1 Yahweh said to Samuel, 'How much longer do you mean to go on mourning over Saul, now that Imyself have rejected him as ruler of Israel? Fil your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse ofBethlehem, for I have found myself a king from among his sons.'	1 Il Signore disse a Samuele: Fino a quando piangerai Saul, mentre io l'ho rigettato, perchè non regni sopra Israele? Or riempi d'olio il tuo corno, e vieni, chè ti mandi ad Isai Betlemita, perchè mi son provveduto un re tra i suoi figli ».
2 Samuel replied, 'How can I go? When Saul hears of it he wil kill me.' Yahweh then said, 'Take a heiferwith you and say, "I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh."	2 E Samuele disse: « Come potrò andarci? Saul lo saprà e mi ucciderà ». E il Signore a lui: « Condurrai colla tua mano un giovenco, e dirai: Son venuto per sacrificare al Signore.
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I shal reveal to you what you must do; and you wil anoint for me theone I indicate to you.'	3 Chiamerai Isai al sacrifizio; allora io ti mostrerò quello che tu devi fare, e ungerai colui che io ti indicherò ».
4 Samuel did what Yahweh ordered and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came trembling tomeet him and asked, 'Seer, is your coming favourable for us,'	4 Samuele, eseguendo quello che il Signore gli aveva detto, andò a Betlemme. Gli anziani, andatigli incontro maravigliati, dissero: « È pacifica la tua venuta? »
5 'Yes,' he replied. 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Purify yourselves and come with me to thesacrifice.' He purified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.	5 « Pacifica, rispose, son venuto per immolare al Signore: santificatevi e venite con me al sacrifizio ». Egli poi santificò Isai ed i suoi figli, e li chiamò al sacrifizio.
6 When they arrived, he looked at Eliab and thought, 'This must be Yahweh's anointed now before him,'	6 Entrati che furono, guardando Eliab, disse: « È forse davanti al Signore il suo unto? »
7 but Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Take no notice of his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him;God does not see as human beings see; they look at appearances but Yahweh looks at the heart.'	7 Ma il Signore disse a Samuele: « Non badare al suo volto, ne all'altezza della, sua statura, perchè io l'ho scartato: io non giudico secondo le vedute umane, perchè l'uomo mira le cose che dàn negli occhi; ma il Signore vede il cuore,
8 Jesse then cal ed Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this oneeither.'	8 Isai, chiamato Abinadab, lo presentò a Samuele, il quale disse: « Il Signore non ha eletto neppur questo ».
9 Jesse then presented Shammah, but Samuel said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this one either.'	9 E Isai gli condusse Samme; ma anche di lui disse: « Neppure questo ha eletto il Signore ».
10 Jesse thus presented seven of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, 'Yahweh has notchosen these.'	10 Isai allora fece venire i suoi sette figli davanti a Samuele; ma Samuele disse, ad isai: « Il Signore non ha eletto nessuno di questi ».
11 He then asked Jesse, 'Are these al the sons you have?' Jesse replied, 'There is stil one left, theyoungest; he is looking after the sheep.' Samuel then said to Jesse, 'Send for him, for we shal not sit down toeat until he arrives.'	11 Poi Samuele disse ad Isai: « Son forse tutti qui i tuoi figli? » Isai rispose: « Resta ancora un ragazzo che pasce le pecore ».
12 Jesse had him sent for; he had ruddy cheeks, with fine eyes and an attractive appearance. Yahwehsaid, 'Get up and anoint him: he is the one!'	12 E Samuele gli disse: « Fallo venir qui, perchè non ci metteremo a tavola finché non sia arrivato lui ».
13 At this, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him, surrounded by his brothers; and the spirit ofYahweh seized on David from that day onwards. Samuel, for his part, set off and went to Ramah.	13 Mandò a chiamarlo e lo fece venire. Egli era biondo, di bell'aspetto e di viso avvenente. E il Signore disse: Orsù, ungilo: è lui ». Allora Samuele, preso il corno dell'olio, lo unse in mezzo ai suoi fratelli. Da quel giorno in poi lo Spirito del Signore si posò sopra David. Poi Samuele partì e andò a Ramata.
14 Now the spirit of Yahweh had withdrawn from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh afflicted him withterrors.	14 Ma Io Spirito del Signore si ritirò da Saul, che era tormentato da uno spirito malvagio mandato dal Signore.
15 Saul's servants said to him, 'An evil spirit from God is undoubtedly the cause of your terrors.	15 I servi dissero a Saul: « Ecco che uno spirito malvagio, mandato da Dio, ti tormenta:
16 Let our lord give the order, and your servants who wait on you wil look for a skilled harpist; when theevil spirit from God comes over you, he wil play and it wil do you good.'	16 comandi il signore nostro, e i tuoi servi che stanno davanti a te, cercheranno un uomo il quale sappia sonar l'arpa, affinchè, quando le spirito malvagio mandato dal Signore ti avrà investito, egli suoni colla sua mano e tu ne sia sollevato ».
17 Saul said to his attendants, 'Find me, please, a man who plays wel , and bring him to me.'	17 E Saul disse ai suoi servi: « Trovatemi adunque uno che suoni bene, e conducetelo a me ».
18 One of the servants then spoke up and said, 'I have seen one of the sons of Jesse the Bethlehemite:he is a skil ed player, a brave man and a fighter, well spoken, good-looking and Yahweh is with him.'	18 Allora uno dei servi, rispondendo, disse: « Ecco, io conosco il figlio d'Isai Betlemita. il quale sa sonare, è dotato di grandissima forza, è uomo bellicoso, prudente nei parlare, di bell'aspetto, e il Signore è con lui ».
19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse with the order, 'Send me your son David (who is with the sheep).'	19 Saul allora mandò dei messi a dire ad Isai: « Mandami tuo figlio che va alla pastura ».
20 Jesse took five loaves, a skin of wine and a kid, and sent them to Saul by his son David.	20 E Isai, preso un asino carico di pane, un otre di vino e un capretto, lo mandò a Saul per mezzo di David suo figlio. David giunto da Saul si presentò dinanzi a lui, e Saul lo amò grandemente e lo fece suo scudiere.
21 David went to Saul and entered his service; Saul became very fond of him and David became hisarmour-bearer.	21 Poi Saul mandò a dire ad Isai: « Lascia che David stia presso di me, perchè ha trovato grazia negli occhi miei ».
22 Saul then sent a message to Jesse, 'Let David stay in my service, since he has won my favour.'	22 Ogni volta che lo spirito malvagio, mandato dal Signore, investiva Saul, David prendeva l'arpa e la sonava colla sua mano; allora Saul si riaveva e stava meno male, perchè lo spirito malvagisi ritirava da lui.
23 And whenever the spirit from God came over Saul, David would take a harp and play; Saul wouldthen be soothed; it would do him good, and the evil spirit would leave him.
