1 When David had finished talking to Saul, Jonathan felt an instant affection for David; Jonathan lovedhim like his very self;	1 E da quel punto, in cui (Davidde) ebbe parlato con Saul, l’anima di Gionata rimase strettamente congiunta coll’anima di David, e Gionata amollo, come l'anima sua.
2 Saul engaged him that very day and would not let him go home to his father.	2 E allora Saul lo tenne seco, e non permise che ei se ne tornasse a casa di suo padre.
3 Jonathan made a pact with David, since he loved him like his very self;	3 E David fermò stretta unione con Gionata: perocché lo amava, come l’anima propria.
4 Jonathan took off the cloak which he was wearing and gave it to David, and his armour too, evenincluding his sword, his bow and his belt.	4 Quindi Gionata si spogliò della tonaca, che avea addosso, e la diede a Davidde colle altre sue vestimenta, e sino la spada, e l’arco suo, e il cingolo.
5 Wherever David was sent on a mission by Saul, he was successful, and Saul put him in command ofthe fighting men; al the people respected him and so did Saul's staff.	5 E David andava ad eseguire tutte le commissioni che davagli Saul, e operava prudentemente: e Saul gli diede soprintendenza sopra la gente di guerra, ed egli era gradito a tutto il popolo, e particolarmente a tutti i servi di Saul.
6 On their return, when David was coming back from kil ing the Philistine, the women came out of al thetowns of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, sistrums and cries of joy;	6 Or quando tornava Davidde, ucciso il Filisteo, uscivano le donne da tutte le città d'Israele, cantando, e menando carole dinanzi al re Saul con istromenti di letizia, con timpani, e sistri.
7 and as they danced the women sang: Saul has kil ed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.	7 E le donne ballando intuonavano: Mille ne uccise Saul, e dieci mila Davidde.
8 Saul was very angry; the incident displeased him. 'They have given David the tens of thousands,' hesaid, 'but me only the thousands; what more can he have, except the throne?'	8 Or Saulle n'ebbe sdegno grandissimo, e dispiacquero sommamente a lui queste parole, e disse: Ne han dati dieci mila a Davidde, e mille a me: che più gli manca fuori del solo regno?
9 And Saul watched David jealously from that day onwards.	9 Saul pertanto da quel giorno in poi non guardava di buon occhio Davidde.
10 The fol owing day, an evil spirit from God seized on Saul and he fell into a frenzy while he wasindoors. David played the harp as on other occasions; Saul had a spear in his hand.	10 Ma il giorno appresso lo spirito malo (permettendolo il Signore) invase Saul, ed ei faceva il profeta in mezzo della sua casa, e David sonava, come soleva fare ogni dì: e Saul avea in mano una lancia,
11 Saul brandished the spear; he said, 'I wil pin David to the wall!' David evaded him twice.	11 E la scagliò, credendo di poter conficcare Davidde nella muraglia: ma Davidde la schivò per due volte.
12 Saul feared David, since Yahweh was with him and had withdrawn from Saul.	12 E Saul ebbe timore di Davidde (veggendo) come il Signore era con lui, ed erasi ritirato da sè.
13 So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him commander of a thousand; he led thepeople on campaign.	13 Saul adunque lo allontanò da sé, e lo fece capitano di mille uomini: ed egli andava e veniva, alla testa di quella gente.
14 In al his expeditions, David was successful and Yahweh was with him.	14 E in tutte le cose sue David si portava con prudenza, e il Signore era con lui.
15 And Saul, seeing how very successful he was, was afraid of him.	15 Saul perciò veggendo, quant'egli era prudente, cominciò ad averne sospetto.
16 Al Israel and Judah loved David, however, since he was their leader on campaign.	16 Ma tutto Israele, e Giuda portavan affetto a Davidde: perocché egli andava, e veniva innanzi ad essi.
17 Saul said to David, 'This is my elder daughter Merab; I shal give her to you in marriage; but you mustserve me bravely and fight Yahweh's wars.' Saul thought, 'Better than strike the blow myself, let the Philistinesdo it!'	17 E Saul disse a David; Orsù la mia figlia maggiore Merob sarà quella che io darò a le per consorte: solo, che tu sii valoroso, e combatta nella guerra del Signore. Or Saulle macchinava, e diceva: Non sia la mia mano che lo abbatta, ma sia la mano de' Filistei.
