1 When David had finished talking to Saul, Jonathan felt an instant affection for David; Jonathan lovedhim like his very self;	1 Quando Davide ebbe finito di parlare a Saul, l'anima di Gionata si sentì legata all'anima di Davide; Gionata lo amò come la sua anima.
2 Saul engaged him that very day and would not let him go home to his father.	2 Saul lo trattenne quel giorno e non gli permise di ritornare a casa di suo padre.
3 Jonathan made a pact with David, since he loved him like his very self;	3 Gionata fece un patto con Davide, perché lo amava come la sua anima.
4 Jonathan took off the cloak which he was wearing and gave it to David, and his armour too, evenincluding his sword, his bow and his belt.	4 Gionata si tolse il proprio manto che aveva indosso e lo dette a Davide, così pure le sue vesti e perfino la sua spada, il suo arco e la sua cintura.
5 Wherever David was sent on a mission by Saul, he was successful, and Saul put him in command ofthe fighting men; al the people respected him and so did Saul's staff.	5 Davide aveva successo nelle scorrerie ovunque Saul lo mandasse, così che Saul lo prepose agli uomini di guerra. Era ben visto da tutto il popolo e perfino dai cortigiani di Saul.
6 On their return, when David was coming back from kil ing the Philistine, the women came out of al thetowns of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, sistrums and cries of joy;	6 Al loro rientro, quando Davide ritornava dopo avere battuto il filisteo, le donne uscirono incontro al re Saul da tutte le città d'Israele per cantare danzando con tamburelli, con grida di gioia e con sistri.
7 and as they danced the women sang: Saul has kil ed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.	7 Le donne danzavano ripetendo il ritornello: "Saul colpì le sue migliaia, ma Davide le sue miriadi!".
8 Saul was very angry; the incident displeased him. 'They have given David the tens of thousands,' hesaid, 'but me only the thousands; what more can he have, except the throne?'	8 Saul se ne adirò fortemente e questa cosa gli dispiacque. Diceva: "A Davide hanno attribuito le miriadi e a me hanno dato le migliaia. Ora gli manca solo il regno!".
9 And Saul watched David jealously from that day onwards.	9 Così Saul guardò Davide con gelosia da quel giorno in poi.
10 The fol owing day, an evil spirit from God seized on Saul and he fell into a frenzy while he wasindoors. David played the harp as on other occasions; Saul had a spear in his hand.	10 L'indomani uno spirito maligno di Dio irruppe su Saul, e questi si mise a delirare in mezzo alla casa, mentre Davide suonava con la sua mano come gli altri giorni. Saul aveva la sua lancia in mano.
11 Saul brandished the spear; he said, 'I wil pin David to the wall!' David evaded him twice.	11 Saul scagliò la lancia, pensando: "Trafiggerò Davide alla parete!". Ma Davide si eclissò dalla sua presenza due volte.
12 Saul feared David, since Yahweh was with him and had withdrawn from Saul.	12 Saul aveva timore della presenza di Davide, perché il Signore era con lui e si era ritirato da Saul.
13 So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him commander of a thousand; he led thepeople on campaign.	13 Allora Saul se lo tolse da presso e ne fece un comandante di mille; ed egli andava e veniva alla testa della truppa.
14 In al his expeditions, David was successful and Yahweh was with him.	14 Davide aveva successo in ogni sua impresa e il Signore era con lui.
15 And Saul, seeing how very successful he was, was afraid of him.	15 Saul, costatando che egli era molto fortunato, ne aveva timore.
16 Al Israel and Judah loved David, however, since he was their leader on campaign.	16 Ma tutto Israele e Giuda amavano Davide, perché era lui che andava e veniva davanti a loro.
17 Saul said to David, 'This is my elder daughter Merab; I shal give her to you in marriage; but you mustserve me bravely and fight Yahweh's wars.' Saul thought, 'Better than strike the blow myself, let the Philistinesdo it!'	17 Saul propose a Davide: "Ecco la mia figlia maggiore Merab; te la darò per moglie, solo mostrati valoroso e combatti le battaglie del Signore". Infatti Saul aveva pensato: "Non sia la mano mia contro di lui, ma quella dei Filistei!".
