NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a man, a Levite, whose home was deep inthe highlands of Ephraim. He took as concubine a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.	1 En ce temps-là -- il n'y avait pas alors de roi en Israël -- il y avait un homme, un lévite, qui résidait aufond de la montagne d'Ephraïm. Il prit pour concubine une femme de Bethléem de Juda.
2 In a fit of anger his concubine left him and went back to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, andshe stayed there for some time -- four months.	2 Dans un moment de colère sa concubine le quitta pour rentrer dans la maison de son père à Bethléemde Juda, et elle y demeura un certain temps, quatre mois.
3 Her husband then set out after her, to appeal to her affections and fetch her back; he had his servantand two donkeys with him. As he was arriving at the house of the girl's father, the father saw him and camehappily to meet him.	3 Son mari partit et alla la trouver pour parler à son coeur et la ramener chez lui; il avait avec lui sonserviteur et deux ânes. Comme il arrivait à la maison du père de la jeune femme, celui-ci l'aperçut et s'en vinttout joyeux au-devant de lui.
4 His father-in-law, the girl's father, kept him there; and he stayed with him for three days; they ate anddrank and spent the nights there.	4 Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint et il demeura trois jours chez lui, ils y mangèrentet burent et ils y passèrent la nuit.
5 On the fourth day they got up early, and the Levite was preparing to leave when the girl's father said tohis son-in-law, 'Have something to eat to gather strength; you can leave later.'	5 Le quatrième jour, ils s'éveillèrent de bon matin et le lévite se disposait à partir, quand le père de lajeune femme dit à son gendre: "Restaure-toi en mangeant un morceau de pain, vous partirez après."
6 So they sat down and began eating and drinking, the two of them together; then the girl's father said tothe young man, 'Please agree to spend tonight here too and enjoy yourself.'	6 S'étant assis, ils se mirent à manger et à boire tous les deux ensemble, puis le père de la jeune femmedit à cet homme: "Consens, je te prie, à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse."
7 And when the man got up to leave, the father-in-law pressed him again, and he spent another nightthere.	7 Comme l'homme se levait pour partir, le beau-père insista auprès de lui, et il y passa encore la nuit.
8 On the fifth day, the Levite got up early to leave, but the girl's father said to him, 'Please gatherstrength first!' So they stayed on until the sun began to go down, and the two men had a meal together.	8 Le cinquième jour, le lévite se leva de bon matin pour partir, mais le père de la jeune femme lui dit:"Restaure-toi d'abord, je t'en prie!" Ils s'attardèrent ainsi jusqu'au déclin du jour et ils mangèrent tous deuxensemble.
9 The husband was getting up to leave with his concubine and his servant when his father-in-law, thegirl's father, said, 'Look, day is fading into evening. Please spend the night here. Look, the day is nearly over.Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Then, early tomorrow, you can leave on your journey and go backhome.'	9 Le mari se levait pour partir avec sa concubine et son serviteur, quand son beau-père, le père de lajeune femme, lui fit: "Voici que le jour baisse vers le soir, passez donc la nuit. Voici le déclin du jour, passez lanuit ici, et que ton coeur se réjouisse. Demain de bon matin, vous partirez et tu regagneras ta tente."
10 But the man, refusing to stay the night, got up and went on his way, until he arrived within sight ofJebus -- that is, Jerusalem. He had with him two donkeys saddled, his concubine and his servant.	10 Mais l'homme, refusant de passer la nuit, se leva, partit et il arriva en vue de Jébus -- c'est-à-dire deJérusalem. Il avait avec lui deux ânes bâtés, ainsi que sa concubine et son serviteur.
11 By the time they were near Jebus, the light was going fast. The servant said to his master, 'Come on,please, let us turn off into this Jebusite town and spend the night there.'	11 Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit à son maître: "Viensdonc, je te prie, faisons un détour vers cette ville des Jébuséens et nous y passerons la nuit."
12 His master replied, 'We shal not turn off into a town of foreigners, of people who are not Israelites;we shal go on to Gibeah.'	12 Son maître lui répondit: "Nous ne ferons pas de détour vers une ville d'étrangers qui ne sont pas,ceux-là, des Israélites, mais nous pousserons jusqu'à Gibéa."
13 He then said to his servant, 'Come on, we shal try to reach one or other of those places, eitherGibeah or Ramah, and spend the night there.'	13 Et il ajouta à son serviteur: "Allons, et tâchons d'atteindre l'une de ces localités pour y passer lanuit, Gibéa ou Rama."
14 So they kept going and went on with their journey. As they approached Gibeah in Benjamin, the sunwas setting.	14 Ils poussèrent donc plus loin et continuèrent leur marche. A leur arrivée en face de Gibéa deBenjamin, le soleil se couchait.
15 So they turned that way to spend the night in Gibeah. Once inside, the Levite sat down in the townsquare, but no one offered to take them in for the night.	15 Ils se tournèrent alors de ce côté pour passer la nuit à Gibéa. Le lévite, étant entré, s'assit sur laplace de la ville, mais personne ne leur offrit dans sa maison l'hospitalité pour la nuit.
