1 It then happened that the Philistines mustered their forces for war, to fight Israel, and Achish said toDavid, 'It is understood that you and your men go into battle with me.'	1 - Ora accadde che in quei giorni i Filistei raccolsero le loro schiere per prepararsi ad una guerra contro Israele. Disse pertanto Achis a Davide: «Sappi per certo che verrai meco in campo tu e la tua gente».
2 David said to Achish, 'In that case, you wil soon see what your servant can do.' Achish replied toDavid, 'Right, I shal appoint you as my permanent bodyguard.'	2 Davide rispose ad Achis: «Ed ora tu saprai ciò che sarà per fare il tuo servo». Disse Achis a Davide: «Ed io ti costituirò stabilmente guardia della mia persona».
3 Now Samuel was dead, and al Israel had mourned him and buried him at Ramah, his own town. Saulhad expel ed the necromancers and wizards from the country.	3 Ora Samuele era morto e tutto Israele lo aveva pianto e l'avevano sepolto nella sua città di Ramata. E Saul aveva rimosso dal paese i maghi e gli indovini.
4 Meanwhile the Philistines had mustered and had come and pitched camp at Shunem. Saul musteredal Israel and they encamped at Gilboa.	4 Riunitisi adunque i Filistei se ne vennero ad accamparsi in Sunam, mentre Saul, raccolto tutto Israele, se ne venne in Gelboe.
5 When Saul saw the Philistine camp, he was afraid and his heart trembled violently.	5 Saul vide la schiera dei Filistei e si sgomentò e trepidando assai in cuor suo,
6 Saul consulted Yahweh, but Yahweh gave him no answer, either by dream, divination or prophet.	6 consultò il Signore, che non rispose nè mediante sogni, nè per mezzo dei sacerdoti o dei profeti.
7 Saul then said to his servants, 'Find a necromancer for me, so that I can go and consult her.' Hisservants replied, 'There is a necromancer at En-Dor.'	7 Disse allora Saul ai suoi servi: «Cercatemi una donna che possegga lo spirito di Pitone e andrò da lei ad interrogarla». I suoi servi gli risposero: «Vi è in Endor una donna pitonessa».
8 And so Saul, disguising himself and changing his clothes, set out accompanied by two men; their visitto the woman took place at night. 'Disclose the future to me', he said, 'by means of a ghost. Conjure up the one Ishall name to you.'	8 Deposto il suo abito e indossate altre vesti, andò accompagnato da due uomini, e giunti di notte a casa della donna le disse: «Dimmi l'avvenire mediante lo spirito pitonico e fammi apparire quello che io ti dico».
9 The woman replied, 'Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has outlawed necromancers andwizards from the country; why are you setting a trap for my life, then, to have me killed?'	9 La donna gli disse: «Tu sai ciò che fece Saul e come abbia sradicato i maghi e gli indovini da questo paese. Perchè tendere insidie alla mia vita per farmi uccidere?».
10 But Saul swore to her by Yahweh, 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'no blame shal attach to you for thisbusiness.'	10 Ma Saul le giurò nel nome del Signore, dicendo: «Viva il Signore! Per tal fatto non ti avverrà male alcuno».
11 The woman asked, 'Whom shal I conjure up for you?' He replied, 'Conjure up Samuel.'	11 Domandò la donna: «E chi ti evocherò?». Ed egli: «Evocami Samuele».
12 The woman then saw Samuel and, giving a great cry, she said to Saul, 'Why have you deceived me?You are Saul!'	12 Al vedere Samuele la donna mandò un gran grido e disse a Saul: «Perchè mi hai ingannata? Tu sei Saul».
13 The king said, 'Do not be afraid! What do you see?' The woman replied to Saul, 'I see a ghost risingfrom the earth.'	13 Ma il re le disse: «Non temere; che hai visto?». La donna disse a Saul: «Ho veduto un dio ascendere dalla terra»;
14 'What is he like?' he asked. She replied, 'It is an old man coming up; he is wrapped in a cloak.' Saulthen knew that it was Samuel and, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	14 ed egli chiese: «Che aspetto ha?». Rispose la donna: «È un vecchio che ascende ed è avvolto in un mantello». Avendo Saul capito che quegli era Samuele, s'inchinò colla faccia a terra e gli si prostrò dinanzi.
