1 Samuel 18

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 When David had finished talking to Saul, Jonathan felt an instant affection for David; Jonathan lovedhim like his very self;	1 Apenas David terminó de hablar con Saúl, Jonatán se encariñó con él y llegó a quererlo como a sí mismo.
2 Saul engaged him that very day and would not let him go home to his father.	2 Saúl lo hizo quedar con él aquel día y no lo dejó volver a la casa de su padre.
3 Jonathan made a pact with David, since he loved him like his very self;	3 Y Jonatán hizo un pacto con David, porque lo amaba como a sí mismo.
4 Jonathan took off the cloak which he was wearing and gave it to David, and his armour too, evenincluding his sword, his bow and his belt.	4 El se despojó del manto que llevaba puesto y se lo dio a David, y lo mismo hizo con su indumentaria y hasta con su espada, su arco y su cinturón.
5 Wherever David was sent on a mission by Saul, he was successful, and Saul put him in command ofthe fighting men; al the people respected him and so did Saul's staff.	5 Siempre que salía de campaña, enviado por Saúl, David tenía éxito. Entonces Saúl lo puso al frente de sus hombres de guerra. David era bien visto por todo el pueblo y también por los servidores de Saúl.
6 On their return, when David was coming back from kil ing the Philistine, the women came out of al thetowns of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, sistrums and cries of joy;	6 A su regreso, después que David derrotó al filisteo, las mujeres de todas las ciudades de Israel salían a recibir al rey Saúl, cantando y bailando, al son jubiloso de tamboriles y triángulos.
7 and as they danced the women sang: Saul has kil ed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.	7 Y mientras danzaban, las mujeres cantaban a coro: «Saúl ha matado a miles y David a decenas de miles».
8 Saul was very angry; the incident displeased him. 'They have given David the tens of thousands,' hesaid, 'but me only the thousands; what more can he have, except the throne?'	8 Saúl se puso furioso y muy disgustado por todo aquello, pensó: «A David le atribuyen los diez mil, y a mí tan sólo los mil. ¡Ya no le falta más que la realeza!».
9 And Saul watched David jealously from that day onwards.	9 Y a partir de ese día, Saúl miró con malos ojos a David.
10 The fol owing day, an evil spirit from God seized on Saul and he fell into a frenzy while he wasindoors. David played the harp as on other occasions; Saul had a spear in his hand.	10 Al día siguiente, un mal espíritu que venía de Dios se apoderó de Saúl, y él se puso a delirar en medio de su casa. David tocaba su instrumento como los otros días, y Saúl tenía su lanza en la mano.
11 Saul brandished the spear; he said, 'I wil pin David to the wall!' David evaded him twice.	11 De pronto, Saúl empuñó la lanza, pensando: «Voy a clavar a David contra la pared». Pero David esquivó el golpe una y otra vez.
12 Saul feared David, since Yahweh was with him and had withdrawn from Saul.	12 Entonces Saúl tuvo miedo, porque el Señor estaba con David y, en cambio, se había retirado de él.
13 So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him commander of a thousand; he led thepeople on campaign.	13 Por eso lo apartó de su lado, constituyéndolo jefe de un militar de hombres. Así David iba y venía al frente de las tropas.
14 In al his expeditions, David was successful and Yahweh was with him.	14 El éxito lo acompañaba en todas sus empresas y el Señor estaba con él.
15 And Saul, seeing how very successful he was, was afraid of him.	15 Al ver que todo le salía bien, Saúl le tuvo miedo.
16 Al Israel and Judah loved David, however, since he was their leader on campaign.	16 pero todos en Israel y en Judá amaban a David, porque él iba y venía al frente de ellos.
17 Saul said to David, 'This is my elder daughter Merab; I shal give her to you in marriage; but you mustserve me bravely and fight Yahweh's wars.' Saul thought, 'Better than strike the blow myself, let the Philistinesdo it!'	17 Saúl dijo a David: «Ahí tienes a Merab, mi hija mayor; te la voy a dar por esposa, pero tendrás que servirme valerosamente y combatir en las guerras del Señor». En realidad, Saúl pensaba: «Que sean los filisteos, y no yo, los que pongan su mano sobre él».