18 David replied to Saul, 'Who am I and what is my lineage -- and my father's family -- in Israel, for meto become the king's son-in-law?'	18 Ma David disse a Saul: Chi son io, e quale è stata la mia vita, e di qual condizione è in Israele la famiglia del padre mio, che io abbia ad essere genero del re?
19 When the time came for Merab daughter of Saul to be given to David, she was given to Adriel ofMeholah instead.	19 Or venuto il tempo, in cui Merob figliuola di Saul dovea esser data a Davidde, ella fu sposata ad Hadriele Molathite.
20 Now Michal daughter of Saul fel in love with David. When Saul heard this he was pleased.	20 Ma Michol l'altra figliuola di Saul avea affetto per David, e ne fu avvertito Saul, il quale n’ebbe piacere.
21 He thought, 'Yes, I shall give her to him; she can be the snare for him, so that the Philistines wil gethim.' (On two occasions, Saul told David, 'Today, you shall be my son-in-law.')	21 E disse Saul: Gliela darò affinchè sia a lui occasione d'inciampo, e i Filistei lo uccidano. E Saul disse a David: Per due titoli tu sarai oggi mio genero.
22 Saul gave instructions to his servants, 'Have a private word with David and say, "Look, the king isfond of you and al his servants love you -- why not be the king's son-in-law?" '	22 E Saul ordinò a’ suoi servi: Parlate a David senza mia saputa, e ditegli: Orsù tu se’ in grazia del re, e tutti i suoi servi ti amano: adesso adunque diventa genero del re.
23 Saul's servants repeated these words in David's ear, to which David replied, 'Do you think thatbecoming the king's son-in-law is a trivial matter; I have neither wealth nor position.'	23 E i servi di Saul dissero nell'orecchio a David tutte queste cose. Ma David replicò: Sembra a voi piccola cosa l'esser genero del re? E io son povero, e di basso stato.
24 Saul's servants then reported back, 'This is what David said.'	24 E i servi di Saul ne fecero relazione a lui, dicendo: David ha detto questo, e questo.
25 Saul replied, 'Tel David this, "The king desires no bride-price except one hundred Philistineforeskins, in vengeance on the king's enemies." ' Saul was counting on getting David killed by the Philistines.	25 Ma Saul disse: parlate a David in tal guisa: II re non ha bisogno di dote, vuol solamente la morte di cento Filistei per trar vendetta de’ suoi nemici. Ma Saulle avea in animo di dare Davidde nelle mani dei Filistei.
26 When his servants repeated this to David, David thought it would be a fine thing to be the king's son-in-law. And no time was lost	26 Ma quando i servi di Saul ebbero riferito a Davidde quello ch'egli avea detto, piacque la cosa a Davidde per diventare genero del re.
27 before David got up to go, he and his men, and kil ed two hundred of the Philistines. David broughttheir foreskins back and counted them out before the king, so that he could be the king's son-in-law. Saul thengave him his daughter Michal in marriage.	27 E di lì a pochi giorni Davidde si mosse colla gente che avea al suo comando. E uccise dugento Filistei, e portò i loro prepuzii, e li contò al re per esser fatto suo genero. Saul adunque gli diede per moglie la sua figlia Michol.
28 Saul could not but see that Yahweh was with David, and that the whole House of Israel loved him;	28 E Saul conobbe e intese, come il Signore era con David. E Michol figliuola di Saul lo amava.
29 Saul became more afraid of David than ever, and became his inveterate enemy.	29 E Saul principiò ad avere anche maggior paura di Davidde: e Saul diventò nimico perpetuo di Davidde.
30 The Philistine chiefs kept mounting their campaigns but, whenever they did so, David proved moresuccessful than any of Saul's staff; consequently he gained great renown.	30 E i principi de’ Filistei si mossero. E fin dal principio delle loro scorrerie, Davidde si portava più saggiamente che tutti i servi di Saul, e divenne celebre grandemente il suo nome.
