1 It then happened that the Philistines mustered their forces for war, to fight Israel, and Achish said toDavid, 'It is understood that you and your men go into battle with me.'	1 En ces jours-là les Philistins rassemblèrent toutes leurs troupes en une seule armée pour combattre Israël. Akich dit à David: “Je veux te faire savoir que tu vas venir avec moi à la guerre avec tous tes hommes.”
2 David said to Achish, 'In that case, you wil soon see what your servant can do.' Achish replied toDavid, 'Right, I shal appoint you as my permanent bodyguard.'	2 David répondit à Akich: “Ainsi tu sauras toi aussi de quoi est capable ton serviteur.” Akich dit encore à David: “Dès à présent je te fais le gardien de ma personne.”
3 Now Samuel was dead, and al Israel had mourned him and buried him at Ramah, his own town. Saulhad expel ed the necromancers and wizards from the country.	3 On sait que Samuel était mort, que tout Israël l’avait pleuré et qu’on l’avait enterré dans sa ville, à Rama. Disons aussi que Saül avait fait disparaître du pays tous les devins, ceux qui évoquent les esprits des morts.
4 Meanwhile the Philistines had mustered and had come and pitched camp at Shunem. Saul musteredal Israel and they encamped at Gilboa.	4 Les Philistins se rassemblèrent à Chounem et ils y établirent leur camp. Saül aussi rassembla tout Israël: il installa son camp à Guelboé.
5 When Saul saw the Philistine camp, he was afraid and his heart trembled violently.	5 Lorsque Saül vit le camp des Philistins, il eut peur et son cœur trembla.
6 Saul consulted Yahweh, but Yahweh gave him no answer, either by dream, divination or prophet.	6 Saül consulta Yahvé, mais Yahvé ne répondit ni par les songes, ni par l’ourim, ni par les prophètes.
7 Saul then said to his servants, 'Find a necromancer for me, so that I can go and consult her.' Hisservants replied, 'There is a necromancer at En-Dor.'	7 Saül dit alors à ses serviteurs: “Cherchez-moi une femme qui évoque les morts et j’irai la consulter.” Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Il y a à En-Dor une femme qui évoque les morts.”
8 And so Saul, disguising himself and changing his clothes, set out accompanied by two men; their visitto the woman took place at night. 'Disclose the future to me', he said, 'by means of a ghost. Conjure up the one Ishall name to you.'	8 Saül se déguisa, il mit d’autres habits et partit, accompagné de deux hommes. Ils arrivèrent à la nuit chez cette femme et Saül lui dit: “Annonce-moi l’avenir en évoquant les esprits: tu feras monter du séjour des morts celui que je te dirai.”
9 The woman replied, 'Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has outlawed necromancers andwizards from the country; why are you setting a trap for my life, then, to have me killed?'	9 La femme répondit: “Tu dois bien savoir que Saül a fait disparaître du pays tous les devins et ceux qui évoquent les esprits; tu me tends peut-être un piège?”
10 But Saul swore to her by Yahweh, 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'no blame shal attach to you for thisbusiness.'	10 Saül lui fit ce serment par Yahvé: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, il ne t’arrivera aucun mal pour cela.”
11 The woman asked, 'Whom shal I conjure up for you?' He replied, 'Conjure up Samuel.'	11 La femme lui dit: “Qui ferai-je monter du séjour des morts?” Il répondit: “Fais monter Samuel.”
12 The woman then saw Samuel and, giving a great cry, she said to Saul, 'Why have you deceived me?You are Saul!'	12 La femme vit Samuel et elle poussa un grand cri. Elle dit à Saül: “Pourquoi m’as-tu trompée? Tu es Saül!”
13 The king said, 'Do not be afraid! What do you see?' The woman replied to Saul, 'I see a ghost risingfrom the earth.'	13 Le roi lui dit: “N’aie pas peur. Qu’as-tu vu?” La femme dit: “Je vois un être supérieur qui monte du profond de la terre.”
