1 Samuel 20

1 Fleeing from the huts at Ramah, David went and confronted Jonathan, 'What have I done, what is myguilt, how have I wronged your father, for him to want to take my life?'	1 David, fuggito da Naiot che è in Ramata, giunse dinanzi a Gionata e gli disse: «Che ho fatto io? Qual'è la mia iniquità e il mio peccato contro tuo padre, perch'egli cerchi la mia vita? »
2 He replied, 'You must not think that! You are not going to die. My father, you see, does nothing,important or unimportant, without confiding in me, so why should my father hide this from me? It is not true.'	2 Gionata gli rispose: « Non sia mai: tu non sarai ucciso: mio padre non farà nulla, grande o piccolo che sia, senza farmelo sapere. Perchè dunque dovrebbe celare questa cosa soltanto: Questo non sarà mai ».
3 In reply, David swore, 'Your father knows very wel that I enjoy your favour, and thinks, "Jonathanmust not know about this or he wil be upset." But, as Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, there is only a stepbetween me and death.'	3 E giurò di nuovo a David. Ma David disse: « Tuo padre sa che io ho trovato grazia negli occhi tuoi, e dirà: Non lo sappia Gionata, chè non si rattristi. Ma come vive il Signore, e come vive l'anima tua, non c'è che un sol passo (per dir così) tra me e la morte ».
4 At which, Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever you think best, I wil certainly do for you.'	4 Gionata disse a David: « Io farò per te tutto quello che l'anima tua mi dirà ».
5 David replied, 'Look, tomorrow is New Moon and I ought to sit at table with the king, but you must letme go and hide in the countryside until the evening.	5 E David disse a Gionata: « Ecco, domani è il primo del mese, ed io, secondo il solito, dovrei sedere presso il re a mangiare: lascia che io mi nasconda alla campagna, fino alla sera del terzo giorno.
6 If your father notices my absence, you must say, "David insistently asked me for permission to hurryover to Bethlehem, his home town, because they are holding the annual sacrifice there for the whole clan."	6 Se tuo padre, guardando, cercherà di me, tu gli risponderai: David mi ha chiesto di fargli fare una scappata a Betlemme sua città, perchè vi è un sacrifizio solenne per tutti quelli della sua tribù.
7 If he says, "Very wel ," your servant is safe, but if he flies into a rage, you may be sure that he hassome evil plan.	7 S'egli dice: Va bene, il tuo servo avrà pace; ma s'egli si adira, sappi che la sua malizia è al colmo.
8 Show your servant faithful love, since you have bound your servant to you by a pact in Yahweh'sname. But if I am guilty, then kil me yourself -- why take me to your father?'	8 Usa dunque misericordia al tuo servo, giacché hai fatto fare a me tuo servo l'alleanza del Signore con te: se vi è in me qualche colpa, dammi tu la morte, ma non mi presentare a tuo padre ».
9 Jonathan replied, 'Perish the thought! If I knew for sure that my father was determined to do you amischief, would I not have told you?'	9 Gionata disse: « Non ci pensare nemmeno, perchè non è possibile che, ove conosca con certezza che il mal animo di mio padre contro di te è giunto al colmo, io non te lo faccia sapere ».
10 David then said to Jonathan, 'Who wil let me know if your father gives you a harsh answer?'	10 David disse a Gionata: « Chi me lo dirà, se per disgrazia tuo padre ti risponde duramente a mio riguardo? »
11 Jonathan then said to David, 'Come on, let us go out into the country,' and the pair of them went outinto the country.	11 Allora Gionata disse a David: « Vieni, andiamo fuori alla campagna ». Quando furono tutti due alla campagna,
12 Jonathan then said to David, 'By Yahweh, God of Israel! I shal sound my father this time tomorrow; ifal is wel for David and I do not then send and inform you,	12 Gionata disse rivolto a David: « Signore Dio d'Israele! Se io domani o doman l'altro, scoprendo quello che pensa mio padre, ed essendovi qualche cosa di buono per David, non manderò subito da te, e non te lo farò sapere,
13 may Yahweh bring unnameable ills to Jonathan and worse ones too! If my father intends to do you amischief, I shal tel you so and let you get away, so that you can be safe. And may Yahweh be with you as heused to be with my father!	13 il Signore faccia a Gionata questo e peggio. Se poi durasse il mal animo di mio padre contro di te, io te lo confiderò e ti lascerò andare in pace, e il Signore sia con te come fu con mio padre.
