1 Samuel 10

1 Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on Saul's head; he then kissed him and said, 'Has not Yahwehanointed you as leader of his people Israel? You are the man who is to govern Yahweh's people and save themfrom the power of the enemies surrounding them. The sign for you that Yahweh has anointed you as prince ofhis heritage is this:	1 Samuel prit son flacon d’huile et le versa sur la tête de Saül, puis il l’embrassa et lui dit: “Yahvé t’a consacré comme chef de son peuple d’Israël. C’est toi qui gouverneras le peuple de Yahvé et tu le délivreras de la main de ses ennemis. Veux-tu être sûr que Yahvé t’a consacré comme chef de son héritage? Voici des signes:
2 after leaving me today, you will meet two men near the tomb of Rachel, on the frontier of Benjamin . . .and they wil say to you, "The donkeys which you went looking for have been found, and your father has lostinterest in the matter of the donkeys and is worrying about you and wondering, What am I to do about my son?"	2 Aujourd’hui même, après que tu m’auras quitté, tu rencontreras deux hommes à Zelza près de la tombe de Rachel, sur le territoire de Benjamin; ils te diront: On a retrouvé les ânesses que tu étais parti chercher; ton père ne se préoccupe plus maintenant des ânesses mais de vous, et il se demande que faire pour son fils.
3 Going on from there, you wil come to the Oak of Tabor, where you will meet three men going up toGod at Bethel; one wil be carrying three kids, one three loaves of bread and the third a skin of wine.	3 Tu continueras ton chemin et tu arriveras au Chêne-de-Tabor. Là tu rencontreras trois hommes qui s’en vont au sanctuaire de Dieu, à Béthel. L’un portera trois chevreaux, l’autre, trois boules de pain, et le dernier, une outre de vin.
4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread which you must accept from them.	4 Ils te salueront et te donneront deux pains que tu accepteras de leur part.
5 After this, you wil come to Gibeah of God (where the Philistine garrison is) and, when you are justoutside the town, you wil meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, headed by lyre,tambourine, pipe and harp; they wil be in a state of ecstasy.	5 Ensuite tu arriveras à Guibéa-de-Dieu, où il y a un commissaire Philistin. Aussitôt entré en ville, tu croiseras une bande de prophètes qui descendent du Haut-Lieu avec harpes, tambourins, flûtes et cithares, tous en train de prophétiser.
6 The spirit of Yahweh will then seize on you, and you wil go into ecstasy with them, and be changed into another man.	6 Alors l’esprit de Yahvé fondra sur toi et tu deviendras un autre homme.
7 When these signs have occurred, act as occasion serves, for God is with you.	7 “Lorsque ces signes se seront accomplis, tu agiras pour le mieux, car Dieu est avec toi.
8 You wil then go down, ahead of me, to Gilgal, and I shall join you there to make burnt offerings and tooffer communion sacrifices. You must wait seven days for me to come to you, and I shal then reveal to you whatyou must do.'	8 Tu me précéderas à Guilgal et moi, je t’y rejoindrai pour offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Tu m’y attendras sept jours, et je te ferai savoir alors ce que tu devras faire.”
9 As soon as he had turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. And al these signsoccurred that very day . . .	9 Saül avait à peine tourné le dos pour quitter Samuel, que Dieu lui changea le cœur et le jour même tous ces signes s’accomplirent.
10 From there, they came to Gibeah: and there was a group of prophets coming to meet him! The spiritof God seized on him and he fell into ecstasy with them.	10 En arrivant à Guibéa, Saül et son serviteur rencontrèrent la bande de prophètes: l’esprit de Dieu s’empara de lui et il se mit à prophétiser au milieu d’eux.
11 Seeing him prophesying with the prophets, al the people who had known him previously said to oneanother, 'What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the prophets too?'	11 En le voyant prophétiser avec les prophètes, tous ceux qui le connaissaient auparavant se dirent les uns aux autres: “Qu’est-ce qui est arrivé au fils de Kich? Saül est-il entré chez les prophètes?”
12 And one of the local people retorted, 'But who is their father?' Hence the origin of the proverb: Is Saulone of the prophets too?	12 L’un d’entre eux répondit: “Des gens dont le père n’est rien!” Et c’est ainsi qu’est venu ce proverbe: “Saül est entré chez les prophètes!”