16 Eventual y, an old man came along at nightfal from his work in the fields. He too was from thehighlands of Ephraim, although he was living in Gibeah; the people of the place, however, were Benjaminites.	16 Survint un vieillard qui, le soir venu, rentrait de son travail des champs. C'était un homme de lamontagne d'Ephraïm, qui résidait à Gibéa, tandis que les gens de l'endroit étaient des Benjaminites.
17 Looking up, he saw the travel er in the town square. 'Where are you going?' said the old man, 'Andwhere have you come from?'	17 Levant les yeux, il remarqua le voyageur, sur la place de la ville: "Où vas-tu, lui dit le vieillard, etd'où viens-tu?"
18 'We are on our way', the other replied, 'from Bethlehem in Judah to a place deep in the highlands ofEphraim. That is where I come from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going home, but no onehas offered to take me into his house,	18 Et l'autre lui répondit: "Nous faisons route de Bethléem de Juda vers le fond de la montagned'Ephraïm. C'est de là que je suis. J'étais allé à Bethléem de Juda et je retourne chez moi, mais personne ne m'aoffert l'hospitalité dans sa maison.
19 although we have straw and provender for our donkeys, and I also have bread and wine for myself,and this maidservant and the young man who is travelling with your servant; we are short of nothing.'	19 Nous avons pourtant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, j'ai aussi du pain et du vin pour moi,pour ta servante et pour le jeune homme qui accompagne ton serviteur. Nous ne manquons de rien."
20 'Welcome,' said the old man. 'I shal see that you have al you want. You cannot spend the night inthe square.'	20 "Sois le bienvenu, repartit le vieillard, laisse-moi pourvoir à tous tes besoins, mais ne passe pas lanuit sur la place."
21 So he took him into his house and gave the donkeys provender. The travel ers washed their feet,then ate and drank.	21 Il le fit donc entrer dans sa maison et il donna du fourrage aux ânes. Les voyageurs se lavèrent lespieds, puis mangèrent et burent.
22 While they were enjoying themselves, some townsmen, scoundrels, came crowding round the house;they battered on the door and said to the old man, master of the house, 'Send out the man who went into yourhouse, we should like to have intercourse with him!'	22 Pendant qu'ils se réconfortaient, voici que des gens de la ville, des vauriens, s'attroupèrent autour dela maison et, frappant à la porte à coups redoublés, ils dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison: "Fais sortirl'homme qui est venu chez toi, que nous le connaissions."
23 The master of the house went out to them and said, 'No, brothers, please, do not be so wicked. Sincethis man is now under my roof, do not commit such an infamy.	23 Alors le maître de la maison sortit vers eux et leur dit: "Non, mes frères, je vous en prie, ne soyezpas des criminels. Après que cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.
24 Here is my daughter; she is a virgin; I shal bring her out to you. Il -treat her, do what you please withher, but do not commit such an infamy against this man.'	24 Voici ma fille qui est vierge. Je vous la livrerai. Abusez d'elle et faites ce que bon vous semble,mais ne commettez pas à l'égard de cet homme une pareille infamie."
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite took hold of his concubine and brought her out tothem. They had intercourse with her and ill-treated her al night til morning; when dawn was breaking they let hergo.	25 Ces gens ne voulurent pas l'écouter. Alors l'homme prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Ils laconnurent, ils abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin et, au lever de l'aurore, ils la lâchèrent.
26 At daybreak the girl came and fel on the threshold of her husband's host, and she stayed there until itwas light.	26 Vers le matin la femme s'en vint tomber à l'entrée de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son mariet elle resta là jusqu'au jour.
27 In the morning her husband got up and, opening the door of the house, was going out to continue hisjourney when he saw the woman, his concubine, lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.	27 Au matin son mari se leva et, ayant ouvert la porte de la maison, il sortait pour continuer sa route,quand il vit que la femme, sa concubine, gisait à l'entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
28 'Get up,' he said, 'we must leave!' There was no answer. He then loaded her on his donkey andbegan the journey home.	28 "Lève-toi, lui dit-il, et partons!" Pas de réponse. Alors il la chargea sur son âne et il se mit en routepour rentrer chez lui.
29 Having reached his house, he took his knife, took hold of his concubine and cut her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces; he then sent her throughout the territory of Israel.	29 Arrivé à la maison, il prit un couteau et, saisissant sa concubine, il la découpa, membre parmembre, en douze morceaux, puis il l'envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël.
30 He gave instructions to his messengers, 'This is what you are to say to al the Israelites, "Hasanything like this been done since the day when the Israelites came out of Egypt until today? Take this to heart,discuss it; then give your verdict." ' And al who saw it declared, 'Never has such a thing been done or been seensince the Israelites came out of Egypt until today.'	30 Il donna des ordres à ses émissaires, disant: "Voici ce que vous direz à tous les Israélites: A-t-onjamais vu pareille chose depuis le jour où les Israélites sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui?Réfléchissez-y, consultez-vous et prononcez." Et tous ceux qui voyaient, disaient: "Jamais chose pareille n'estarrivée et ne s'est vue depuis que les Israélites sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui."