18 David replied to Saul, 'Who am I and what is my lineage -- and my father's family -- in Israel, for meto become the king's son-in-law?'	18 Pero David respondió a Saúl: «¿Quién soy yo y quién es mi estirpe, el clan de mi padre en Israel, para que yo sea el yerno del rey?».
19 When the time came for Merab daughter of Saul to be given to David, she was given to Adriel ofMeholah instead.	19 Y cuando llegó el momento en que David debía casarse con Merab, la hija de Saúl, se la dieron como esposa a Adriel de Mejolá.
20 Now Michal daughter of Saul fel in love with David. When Saul heard this he was pleased.	20 Mientras tanto, Mical, la otra hija de Saúl, se había enamorado de David. Cuando se lo contaron a Saúl, este recibió con agrado la noticia.
21 He thought, 'Yes, I shall give her to him; she can be the snare for him, so that the Philistines wil gethim.' (On two occasions, Saul told David, 'Today, you shall be my son-in-law.')	21 porque pensó: «Se la dará para tenerlo atrapado, y así caerá en manos de los filisteos». Entonces Saúl dijo a David por segunda vez: «Hoy vas a ser mi yerno».
22 Saul gave instructions to his servants, 'Have a private word with David and say, "Look, the king isfond of you and al his servants love you -- why not be the king's son-in-law?" '	22 Además, dio esta orden a sus servidores: «Díganle a David confidencialmente: "El rey te aprecia y todos sus servidores te quieren; ahora es el momento de convertirte en yerno del rey"».
23 Saul's servants repeated these words in David's ear, to which David replied, 'Do you think thatbecoming the king's son-in-law is a trivial matter; I have neither wealth nor position.'	23 Los servidores del rey repitieron estas palabras a David, pero él les respondió: «¿Les parece poca cosa ser yerno del rey? Yo soy un hombre pobre y de condición humilde».
24 Saul's servants then reported back, 'This is what David said.'	24 Cuando los servidores informaron a Saúl de lo que había dicho David,
25 Saul replied, 'Tel David this, "The king desires no bride-price except one hundred Philistineforeskins, in vengeance on the king's enemies." ' Saul was counting on getting David killed by the Philistines.	25 Saúl les dijo: «Háblenle así a David: "Como único precio a cambio de su hija, el rey quiere cien prepucios de filisteos, para vengarse de sus enemigos"». De esta manera, Saúl pensaba lograr que David cayera en manos de los filisteos.
26 When his servants repeated this to David, David thought it would be a fine thing to be the king's son-in-law. And no time was lost	26 Los servidores comunicaron estas palabras a David, y a él le agradó la idea de convertirse en yerno del rey. Antes que se cumpliera el plazo fijado,
27 before David got up to go, he and his men, and kil ed two hundred of the Philistines. David broughttheir foreskins back and counted them out before the king, so that he could be the king's son-in-law. Saul thengave him his daughter Michal in marriage.	27 David partió con sus hombres y mató a doscientos filisteos. Luego trajo los prepucios y presentó ante el rey el número completo, para poder ser su yerno. Entonces Saúl le dio como esposa a su hija Mical.
28 Saul could not but see that Yahweh was with David, and that the whole House of Israel loved him;	28 Saúl, al ver esto, comprendió que el Señor estaba con David y que su hija Mical lo amaba.
29 Saul became more afraid of David than ever, and became his inveterate enemy.	29 Por eso creció el miedo que le tenía a David y fue su enemigo toda la vida.
30 The Philistine chiefs kept mounting their campaigns but, whenever they did so, David proved moresuccessful than any of Saul's staff; consequently he gained great renown.	30 Los jefes de los filisteos solían hacer incursiones, y cada vez que salían, David tenía más éxito que todos los servidores de Saúl. Así su nombre se hizo célebre.