14 If I am stil alive, show your servant faithful love; if I die,	14 E se io vivrò, userai verso di me la misericordia del Signore; se poi morissi,
15 never withdraw your faithful love from my family. When Yahweh has exterminated every enemy ofDavid's from the face of the earth,	15 in perpetuo non ritirerai la tua misercordia dalla mia casa, quando il Signore sterminerà l'un dopo l'altro dal mondo i nemici di David: tolga il Signore Gionata dalla sua casa e faccia vendetta dei nemici di David ».
16 do not let Jonathan's name be exterminated with Saul's family, or may Yahweh cal David toaccount!'	16 Così Gionata strinse alleanza colla casa di David e Signore fece vendetta dei nemici di David.
17 Jonathan then renewed his oath to David, since he loved him like his very soul.	17 Gionata aggiunse questo altro giuramento a David, perchè l'amava, l'amava come l'anima propria.
18 Jonathan then said to David, 'Tomorrow is New Moon; your absence wil be noticed, since your placewil be empty.	18 Poi Gionata disse a David: « Essendo domani il primo del mese, tu sarai cercato
19 The day after tomorrow your absence wil be very marked, and you must go to the place where youhid on the day of the deed, and stay beside that mound.	19 e sarà domandato del tuo posto fino a domanl'altro. Allora tu, scendendo in fretta, verrai al luogo dove tu devi star nascosto nel giorno in cui si può lavorare, e ti porrai vicino alla pietra chiamata Ezel.
20 For my part, the day after tomorrow I shal shoot three arrows in that direction, as though at a target.	20 Io tirerò tre frecce verso di essa, scoccandole come per esercitarmi al tiro a segno.
21 I shal then send a servant to go and find the arrows. If I say to him, "The arrows are this side of you,get them," come out, since al will be well for you and nothing the matter, as sure as Yahweh lives.	21 Manderò poi un servo a cui dirò: Va, riportami le frecce ».
22 But if I say to him, "The arrows are ahead of you," then be off, for Yahweh himself wil be sendingyou away.	22 Se io dirò al servo: Bada che le frecce son di qua da te, prendile, allora vieni pure, perchè per te c'la pace e niente di male. Il Signore vive! Ma se io dirò al servo: Bada che le frecce son di là da te, vattene in pace; il Signore ti fa partire.
23 And as regards the agreement we made, you and I, why, Yahweh is witness between us for ever.'	23 Quanto poi alle parole che abbiamo dette io e te, il Signore sia tra me e te in eterno ».
24 So David hid in the country; New Moon came and the king sat down to his meal.	24 David si nascose adunque nella campagna, e venuto il primo del mese, il resi assise a mensa.
25 He sat in his usual place with his back to the wall, Jonathan sat facing him and Abner sat next toSaul; but David's place was empty.	25 Postosi a sedere il re sulla sua solita seggiola vicina al muro, e restando ritto Gionata, Abner si assise accanto a Saul. Allora apparve vuoto il posto di David.
26 Saul said nothing that day, thinking, 'It is sheer chance; he is unclean.'	26 Ma Saul non disse nulla in quel giorno, perchè penava che forse a David fosse accaduto di non esser mondo nè purificato.
27 On the day after New Moon, the second day, David's place was stil empty.	27 Ma anche il giorno dopo apparve di nuovo vuoto il posto il David. Allora Saul disse a suo figlio Gionata: « Per qual motivo il figlio d'Isai non è venuto a mangiare, nè ieri, nè oggi?
