1 Samuel 20

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Fleeing from the huts at Ramah, David went and confronted Jonathan, 'What have I done, what is myguilt, how have I wronged your father, for him to want to take my life?'	1 David huyó de Naiot, en Ramá, y se presentó ante Jonatán. «¿Qué hice yo?, le dijo. ¿Cuál es mi falta o mi pecado contra tu padre, para que me persiga a muerte?».
2 He replied, 'You must not think that! You are not going to die. My father, you see, does nothing,important or unimportant, without confiding in me, so why should my father hide this from me? It is not true.'	2 Jonatán le respondió: «¡Ni pensarlo! ¡Tú no morirás! Mira, mi padre no hace absolutamente nada sin comunicármelo. ¿Por qué entonces me habría de ocultar este asunto? ¡No hay nada de eso!».
3 In reply, David swore, 'Your father knows very wel that I enjoy your favour, and thinks, "Jonathanmust not know about this or he wil be upset." But, as Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, there is only a stepbetween me and death.'	3 Pero David insistió: «Tu padre sabe muy bien que yo te he caído en gracia, y habrá pensado: «Que Jonatán no se entere, no sea que se entristezca». Sin embargo, ¡por la vida del Señor y por tu propia vida, estoy a un paso de la muerte!».
4 At which, Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever you think best, I wil certainly do for you.'	4 Jonatán dijo a David: «Estoy dispuesto, a hacer por ti lo que tú me digas».
5 David replied, 'Look, tomorrow is New Moon and I ought to sit at table with the king, but you must letme go and hide in the countryside until the evening.	5 David le respondió: «Mañana es la luna nueva, y tendré que compartir la mesa con tu padre. Tú me dejarás partir, y yo me ocultaré al descampado hasta pasado mañana por la tarde.
6 If your father notices my absence, you must say, "David insistently asked me for permission to hurryover to Bethlehem, his home town, because they are holding the annual sacrifice there for the whole clan."	6 Si tu padre nota mi ausencia, tú le dirás: «David me insistió para que lo dejara ir de una corrida hasta Belén, su ciudad, porque allí se celebra el sacrificio anual de toda la familia».
7 If he says, "Very wel ," your servant is safe, but if he flies into a rage, you may be sure that he hassome evil plan.	7 Si él dice: «Está bien», tu servidor podrá sentirse tranquilo. Pero si se pone furioso, sabrás que él ha decidido mi ruina.
8 Show your servant faithful love, since you have bound your servant to you by a pact in Yahweh'sname. But if I am guilty, then kil me yourself -- why take me to your father?'	8 Sé leal con tu servidor, ya que le has hecho contraer contigo un pacto en nombre del Señor. Si en algo he faltado, mátame tú mismo. ¿Para qué me harás comparecer ante tu padre?».
9 Jonathan replied, 'Perish the thought! If I knew for sure that my father was determined to do you amischief, would I not have told you?'	9 «¡Ni lo pienses!, le dijo Jonatán. Si supiera realmente que mi padre está decidido a infligirte algún mal, seguro que te lo comunicaría».
10 David then said to Jonathan, 'Who wil let me know if your father gives you a harsh answer?'	10 David le preguntó: «¿Quién me avisará si tu padre te responde duramente?».
11 Jonathan then said to David, 'Come on, let us go out into the country,' and the pair of them went outinto the country.	11 Jonatán dijo a David: «Vamos al campo». Y los dos salieron al campo.
12 Jonathan then said to David, 'By Yahweh, God of Israel! I shal sound my father this time tomorrow; ifal is wel for David and I do not then send and inform you,	12 Jonatán dijo a David: «¡El Señor, el Dios de Israel, es testigo! Mañana o pasado mañana, a esta misma hora, trataré de averiguar las intenciones de mi padre. Si todo marcha bien para ti y no te mando a nadie que te avise,
13 may Yahweh bring unnameable ills to Jonathan and worse ones too! If my father intends to do you amischief, I shal tel you so and let you get away, so that you can be safe. And may Yahweh be with you as heused to be with my father!	13 ¡que el Señor me castigue una y otra vez! Y en caso de que mi padre quiera hacerte algún mal, te avisaré también y te dejaré partir. Así podrás irte en paz, y que el Señor esté contigo como lo estuvo con mi padre.
