1 Fleeing from the huts at Ramah, David went and confronted Jonathan, 'What have I done, what is myguilt, how have I wronged your father, for him to want to take my life?'	1 Ma David si fuggi da Najoth, che è presso Ramatha; e andò a parlare a Gionata (e disse): Che ho fatt’io? Qual’è l’iniquità, e il peccato commesso da me verso il padre tuo, che vuole la mia vita?
2 He replied, 'You must not think that! You are not going to die. My father, you see, does nothing,important or unimportant, without confiding in me, so why should my father hide this from me? It is not true.'	2 Rispose quegli: Mai no: tu non morrai: imperocché non farebbe giammai il padre mio cosa alcuna o grande, o piccola, senza prima darmene parte: celerà egli adunque a me il padre mio questa cosa solamente? questo non sarà mai.
3 In reply, David swore, 'Your father knows very wel that I enjoy your favour, and thinks, "Jonathanmust not know about this or he wil be upset." But, as Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, there is only a stepbetween me and death.'	3 E fece nuovo giuramento a Davidde. Ma questi disse: Sa certamente il padre tuo, com’io ho trovata grazia negli occhi tuoi, e dirà: Gionata non dee saper questo, affinchè non ne abbia dispiacere. Per altro (viva il Signore, e viva l’anima tua) un solo gradino, per così dire, v'ha tra me, e la morte.
4 At which, Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever you think best, I wil certainly do for you.'	4 E Gionata disse a David: Farò io per te tutto quello che mi dirai.
5 David replied, 'Look, tomorrow is New Moon and I ought to sit at table with the king, but you must letme go and hide in the countryside until the evening.	5 E David disse a Gionata: Tu sai che domane son le calende, e io, secondo il costume, sono solito a sedere a tavola presso al re: lascia adunque che io mi nasconda alla campagna sino alla sera del terzo giorno.
6 If your father notices my absence, you must say, "David insistently asked me for permission to hurryover to Bethlehem, his home town, because they are holding the annual sacrifice there for the whole clan."	6 Se il padre tuo facendovi attenzione cercherà di me, tu gli risponderai: David mi ha chiesto in grazia di andare prontamente a Bethlehem sua patria: perocché vi è un sacrifizio solenne per tutti quelli di sua tribù.
7 If he says, "Very wel ," your servant is safe, but if he flies into a rage, you may be sure that he hassome evil plan.	7 S’egli dice: Bene sta: il tuo servo avrà pace: ma s'egli ne prende ira, sappi, che la malizia di lui è giunta al colmo.
8 Show your servant faithful love, since you have bound your servant to you by a pact in Yahweh'sname. But if I am guilty, then kil me yourself -- why take me to your father?'	8 Abbi adunque pietà del tuo servo: dappoiché hai fatto contrarre a me tuo servo una sacra alleanza con te: che se è in me qualche colpa, tu dammi la morte, ma non introdurmi dal padre tuo.
9 Jonathan replied, 'Perish the thought! If I knew for sure that my father was determined to do you amischief, would I not have told you?'	9 E Gionata disse: Lungi sia questo da te: perocché non è possibile, che ove io conosca, che il mal animo del padre mio sia giunto all’ultimo segno contro di te, io non te lo faccia sapere.
10 David then said to Jonathan, 'Who wil let me know if your father gives you a harsh answer?'	10 E David rispose a Gionata: Chi mi recherà l'avviso, ove per disgrazia il padre tuo ti dia qualche cattiva risposta riguardo a me?
11 Jonathan then said to David, 'Come on, let us go out into the country,' and the pair of them went outinto the country.	11 E Gionata disse a David: Vieni, andiamo fuori alla campagna. E quando furono ambedue alla campagna,
12 Jonathan then said to David, 'By Yahweh, God of Israel! I shal sound my father this time tomorrow; ifal is wel for David and I do not then send and inform you,	12 Disse Gionata a David: Signore Dio d'Israele, se io domani, o il giorno appresso scoprirò quello che pensi il padre mio, e vi sarà qualche cosa di buon per Davidde, e non gliene darò subito parte, e non farollo sapere a lui,
13 may Yahweh bring unnameable ills to Jonathan and worse ones too! If my father intends to do you amischief, I shal tel you so and let you get away, so that you can be safe. And may Yahweh be with you as heused to be with my father!	13 Il Signore faccia questo e peggio a Gionata. E se il padre mio conserverà tuttora il suo mal animo contro di te, io te lo confiderò, e ti darò licenza di andartene in pace, e il Signore sia con te, come fu col padre mio:
14 If I am stil alive, show your servant faithful love; if I die,	14 E se io vivrò, userai di tua gran bontà verso di me: che se io morrò,
15 never withdraw your faithful love from my family. When Yahweh has exterminated every enemy ofDavid's from the face of the earth,	15 Non lascerai di avere compassione in perpetuo della mia casa, allorché il Signore sterminerà l’un dopo l'altro dal mondo i nemici di David: (altrimenti) il Signore levi Gionata dalla sua casa, come punirà i nemici di David.
