1 and, for al Israel, the word of Samuel was as the word of Yahweh; since Eli was very old and his sonspersisted in their wicked behaviour towards Yahweh. It happened at that time that the Philistines mustered tomake war on Israel and Israel went out to meet them in war, pitching camp near Ebenezer while the Philistinespitched camp at Aphek.	1 Or il arriva en ces jours-là, que les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour combattre Israël et les Israélites sortirent à leur rencontre pour la bataille. Ils campaient près d’Ében-Ha-Ézer, tandis que les Philistins campaient à Afek.
2 The Philistines drew up their battle-line against Israel, the fighting was fierce, and Israel was beaten bythe Philistines: about four thousand men in their ranks were kil ed on the field of battle.	2 Les Philistins se rangèrent en bataille face à Israël et le combat fut violent. Israël fut battu par les Philistins qui tuèrent environ 4 000 hommes dans leurs rangs en rase campagne.
3 When the troops returned to camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has Yahweh caused us to be beatenby the Philistines today? Let us fetch the ark of our God from Shiloh so that, when it goes with us, it may save usfrom the clutches of our enemies.'	3 Lorsque le peuple regagna le camp, les anciens d’Israël se demandèrent: “Pourquoi Yahvé nous a-t-il écrasés aujourd’hui devant les Philistins? Allons à Silo, ramenons l’Arche de l’Alliance! Qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous et qu’elle nous sauve de la main de nos ennemis.”
4 So the troops sent to Shiloh and brought away the ark of Yahweh Sabaoth enthroned on the wingedcreatures; the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, came with the ark.	4 Le peuple envoya donc chercher à Silo l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé des armées, qui siège sur les chérubins. Les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, l’accompagnaient.
5 When the ark of Yahweh arrived in the camp, al Israel raised a great war cry so that the earthresounded.	5 Lorsque l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé entra dans le camp, tout Israël poussa des cris à faire trembler le sol.
6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the war cry, they said, 'What can this great war cry in theHebrew camp mean?' And they realised that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.	6 En entendant ces cris, les Philistins se dirent: “Que signifie cette grande acclamation dans le camp des Hébreux?” Quand ils apprirent que l’Arche de Yahvé était arrivée au camp,
7 At this, the Philistines were afraid; for they said, 'God has come into the camp. Disaster!' they said. 'Fornothing like this has ever happened before.	7 les Philistins eurent peur: “Dieu est arrivé dans leur camp, dirent-ils, malheur à nous, car jusqu’ici rien de pareil n’était arrivé.
8 Disaster! Who will rescue us from the clutches of this mighty God? This was the God who struck downEgypt with every kind of misfortune in the desert.	8 Malheur à nous! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces dieux puissants? Ce sont eux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toutes sortes de plaies lorsqu’ils étaient au désert.
9 But take courage and be men, Philistines, or you wil become slaves to the Hebrews as they have beenslaves to you. Be men and fight.'	9 Courage, Philistins! Luttons comme des hommes, n’allons pas nous soumettre à ces Hébreux comme ils nous ont été soumis jusqu’à ce jour. Soyons courageux et luttons!”
10 So the Philistines gave battle and Israel was defeated, each man fleeing to his tent. The slaughter wasvery great: on the Israelite side, thirty thousand foot soldiers fel .	10 Les Philistins livrèrent bataille; les Israélites furent écrasés et chacun s’enfuit chez lui. Ce fut une très grande défaite: 30 000 fantassins tombèrent dans les rangs d’Israël.
11 The ark of God was captured too, and Hophni and Phinehas the two sons of Eli died.	11 L’Arche de Dieu fut prise et les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, moururent.
12 A Benjaminite ran from the battle-line and reached Shiloh the same day, his clothes torn and dust onhis head.	12 Un homme de Benjamin s’échappa des lignes et arriva le jour même à Silo, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de poussière.
13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat beside the gate watching the road, for his heart wastrembling for the ark of God. The man came into the town and told the news, whereupon cries of anguish fil edthe town.	13 Lorsqu’il arriva, Héli était assis sur son siège à côté de la porte, il guettait la route car son cœur tremblait pour l’Arche de Dieu. L’homme arriva donc à la ville portant la nouvelle et, de la ville, s’éleva une grande lamentation.
14 Eli heard the sound and asked, 'What does this uproar mean?' The man hurried on and told Eli.	14 Quand Héli l’entendit, il demanda: “Pourquoi une telle lamentation?” L’homme courut vers Héli pour l’avertir:
15 Eli was ninety-eight years old; his gaze was fixed; he was blind.	15 il avait alors 98 ans, son regard était fixe et il ne voyait plus.
16 The man said to Eli, 'I have come from the camp. I escaped from the battle-line today.' 'My son,' saidEli, 'what happened?'	16 Le messager dit à Héli: “J’arrive du camp, je me suis enfui des lignes aujourd’hui même.” Héli demanda: “Que s’est-il passé, mon fils?”
17 The messenger replied, 'Israel has fled before the Philistines; the army has been utterly routed. Whatis worse, your two sons are dead and the ark of God has been captured.'	17 Le messager répondit: “Israël a fui devant les Philistins, c’est une terrible défaite pour le peuple. Tes deux fils aussi sont morts et l’Arche de Dieu a été prise.”
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his seat by the gate and broke his neck anddied, for he was old and heavy. He had been judge of Israel for forty years.	18 À peine eut-il mentionné l’Arche de Dieu, qu’Héli tomba de son siège à la renverse, en travers de la porte. Il se brisa la nuque et il mourut, car le vieillard était lourd. Il avait jugé Israël pendant quarante ans.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and near her time. When she heard thenews that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead she croucheddown and gave birth, for her labour pains had come on.	19 Sa belle-fille, la femme de Pinhas, était enceinte et sur le point d’accoucher. En apprenant la prise de l’Arche de Dieu, la mort de son beau-père et celle de son mari, elle fut prise de douleurs, elle s’accroupit et accoucha.
20 When she was at the point of death, the women at her side said, 'Do not be afraid; you have givenbirth to a son.' But she did not answer and took no notice.	20 Les femmes qui l’assistaient virent qu’elle était sur le point de mourir; elles lui dirent: “Courage! Courage! C’est un fils que tu as enfanté.” Mais elle ne répondit rien et n’y prêta aucune attention.
21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, 'The glory has gone from Israel,' al uding to the capture of theark of God and to her father-in-law and husband.	21 Elle appela l’enfant Ikabod car, dit-elle: “La Gloire a été retranchée d’Israël.” Elle pensait à la fois à la prise de l’Arche, à son beau-père et à son mari.
22 She said, 'The glory has gone from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.'	22 Et elle déclara: “La Gloire a été retranchée d’Israël puisque l’Arche de Dieu a été enlevée.”