15 Samuel said to Saul, 'Why have you disturbed my rest by conjuring me up?' Saul replied, 'I am ingreat distress; the Philistines are waging war on me, and God has abandoned me and no longer answers meeither by prophet or by dream; and so I have summoned you to tel me what I ought to do.'	15 Disse allora Samuele a Saul: «Perchè m'hai tu disturbato, facendomi evocare?». E Saul rispose: «Mi trovo in grandi angustie perchè i Filistei sono in lotta con me, e Dio mi ha abbandonato e non vuole esaudirmi nè per mezzo dei profeti nè per via dei sogni. Ti ho pertanto chiamato perchè mi faccia sapere quel che ho da fare».
16 Samuel said, 'Why consult me, when Yahweh has abandoned you and has become your enemy?	16 E Samuele disse: «Perchè interroghi me, mentre il Signore si è allontanato da te per mettersi col tuo rivale?
17 Yahweh has treated you as he foretold through me; he has snatched the sovereignty from your handand given it to your neighbour, David,	17 Il Signore ti tratterà come ebbe a dirti per mezzo mio, poichè ti strapperà dalle mani il regno e lo darà al tuo vicino, a Davide,
18 because you disobeyed Yahweh's voice and did not execute his fierce anger against Amalek. That iswhy Yahweh is treating you like this today.	18 perchè tu non hai obbedito alla voce del Signore, e non hai dato corso all'ira del suo furore contro Amalec. Perciò il Signore oggi ti sottopone a queste angosce.
19 What is more, Yahweh will deliver Israel and you too, into the power of the Philistines. Tomorrow youand your sons will be with me; and Yahweh wil hand over the army of Israel into the power of the Philistines.'	19 E il Signore darà anche Israele con te nelle mani dei Filistei. Domani poi, tanto tu che i tuoi figli sarete con me e anche il campo d'Israele sarà dato in balìa dei Filistei».
20 Immediately Saul fell ful length on the ground. He was terrified by what Samuel had said and wasalso weak from having eaten nothing al that day and night.	20 Immediatamente Saul cadde bocconi a terra, perchè si era atterrito alle parole di Samuele, ed era senza forze per non aver preso cibo in tutto quel giorno.
21 The woman went to Saul and, seeing his terror, said, 'Look, your servant has obeyed your order; Ihave taken my life in my hands and obeyed the command which you gave me.	21 La donna pertanto s'avvicinò a Saul (egli infatti era tutto turbato), e gli disse: «Ecco, la tua ancella ha ottemperato al tuo comando; io ho messo a repentaglio la mia vita per ascoltare le parole che mi hai rivolto.
22 Now please, you in your turn listen to what your servant has to say. Let me offer you a piece ofbread. Eat something and get some strength for your journey.'	22 Adesso ascolta anche tu la voce della tua serva; io porrò dinanzi a te un pezzo di pane, affinchè tu mangiando abbia a riprendere le forze per rimetterti in viaggio».
23 But he refused. 'I wil not eat,' he said. His servants however pressed him, and so did the woman.Al owing himself to be persuaded by them, he got up from the ground and sat on the bed.	23 Ma egli si rifiutò e disse: «Non mangerò». I suoi servi però e la donna gli fecero violenza e alla fine, dato ascolto alla loro voce, si levò da terra e si pose a sedere sul letto.
24 The woman owned a fattened calf which she quickly slaughtered, and she took some flour andkneaded it and with it baked some unleavened cakes	24 La donna, che avea in casa un vitello ingrassato, si affrettò a ucciderlo e presa della farina la impastò, e ne fece cuocere dei pani azzimi;
25 which she served to Saul and his servants; they ate, and then set off and left the same night.	25 pose poi quei cibi dinanzi a Saul e ai servi, i quali, come ebbero mangiato, si levarono e si posero in cammino quella stessa notte.