14 If I am stil alive, show your servant faithful love; if I die,	14 Si entonces vivo todavía, tú me demostrarás la fidelidad que el Señor exige. Y si estoy muerto,
15 never withdraw your faithful love from my family. When Yahweh has exterminated every enemy ofDavid's from the face of the earth,	15 seguirás siendo leal con mi casa para siempre, aun cuando el Señor haya extirpado de la superficie del suelo a cada uno de los enemigos de David».
16 do not let Jonathan's name be exterminated with Saul's family, or may Yahweh cal David toaccount!'	16 Y Jonatán concluyó un pacto con la casa de David, en estos términos: «Que el Señor pida cuenta de esto a los enemigos de David».
17 Jonathan then renewed his oath to David, since he loved him like his very soul.	17 Jonatán hizo prestar otra vez juramento a David, a causa del amor que le tenía, porque lo quería como a sí mismo.
18 Jonathan then said to David, 'Tomorrow is New Moon; your absence wil be noticed, since your placewil be empty.	18 Jonatán dijo a David: «Mañana es la luna nueva. Se advertirá tu ausencia, porque notarán que tu puesto está vacío,
19 The day after tomorrow your absence wil be very marked, and you must go to the place where youhid on the day of the deed, and stay beside that mound.	19 y lo mismo sucederá pasado mañana. Por eso, desciende bien abajo, al lugar donde estuviste escondido la otra vez, y quédate junto a aquel montón de piedras.
20 For my part, the day after tomorrow I shal shoot three arrows in that direction, as though at a target.	20 Yo, por mi parte, lanzaré tres flechas en esa dirección,como quien tira al blanco.
21 I shal then send a servant to go and find the arrows. If I say to him, "The arrows are this side of you,get them," come out, since al will be well for you and nothing the matter, as sure as Yahweh lives.	21 Luego mandaré al servidor a buscar la flecha. Si yo le digo: «La tienes más acá, recógela», entonces ven; puedes estar tranquilo y no hay ningún inconveniente, ¡por la vida del Señor!
22 But if I say to him, "The arrows are ahead of you," then be off, for Yahweh himself wil be sendingyou away.	22 Pero si yo digo al muchacho: «La tienes más allá», entonces vete, porque el Señor quiere que te vayas.
23 And as regards the agreement we made, you and I, why, Yahweh is witness between us for ever.'	23 En cuanto a la palabra que nos hemos dado mutuamente, el Señor está entre tú y yo para siempre».
24 So David hid in the country; New Moon came and the king sat down to his meal.	24 David se escondió en el descampado. Al llegar la luna nueva, el rey se sentó a la mesa para comer.
25 He sat in his usual place with his back to the wall, Jonathan sat facing him and Abner sat next toSaul; but David's place was empty.	25 Como lo hacía habitualmente, ocupó su asiento contra la pared, Jonatán se puso enfrente y Abner se sentó al lado de Saúl; pero el puesto de David quedó vacío.
26 Saul said nothing that day, thinking, 'It is sheer chance; he is unclean.'	26 Ese día Saúl no dijo nada, porque pensó: «Debe ser una casualidad; seguramente no se ha purificado y se encuentra en estado de impureza».
27 On the day after New Moon, the second day, David's place was stil empty.	27 Pero al día siguiente de la luna nueva, el segundo día, el puesto de David aún estaba vacío. Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán: «¿Por qué el hijo de Jesé no ha venido al banquete ni ayer ni hoy?».
28 Saul said to his son Jonathan, 'Why did not the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday ortoday?'	28 Jonatán respondió a Saúl: «David me insistió para que lo dejara ir hasta Belén.
