NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fal en from heaven onto the earth, andthe angel was given the key to the shaft leading down to the Abyss.	1 Il quinto angelo suonò la sua tromba: vidi un astro caduto dal cielo sulla terra; gli fu consegnata la chiave della voragine dell'Abisso.
2 When he unlocked the shaft of the Abyss, smoke rose out of the Abyss like the smoke from a hugefurnace so that the sun and the sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss,	2 Egli aprì la voragine dell'Abisso e da essa salì un fumo come il fumo di una grande fornace; il sole e l'aria si offuscarono per il fumo della voragine.
3 and out of the smoke dropped locusts onto the earth: they were given the powers that scorpions haveon the earth:	3 Dal fumo vennero sulla terra delle cavallette; fu dato loro un potere simile a quello degli scorpioni terrestri.
4 they were forbidden to harm any fields or crops or trees and told to attack only those people who werewithout God's seal on their foreheads.	4 Ma fu loro ingiunto di non recar danno né a erba della terra né a pianta né ad albero alcuno; ma solo agli uomini che non avessero sulla fronte il sigillo di Dio.
5 They were not to kil them, but to give them anguish for five months, and the anguish was to be theanguish of a scorpion's sting.	5 Però fu loro concesso di non farli morire, ma di tormentarli per cinque mesi con un tormento simile a quello dello scorpione quando punge un uomo.
6 When this happens, people wil long for death and not find it anywhere; they wil want to die and deathwil evade them.	6 In quei giorni gli uomini cercheranno la morte e non la troveranno; brameranno morire, ma la morte fuggirà da loro.
7 These locusts looked like horses armoured for battle; they had what looked like gold crowns on theirheads, and their faces looked human,	7 Ora, al vederle, le cavallette somigliavano a cavalli pronti all'assalto: sulle loro teste portavano una specie di corone all'apparenza d'oro; le loro facce erano come facce di uomini.
8 and their hair was like women's hair, and teeth like lion's teeth.	8 I loro capelli sembravano capelli di donne; i loro denti somigliavano a quelli dei leoni.
9 They had body-armour like iron breastplates, and the noise of their wings sounded like the racket ofchariots with many horses charging.	9 Avevano corazze come corazze di ferro e il frastuono delle loro ali era come il fragore di carri con molti cavalli lanciati all'assalto.
10 Their tails were like scorpions' tails, with stings, and with their tails they were able to torture people forfive months.	10 Avevano code simili a quelle degli scorpioni, con pungiglioni: nelle loro code risiedeva il potere di tormentare gli uomini per cinque mesi.
11 As their leader they had their emperor, the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon,and in Greek Apol yon.	11 Avevano come re l'angelo dell'Abisso, il cui nome in ebraico si chiama Distruzione e in greco Sterminatore.
12 That was the first of the disasters; there are stil two more to come.	12 Il primo "guai" è passato; ma ecco: vengono subito gli altri due.
13 The sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a single voice issuing from the four horns of the goldenaltar in God's presence.	13 Il sesto angelo suonò la sua tromba: dai quattro angoli dell'altare d'oro, che sta davanti a Dio, udii uscire una voce,
14 It spoke to the sixth angel with the trumpet, and said, 'Release the four angels that are chained up atthe great river Euphrates.'	14 la quale al sesto angelo che teneva la tromba diceva: "Sciogli i quattro angeli che sono legati sul grande fiume Eufrate".
15 These four angels had been ready for this hour of this day of this month of this year, and ready todestroy a third of the human race.	15 Allora furono sciolti i quattro angeli che erano in attesa dell'ora, giorno, mese e anno, pronti a sterminare la terza parte degli uomini.
16 I learnt how many there were in their army: twice ten thousand times ten thousand mounted men.	16 Il numero delle truppe di cavalleria era di duecento milioni; udii il loro numero.
17 In my vision I saw the horses, and the riders with their breastplates of flame colour, hyacinth-blue andsulphur-yel ow; the horses had lions' heads, and fire, smoke and sulphur were coming from their mouths.	17 Così apparvero nella visione i cavalli e i loro cavalieri: indossavano corazze dall'aspetto di fuoco, giacinto e zolfo, mentre le teste dei cavalli somigliavano a quelle dei leoni; dalle loro bocche uscivano fuoco, fumo e zolfo.
18 It was by these three plagues, the fire, the smoke and the sulphur coming from their mouths, that theone third of the human race was killed.	18 Da questi tre flagelli, cioè dal fuoco, fumo e zolfo che uscivano dalle loro bocche, fu sterminata la terza parte degli uomini.
19 Al the horses' power was in their mouths and their tails: their tails were like snakes, and had headswhich inflicted wounds.	19 Infatti il potere dei cavalli sta nelle loro bocche e nelle code; le loro code infatti, alla maniera dei serpenti, sono munite di teste di cui si servono per nuocere.
20 But the rest of the human race, who escaped death by these plagues, refused either to abandon theirown handiwork or to stop worshipping devils, the idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood that canneither see nor hear nor move.	20 Gli uomini restanti, sfuggiti allo sterminio di tali flagelli, non rinunziarono ad adorare le opere delle loro mani, cioè demòni e idoli d'oro, d'argento, di bronzo, di pietra, di legno, incapaci di vedere, udire e camminare,
21 Nor did they give up their murdering, or witchcraft, or fornication or stealing.	21 e non si ravvidero dal commettere omicidi, magìe, dissolutezze e furti.