14 'What is he like?' he asked. She replied, 'It is an old man coming up; he is wrapped in a cloak.' Saulthen knew that it was Samuel and, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	14 Saül demanda: “Comment est-il?” Elle répondit: “C’est un vieillard qui monte, enveloppé dans son manteau.” Saül comprit que c’était Samuel, il s’agenouilla, la face contre terre, et se prosterna.
15 Samuel said to Saul, 'Why have you disturbed my rest by conjuring me up?' Saul replied, 'I am ingreat distress; the Philistines are waging war on me, and God has abandoned me and no longer answers meeither by prophet or by dream; and so I have summoned you to tel me what I ought to do.'	15 Samuel dit alors à Saül: “Pourquoi m’as-tu dérangé et me fais-tu monter du séjour des morts?” Saül répondit: “Je suis dans une grande détresse, les Philistins me font la guerre, Dieu s’est retiré de moi et ne me répond plus ni par les prophètes ni par les songes. Je t’ai donc appelé pour que tu me dises ce que je dois faire.”
16 Samuel said, 'Why consult me, when Yahweh has abandoned you and has become your enemy?	16 Samuel lui dit: “Pourquoi me consultes-tu? Parce que Yahvé s’est retiré de toi et qu’il est maintenant avec ton prochain?
17 Yahweh has treated you as he foretold through me; he has snatched the sovereignty from your handand given it to your neighbour, David,	17 Yahvé a réalisé ce qu’il m’avait chargé de t’annoncer: il a arraché la royauté de ta main et l’a donnée à ton serviteur David.
18 because you disobeyed Yahweh's voice and did not execute his fierce anger against Amalek. That iswhy Yahweh is treating you like this today.	18 Yahvé a agi de la sorte envers toi parce que tu ne lui as pas obéi et que tu n’as pas fait tomber sur Amalec le poids de sa colère.
19 What is more, Yahweh will deliver Israel and you too, into the power of the Philistines. Tomorrow youand your sons will be with me; and Yahweh wil hand over the army of Israel into the power of the Philistines.'	19 Yahvé va te livrer, et il livrera Israël avec toi aux mains des Philistins. Demain, toi et tes fils vous serez ici avec moi, et Yahvé livrera le camp d’Israël entre les mains des Philistins.”
20 Immediately Saul fell ful length on the ground. He was terrified by what Samuel had said and wasalso weak from having eaten nothing al that day and night.	20 Saül tomba à terre de tout son long, car les paroles de Samuel l’avaient glacé d’effroi; de plus les forces lui manquaient, car il n’avait rien mangé durant ce jour, ni de toute la nuit.
21 The woman went to Saul and, seeing his terror, said, 'Look, your servant has obeyed your order; Ihave taken my life in my hands and obeyed the command which you gave me.	21 Voyant combien il était abattu, la femme s’approcha de Saül et lui dit: “Ta servante t’a obéi, j’ai risqué ma vie pour obéir à ta demande.
22 Now please, you in your turn listen to what your servant has to say. Let me offer you a piece ofbread. Eat something and get some strength for your journey.'	22 Écoute-moi donc maintenant, accepte ce morceau de pain que je t’offre, mange et reprends des forces pour continuer ton chemin.”
23 But he refused. 'I wil not eat,' he said. His servants however pressed him, and so did the woman.Al owing himself to be persuaded by them, he got up from the ground and sat on the bed.	23 Mais il refusait et disait: “Je ne mangerai rien.” Les serviteurs et la femme insistèrent tellement qu’il finit par les écouter: il se leva et s’assit sur le divan.
24 The woman owned a fattened calf which she quickly slaughtered, and she took some flour andkneaded it and with it baked some unleavened cakes	24 La femme avait un veau gras, elle se dépêcha de le tuer. Elle prit de la farine, elle la pétrit et en fit des pains sans levain,
25 which she served to Saul and his servants; they ate, and then set off and left the same night.	25 puis elle servit ce repas à Saül et à ses serviteurs. Ils mangèrent, puis ils se levèrent et, cette même nuit, ils repartirent.