28 Saul said to his son Jonathan, 'Why did not the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday ortoday?'	28 E Gionata rispose a Saul: « Mi ha pregato instantemente di lasciarlo andare a Betlem,
29 Jonathan answered Saul, 'David insistently asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. "Please letme go," he said, "for we are holding the clan sacrifice in the town and my brothers have ordered me to attend.So now, if I enjoy your favour, let me get away and see my brothers." That is why he has not come to the king'stable.'	29 dicendomi: Lasciami andare, perchè vi è un sacrificio solcenne nella mia città, uno dei miei fratelli mi ha invitato: or dunque se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, andrò in fretta a rivedere i miei fratelli. Per questo egli non è venuto alla mensa del re ».
30 Saul flew into a rage with Jonathan and said, 'Son of a rebel ious slut! Don't I know that you side withthe son of Jesse to your own shame and your mother's dishonour?	30 Ma Saul, adiratosi contro Gionata, gli disse: « Figlio d'una donna corrotta, non so forse che tu ami il figlio d'Isai per tua confusione e per confusione dell'indegna tua madre?
31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your royal rights are secure. Now havehim fetched and brought to me; he deserves to die.'	31 Finché sarà vivo il figlio d'Isai sopra la terra, non ci sarà sicurezza nè per te nè per il tuo regno. Or dunque manda a prenderlo e menamelo. perchè egli è un figlio di morte »,
32 Jonathan retorted to his father Saul, 'Why should he die? What has he done?'	32 Ma Gionata. rispondendo a Saul suo padre, disse: « Perchè dovrà morire? Che cosa ha fatto? »
33 But Saul brandished his spear at him to strike him, and Jonathan realised that his father wasdetermined that David should die.	33 Saul afferrò la lancia per colpirlo. Allora Gionata capì che era una cosa già determinata da suo padre l'uccisione di David,
34 Hot with anger, Jonathan got up from the table and ate nothing on the second day of the month,being upset about David -- and because his father had insulted him.	34 e si levò da mensa in un eccesso di collera e non toccò cibo in quel secondo giorno del mese, perchè era afflitto a causa di David e perchè suo padre l'aveva oltraggiato.
35 Next morning, Jonathan went out into the country at the time agreed with David, taking a youngservant with him.	35 Venuto il mattino, Gionata andò con un piccolo servo alla campagna secondo quello che aveva convenuto con David.
36 He said to his servant, 'Run and find the arrows which I am going to shoot,' and the servant ran whileJonathan shot an arrow ahead of him.	36 Gionata disse al servo: « Va, e riportami le frecce che tiro ». Mentre il servo correva, egli tirò un'altra freccia di là da esso.
37 When the servant reached the spot to which Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan shouted afterhim, 'Is not the arrow ahead of you?'	37 Quando il servo giunse al luogo della freccia che Gionata aveva tirata, Gionata gli gridò dietro e gli disse: «Ecco, la freccia è là, al di là di te »,
38 Again Jonathan shouted after the servant, 'Quick! Hurry, do not stand around.' Jonathan's servantpicked up the arrow and brought it back to his master.	38 Gionata gridò ancora al servo: « Sbrigati, non ti trattenere ». Il servo di Gionata, raccolte le frecce, le portò al suo padrone, pignorando completamente di che si trattasse, perchè soltanto Gionata e David sapevano la cosa.
39 The servant suspected nothing; only Jonathan and David knew what was meant.	39 Poi Gionata diede al servo le sue armi e gli disse: « Va e portale in città » .
40 Jonathan then gave his weapons to his servant and said, 'Go and carry them to the town.'	40 Partito il servo, David uscì dal luogo che guardava verso mezzodì e gettandosi bocconi per terra, si prostrò per tre volte. Poi baciandosi l'un l'altro, essi piansero insieme, e David oltremodo.
41 As soon as the servant had gone, David stood up beside the mound, threw himself to the ground,prostrating himself three times. They then embraced each other, both weeping copiously.	41 Finalmente Gionata disse a David: « Va in pace: resta tutto quello che noi due abbiamo giurato nel nome del Signore, dicendo: Il signore sia tra me e te, e tra la mia discendenza e la tua discendenza in eterno ».
42 Jonathan then said to David, 'Go in peace. And as regards the oath that both of us have sworn bythe name of Yahweh, may Yahweh be witness between you and me, between your descendants and mine forever.'	42 David si mosse e partì, e Gionata tornò in città.
