, 'What does this uproar mean?' The man hurried on and told Eli.	14 Oyó Elí los gritos y preguntó: «¿Qué tumulto es éste?» Diose prisa el hombre y se lo anunció a Elí.
15 Eli was ninety-eight years old; his gaze was fixed; he was blind.	15 Contaba éste 98 años, tenía las pupilas inmóviles y no podía ver.
16 The man said to Eli, 'I have come from the camp. I escaped from the battle-line today.' 'My son,' saidEli, 'what happened?'	16 El hombre dijo a Elí: «Vengo del campo de batalla, he huido hoy del campo». Elí preguntó: ¿Qué ha pasado, hijo mío?»
17 The messenger replied, 'Israel has fled before the Philistines; the army has been utterly routed. Whatis worse, your two sons are dead and the ark of God has been captured.'	17 El mensajero respondió: «Israel ha huido ante los filisteos. Además el ejército ha sufrido una gran derrota, también han muerto tus dos hijos y hasta el arca de Dios ha sido capturada».
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his seat by the gate and broke his neck anddied, for he was old and heavy. He had been judge of Israel for forty years.	18 A la mención del arca de Dios, cayó Elí de su asiento, hacia atrás, en medio de la puerta, se rompió la nuca y murió, pues era anciano y estaba ya torpe. Había sido juez en Israel durante cuarenta años.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near her time. When she heard thenews that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead she croucheddown and gave birth, for her labour pains had come on.	19 Su nuera, la mujer de Pinjás, estaba encinta y para dar a luz. Cuando oyó la noticia de que el arca de Dios había sido capturada y la muerte de su suegro y su marido, se encogió y dio a luz, pues la habían acometido sus dolores.
20 When she was at the point of death, the women at her side said, 'Do not be afraid; you have givenbirth to a son.' But she did not answer and took no notice.	20 Estando a la muerte, las que la asistían le dijeron: «Animo, que es un niño lo que has dado a luz», pero ella no respondió ni prestó atención.
21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, 'The glory has gone from Israel,' al uding to the capture of theark of God and to her father-in-law and husband.	21 Llamó al niño Ikabod, diciendo: «La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel», aludiendo a la captura del arca de Dios, a su suegro y a su marido.
22 She said, 'The glory has gone from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.'	22 Y dijo: «La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido capturada».