13 When he came out of his ecstasy, he went into Gibeah.	13 Après qu’il eût fini de prophétiser, il rentra à la maison.
14 Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, 'Where have you been?' 'Looking for the donkeys,' hereplied, 'and when we could not find them anywhere, we went to Samuel.'	14 Son oncle lui demanda, comme à son serviteur: “Où êtes-vous donc allés?” Il répondit: “Nous avons couru à la recherche des ânesses et nous ne les avons pas trouvées, alors nous sommes allés trouver Samuel.”
15 Saul's uncle said, 'Tel me please what Samuel said to you.'	15 Son oncle lui dit: “Raconte-moi ce que vous a dit Samuel.”
16 Saul said to his uncle, 'He merely told us that the donkeys were already found,' but did not mentionanything that Samuel had said about the kingship.	16 Saül répondit à son oncle: “Il nous a dit simplement que les ânesses étaient retrouvées.” Il ne parla pas de ce que Samuel avait dit au sujet de la royauté.
17 Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah	17 Samuel convoqua le peuple près de Yahvé à Mispa.
18 and said to the Israelites, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I brought Israel out of Egypt anddelivered you from the power of the Egyptians and of al the kingdoms that were oppressing you."	18 Il dit aux Israélites: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: C’est moi qui ai fait sortir Israël d’Égypte, c’est moi qui vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous les rois qui vous opprimaient.
19 But today you have rejected your God, him who saves you from al your difficulties and troubles; andyou have said, "No, you must set a king over us." Very well, take your positions before Yahweh, tribe by tribeand clan by clan.'	19 Mais maintenant vous en avez assez de votre Dieu qui vous a sauvés de tous vos malheurs et de toutes vos détresses; vous lui avez dit: Cela suffit, donne-nous un roi! Maintenant donc, présentez-vous devant Yahvé par tribu et par famille.”
20 Samuel then made al the tribes of Israel come forward, and the lot indicated the tribe of Benjamin.	20 Samuel fit alors approcher toutes les tribus d’Israël et la tribu de Benjamin fut désignée par le sort.
21 He then made the tribe of Benjamin come forward clan by clan, and the lot indicated the clan ofMatri; he then made the clan of Matri come forward one by one, and the lot indicated Saul son of Kish, but whenthey looked for him, he was not to be found.	21 Il fit approcher les différentes familles de la tribu de Benjamin, et la famille de Matri fut désignée par le sort. Il fit approcher les hommes de la famille de Matri, et Saül, fils de Kich, fut désigné par le sort. On le chercha mais on ne le trouva pas.
22 Again they consulted Yahweh, 'Has the man come here?' Yahweh replied, 'There he is, hidingamong the baggage.'	22 Alors on demanda une réponse à Yahvé: “Saül est-il venu ici?” Yahvé répondit: “Il est allé se cacher là où sont les bagages.”
23 So they ran and fetched him out and, as he stood among the people, he was head and shoulderstal er than any of them.	23 On courut donc et on le fit sortir de là pour le présenter au peuple: il dépassait tout le monde de la hauteur de la tête!
24 Samuel then said to all the people, 'You have seen the man whom Yahweh has chosen, and thatamong the whole people he has no equal.' And all the people acclaimed him, shouting, 'Long live the king!'	24 Samuel dit à tout le peuple: “Voyez celui que Yahvé a choisi. Il n’y a personne comme lui dans tout le peuple.” Et tous poussèrent des acclamations en criant: “Vive le roi!”
25 Samuel then explained the king's constitutional position to the people and inscribed this in a bookwhich he placed before Yahweh. Samuel then sent al the people away, everyone back to his home.	25 Samuel dit alors au peuple le droit du roi et il l’inscrivit dans le livre qu’il déposa devant Yahvé; puis Samuel renvoya tout le peuple, chacun chez soi.
26 Saul too went home to Gibeah and with him went those strong men whose hearts God had touched.	26 Saül aussi rentra chez lui à Guibéa et les hommes courageux dont Dieu avait touché le cœur partirent avec lui.
27 But there were some scoundrels who said, 'How can this fellow save us?' These treated him withcontempt and offered him no present.	27 Mais des gens de rien répliquèrent: “Ce n’est pas celui-là qui nous délivrera!” Ils le méprisèrent et ne lui offrirent point de cadeau.