29 Jonathan answered Saul, 'David insistently asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. "Please letme go," he said, "for we are holding the clan sacrifice in the town and my brothers have ordered me to attend.So now, if I enjoy your favour, let me get away and see my brothers." That is why he has not come to the king'stable.'	29 «Por favor, me dijo, déjame partir, porque se celebra el sacrificio familiar en la ciudad y mi propio hermano me ha ordenado que vaya. Ahora, si quieres hacerme un favor, iré de una escapada a ver a mis hermanos». Por eso él no ha venido a la mesa del rey».
30 Saul flew into a rage with Jonathan and said, 'Son of a rebel ious slut! Don't I know that you side withthe son of Jesse to your own shame and your mother's dishonour?	30 Saúl se enfureció contra Jonatán y le dijo: «¡Hijo de una mala mujer! ¿Acaso yo no sé que tú estás de parte del hijo de Jesé, para vergüenza tuya y deshonra de tu madre?
31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your royal rights are secure. Now havehim fetched and brought to me; he deserves to die.'	31 Porque mientras el hijo de Jesé viva sobre la tierra, no habrá seguridad ni para ti ni para tu reino. Manda ahora mismo que me lo traigan, porque merece la muerte».
32 Jonathan retorted to his father Saul, 'Why should he die? What has he done?'	32 Pero Jonatán replicó a su padre Saúl: «¿Por qué va a morir? ¿Qué ha hecho.
33 But Saul brandished his spear at him to strike him, and Jonathan realised that his father wasdetermined that David should die.	33 Saúl empuñó la lanza para atacarlo, y entonces Jonatán comprendió que su padre ya tenía resuelto matar a David.
34 Hot with anger, Jonathan got up from the table and ate nothing on the second day of the month,being upset about David -- and because his father had insulted him.	34 Jonatán se levantó de la mesa muy enojado, y no comió nada el segundo día de la luna nueva, porque estaba afligido a causa de David, a quien su padre había injuriado.
35 Next morning, Jonathan went out into the country at the time agreed with David, taking a youngservant with him.	35 A la mañana siguiente, Jonatán salió al campo en compañía de un joven servidor, según lo convenido con David,
36 He said to his servant, 'Run and find the arrows which I am going to shoot,' and the servant ran whileJonathan shot an arrow ahead of him.	36 y dijo a su servidor: «Corre a buscar las flechas que voy a tirar». El servidor fue corriendo, y Jonatán lanzó la flecha más allá de él.
37 When the servant reached the spot to which Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan shouted afterhim, 'Is not the arrow ahead of you?'	37 Cuando el niño llegó al lugar donde estaba la flecha que había tirado Jonatán, este gritó detrás de él: «Ahí la tienes, más allá».
38 Again Jonathan shouted after the servant, 'Quick! Hurry, do not stand around.' Jonathan's servantpicked up the arrow and brought it back to his master.	38 Luego gritó otra vez detrás de él: «¡Rápido, apúrate, no te quedes parado!». El servidor recogió la flecha y volvió adonde estaba su señor,
39 The servant suspected nothing; only Jonathan and David knew what was meant.	39 sin darse cuenta de nada; sólo Jonatán y David estaban al tanto de la cosa.
40 Jonathan then gave his weapons to his servant and said, 'Go and carry them to the town.'	40 Luego Jonatán entregó sus armas al niño y le dijo: «Ve y lleva esto a la ciudad».
41 As soon as the servant had gone, David stood up beside the mound, threw himself to the ground,prostrating himself three times. They then embraced each other, both weeping copiously.	41 Cuando el servidor partió, David subió del lado del sur y se postró tres veces con el rostro en tierra. Después, uno y otro se abrazaron llorando, hasta que la pena de David creció más todavía.
42 Jonathan then said to David, 'Go in peace. And as regards the oath that both of us have sworn bythe name of Yahweh, may Yahweh be witness between you and me, between your descendants and mine forever.'	42 Entonces Jonatán dijo a David: «Vete en paz, ya que los dos nos hemos hecho un juramento en nombre del Señor, diciendo: «Que el Señor esté entre tú y yo, entre mi descendencia y la tuya para siempre».