18 David replied to Saul, 'Who am I and what is my lineage -- and my father's family -- in Israel, for meto become the king's son-in-law?'	18 Davide rispose a Saul: "Chi sono io e cosa è la famiglia di mio padre in Israele, perché io possa diventare genero del re?".
19 When the time came for Merab daughter of Saul to be given to David, she was given to Adriel ofMeholah instead.	19 Quando però venne il momento di dare Merab, figlia di Saul, a Davide, essa fu data in moglie ad Adriel di Mecola.
20 Now Michal daughter of Saul fel in love with David. When Saul heard this he was pleased.	20 Mikal, figlia di Saul, si era invece innamorata di Davide. Lo riferirono a Saul, al quale piacque la cosa.
21 He thought, 'Yes, I shall give her to him; she can be the snare for him, so that the Philistines wil gethim.' (On two occasions, Saul told David, 'Today, you shall be my son-in-law.')	21 Saul pensava: "Gliela voglio dare, perché ella sia un laccio per lui e sia la mano dei Filistei contro di lui". Così Saul disse due volte a Davide: "Sarai mio genero quest'oggi".
22 Saul gave instructions to his servants, 'Have a private word with David and say, "Look, the king isfond of you and al his servants love you -- why not be the king's son-in-law?" '	22 Saul ordinò ai suoi cortigiani: "Parlate in segreto a Davide e dite: "Ecco, il re prova affetto per te, e tutti i suoi servi ti vogliono bene, diventa dunque genero del re".
23 Saul's servants repeated these words in David's ear, to which David replied, 'Do you think thatbecoming the king's son-in-law is a trivial matter; I have neither wealth nor position.'	23 I cortigiani di Saul riportarono queste cose all'orecchio di Davide, ma egli rispose: "E' piccola cosa ai vostri occhi diventare genero del re? Io sono un uomo povero e spregevole".
24 Saul's servants then reported back, 'This is what David said.'	24 I cortigiani di Saul gli riferirono: "Davide ha parlato in questi termini".
25 Saul replied, 'Tel David this, "The king desires no bride-price except one hundred Philistineforeskins, in vengeance on the king's enemies." ' Saul was counting on getting David killed by the Philistines.	25 Saul disse: "Così direte a Davide: "Il re non desidera la dote, ma cento prepuzi dei Filistei per fare vendetta contro i nemici del re". Saul pensava di far cadere Davide nelle mani dei Filistei.
26 When his servants repeated this to David, David thought it would be a fine thing to be the king's son-in-law. And no time was lost	26 I cortigiani riferirono a Davide quelle proposte, e la proposta sembrò buona agli occhi di Davide per diventare genero del re. Non erano trascorsi i giorni fissati
27 before David got up to go, he and his men, and kil ed two hundred of the Philistines. David broughttheir foreskins back and counted them out before the king, so that he could be the king's son-in-law. Saul thengave him his daughter Michal in marriage.	27 che Davide si levò e partì con i suoi uomini e colpì tra i Filistei duecento uomini. Davide riportò i loro prepuzi che furono consegnati al re in numero esatto per diventare genero del re. Allora Saul gli dette sua figlia Mikal per moglie.
28 Saul could not but see that Yahweh was with David, and that the whole House of Israel loved him;	28 Saul vide e comprese che il Signore era con Davide e Mikal, sua figlia, lo amava.
29 Saul became more afraid of David than ever, and became his inveterate enemy.	29 Allora Saul ebbe ancor più timore di Davide e fu per tutti i giorni ostile a Davide.
30 The Philistine chiefs kept mounting their campaigns but, whenever they did so, David proved moresuccessful than any of Saul's staff; consequently he gained great renown.	30 I capi dei Filistei fecero delle incursioni, ma ogni volta che le facevano, Davide aveva più successo di tutti gli altri ministri di Saul. Così il suo nome diventò molto famoso.