16 do not let Jonathan's name be exterminated with Saul's family, or may Yahweh cal David toaccount!'	16 Strinse adunque Gionata alleanza colla casa di David: ma il Signore fece vendetta de' nemici di David.
17 Jonathan then renewed his oath to David, since he loved him like his very soul.	17 Fece di più Gionata a David quest'altro giuramento, perchè gli voleva bene, e veramente lo amava come l'anima propria.
18 Jonathan then said to David, 'Tomorrow is New Moon; your absence wil be noticed, since your placewil be empty.	18 E dissegli Gionata: Domane son le calende, e si cercherà di te:
19 The day after tomorrow your absence wil be very marked, and you must go to the place where youhid on the day of the deed, and stay beside that mound.	19 Perocchè si cercherà il perchè tu non sii al tuo posto anche il dì seguente. Scenderai pertanto in fretta al luogo, dove tu dei star nascosto il dì lavorativo, e ti porrai presso alla pietra chiamata Ezel.
20 For my part, the day after tomorrow I shal shoot three arrows in that direction, as though at a target.	20 E io tirerò tre saette verso quella (pietra), scoccandole come per esercitarmi a tirar al segno.
21 I shal then send a servant to go and find the arrows. If I say to him, "The arrows are this side of you,get them," come out, since al will be well for you and nothing the matter, as sure as Yahweh lives.	21 E manderò anche un servo, a cui dirò: Va, e riportami le saette.
22 But if I say to him, "The arrows are ahead of you," then be off, for Yahweh himself wil be sendingyou away.	22 Se io dirò al servo: Bada, che le saette sono di qua da te, prendile, tu (allora) vieni a trovarmi, perocché tu se’ sicuro, e non vi è mal nissuno, viva il Signore. Ma se io dirò al servo: Bada, che le saette sono di là da te: vattene in pace: il Signore ti manda via.
23 And as regards the agreement we made, you and I, why, Yahweh is witness between us for ever.'	23 Quanto poi a quella che abbiam discorso tra noi, il Signore ne sia (testimone) tra me, e te in eterno.
24 So David hid in the country; New Moon came and the king sat down to his meal.	24 Davidde adunque stette nascosto alla campagna, e vennero le calende, e il re si assise a mensa.
25 He sat in his usual place with his back to the wall, Jonathan sat facing him and Abner sat next toSaul; but David's place was empty.	25 E quando il re si fu posto a sedere sulla sua sedia, la quale, secondo l’uso, era vicina al muro, Gionata si alzò, e Abner si assise accanto a Saul, e voto videsi il posto di Davidde.
26 Saul said nothing that day, thinking, 'It is sheer chance; he is unclean.'	26 E Saul non disse nulla quel giorno: perocchè si pensò che fosse accaduto fosse a Davidde di non esser mondo, nè purificato.
27 On the day after New Moon, the second day, David's place was stil empty.	27 Ma venuto l’altro dì dopo le calende, videsi di nuovo il posto di Davidde rimaner voto. E Saul disse al suo figlio Gionata: Per qual motivo il figliuolo d’Isai non è venuto a mangiare nè jeri, né oggi?
28 Saul said to his son Jonathan, 'Why did not the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday ortoday?'	28 E Gionata rispose a Saul: Mi ha pregato istantemente di lasciarlo andare a Bethlehem:
29 Jonathan answered Saul, 'David insistently asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. "Please letme go," he said, "for we are holding the clan sacrifice in the town and my brothers have ordered me to attend.So now, if I enjoy your favour, let me get away and see my brothers." That is why he has not come to the king'stable.'	29 E ha detto: Permettimi ch’io vada, mentre un sagrifizio solenne fassi nella città, uno de' miei fratelli mi ha invitato: or adunque se io ho trovato grazia negli occhi tuoi, andrò tosto, e rivedrò i miei fratelli. Per questo egli non è venuto alla mensa del re.
30 Saul flew into a rage with Jonathan and said, 'Son of a rebel ious slut! Don't I know that you side withthe son of Jesse to your own shame and your mother's dishonour?	30 Ma Saul si adirò contro Gionata, e gli disse: Figliuolo di donna che va a caccia di uomini, non so io forse che tu vuoi bene al figliuolo d’Isai per tua confusione, e per confusione dell'indegna tua madre?
31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your royal rights are secure. Now havehim fetched and brought to me; he deserves to die.'	31 Imperocché sino a tanto che il figliuolo d'Isai avrà vita sopra la terra, tu non sarai sicuro detto stato tuo, nè del tuo regno. Per la qual cosa fin da questo punto spedisci gente a condurlo a me: perocché egli dee morire.
32 Jonathan retorted to his father Saul, 'Why should he die? What has he done?'	32 Ma Gionata rispose a Saul padre suo e disse: Perchè dovrà agli morire? che ha egli fatto?
33 But Saul brandished his spear at him to strike him, and Jonathan realised that his father wasdetermined that David should die.	33 E Saulle diè di piglio alla lancia per ferirlo. E riconobbe Gionata, come il padre suo era risoluto di uccider Davidde.
34 Hot with anger, Jonathan got up from the table and ate nothing on the second day of the month,being upset about David -- and because his father had insulted him.	34 Gionata adunque si levò infuriato da mensa, e non gustò cibo il secondo dì delle calende. Perocché era afflitto per ragion di Davidde, e pel disonore fattogli dal suo padre.
35 Next morning, Jonathan went out into the country at the time agreed with David, taking a youngservant with him.	35 E alla punta del dì (seguente) andò Gionata alla campagna, secondo il concerto fatto con Davidde, ed era con lui un piccolo garzone.
36 He said to his servant, 'Run and find the arrows which I am going to shoot,' and the servant ran whileJonathan shot an arrow ahead of him.	36 Al quale egli disse: Va, e riportami le saette che io tiro. E mentre quegli andava di corsa, tirò egli un'altra saetta di là da lui.
37 When the servant reached the spot to which Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan shouted afterhim, 'Is not the arrow ahead of you?'	37 E il garzoncello essendo giunto al luogo della (prima) saetta tirata da Gionata, sclamò Gionata appresso a lui, e disse: Bada che la saetta è là più innanzi a te.
38 Again Jonathan shouted after the servant, 'Quick! Hurry, do not stand around.' Jonathan's servantpicked up the arrow and brought it back to his master.	38 E di nuovo Gionata diede un grido dietro al garzoncello, e disse: Fa presto: non ti trattenere. E il garzone di Gionata raccolse le saette, e portolle al suo padrone.
39 The servant suspected nothing; only Jonathan and David knew what was meant.	39 Ed ei non sapeva nulla affatto di che si trattasse: perchè soli Gionata, e David lo sapevano.
40 Jonathan then gave his weapons to his servant and said, 'Go and carry them to the town.'	40 Indi Gionata diede al servo le sue armi, e gli disse: Va e portale alla città.
41 As soon as the servant had gone, David stood up beside the mound, threw himself to the ground,prostrating himself three times. They then embraced each other, both weeping copiously.	41 E partito il servo, si levò Davidde dal suo posto, che era verso mezzodì, e si prostrò boccone per terra, facendo riverenza per tre volte: e baciandosi l'un l'altro pensiero insieme, ma più Davidde.
42 Jonathan then said to David, 'Go in peace. And as regards the oath that both of us have sworn bythe name of Yahweh, may Yahweh be witness between you and me, between your descendants and mine forever.'	42 Gionata adunque disse a Davidde: Va in pace: tutto quello che abbiam giurato nel nome del Signore noi due dicendo: il Signore sia (testimone) tra me e te, tra la mia stirpe, e la tua stirpe in eterno...
	43 E David si mosse, e partì: e Gionata tornò in città.
