1 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a man, a Levite, whose home was deep inthe highlands of Ephraim. He took as concubine a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.	1 En ce temps-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël. Un Lévite qui résidait à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Éphraïm, prit comme concubine une femme de Bethléem en Juda.
2 In a fit of anger his concubine left him and went back to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, andshe stayed there for some time -- four months.	2 Sa concubine lui fut infidèle et le quitta pour retourner dans la maison de son père, à Bethléem en Juda, où elle resta environ quatre mois.
3 Her husband then set out after her, to appeal to her affections and fetch her back; he had his servantand two donkeys with him. As he was arriving at the house of the girl's father, the father saw him and camehappily to meet him.	3 Son mari se mit en route pour aller la rejoindre, pour parler à son cœur et la ramener avec lui; il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père et, dès que le père de la jeune femme l’aperçut, il vint tout heureux à sa rencontre.
4 His father-in-law, the girl's father, kept him there; and he stayed with him for three days; they ate anddrank and spent the nights there.	4 Son beau-père, père de la jeune femme, le retint et il resta là trois jours avec lui. Ils mangèrent, ils burent et passèrent la nuit en ce lieu.
5 On the fourth day they got up early, and the Levite was preparing to leave when the girl's father said tohis son-in-law, 'Have something to eat to gather strength; you can leave later.'	5 Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bonne heure et le Lévite se prépara pour partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: “Prends des forces, mange un morceau de pain; ensuite vous partirez.”
6 So they sat down and began eating and drinking, the two of them together; then the girl's father said tothe young man, 'Please agree to spend tonight here too and enjoy yourself.'	6 Ils s’assirent donc, ils mangèrent et burent tous les deux. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit à son mari: “Passe encore une nuit, prends un peu de bon temps!”
7 And when the man got up to leave, the father-in-law pressed him again, and he spent another nightthere.	7 L’homme allait se lever pour partir, mais son beau-père insista tellement qu’il revint et passa encore la nuit en cet endroit.
8 On the fifth day, the Levite got up early to leave, but the girl's father said to him, 'Please gatherstrength first!' So they stayed on until the sun began to go down, and the two men had a meal together.	8 Le cinquième jour, quand il se leva de bon matin pour se mettre en route, le père de la jeune femme lui dit: “Reprends donc des forces, attends la tombée du jour.” Ils mangèrent tous les deux.
9 The husband was getting up to leave with his concubine and his servant when his father-in-law, thegirl's father, said, 'Look, day is fading into evening. Please spend the night here. Look, the day is nearly over.Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Then, early tomorrow, you can leave on your journey and go backhome.'	9 Comme le mari se levait pour partir avec sa concubine et son serviteur, son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme lui dit: “Regarde! Le jour baisse, le soir ne tardera pas, passez donc ici la nuit. Prends un peu de bon temps; demain vous vous lèverez de bonne heure et vous vous mettrez en route pour rejoindre ta tente.”
10 But the man, refusing to stay the night, got up and went on his way, until he arrived within sight ofJebus -- that is, Jerusalem. He had with him two donkeys saddled, his concubine and his servant.	10 Mais le mari ne voulut pas passer une nuit de plus. Il se mit en route avec ses deux ânes chargés et sa concubine en direction de Jébus (c’est Jérusalem).
11 By the time they were near Jebus, the light was going fast. The servant said to his master, 'Come on,please, let us turn off into this Jebusite town and spend the night there.'	11 Lorsqu’ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé et le serviteur dit à son maître: “Tu devrais quitter la route et entrer dans cette ville des Jébusites, nous y passerons la nuit.”
12 His master replied, 'We shal not turn off into a town of foreigners, of people who are not Israelites;we shal go on to Gibeah.'	12 Mais son maître lui répondit: “Nous n’entrerons pas dans une ville étrangère: ces gens-là ne sont pas des Israélites. Allons plutôt jusqu’à Guibéa.”
13 He then said to his servant, 'Come on, we shal try to reach one or other of those places, eitherGibeah or Ramah, and spend the night there.'	13 Il ajouta: “Dépêchons-nous d’atteindre l’une de ces villes, Guibéa ou Rama, pour y passer la nuit.”
14 So they kept going and went on with their journey. As they approached Gibeah in Benjamin, the sunwas setting.	14 Ils passèrent donc, continuèrent leur route et arrivèrent près de Guibéa de Benjamin lorsque le soleil se couchait.
15 So they turned that way to spend the night in Gibeah. Once inside, the Levite sat down in the townsquare, but no one offered to take them in for the night.	15 Quittant la route, ils entrèrent dans Guibéa pour y passer la nuit. Le Lévite alla s’asseoir sur la place, mais personne ne les invita à passer la nuit dans sa maison.
16 Eventual y, an old man came along at nightfal from his work in the fields. He too was from thehighlands of Ephraim, although he was living in Gibeah; the people of the place, however, were Benjaminites.	16 Un homme âgé rentrait en fin de journée de son travail aux champs. Cet homme était de la montagne d’Éphraïm, il résidait à Guibéa où les habitants étaient de la tribu de Benjamin.
17 Looking up, he saw the travel er in the town square. 'Where are you going?' said the old man, 'Andwhere have you come from?'	17 Levant les yeux, il aperçut l’homme de passage assis sur la place de la ville. Le vieillard dit au Lévite: “Où vas-tu et d’où viens-tu?”
18 'We are on our way', the other replied, 'from Bethlehem in Judah to a place deep in the highlands ofEphraim. That is where I come from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going home, but no onehas offered to take me into his house,	18 Il répondit: “Nous venons de Bethléem en Juda et nous allons vers les confins de la montagne d’Éphraïm, car je suis de là-bas. J’étais allé jusqu’à Bethléem en Juda et je retourne chez moi, mais personne ne m’a reçu dans sa maison.
19 although we have straw and provender for our donkeys, and I also have bread and wine for myself,and this maidservant and the young man who is travelling with your servant; we are short of nothing.'	19 J’ai pourtant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ma femme et pour mon serviteur. Nous n’avons besoin de rien.”
20 'Welcome,' said the old man. 'I shal see that you have al you want. You cannot spend the night inthe square.'	20 L’homme âgé lui dit alors: “Ne t’inquiète pas, je te donnerai ce dont tu as besoin, mais ne passe pas la nuit sur la place.”
21 So he took him into his house and gave the donkeys provender. The travel ers washed their feet,then ate and drank.	21 Il le fit entrer dans sa maison et donna du fourrage aux ânes pendant que les voyageurs se lavaient les pieds. Ils mangèrent et burent.
22 While they were enjoying themselves, some townsmen, scoundrels, came crowding round the house;they battered on the door and said to the old man, master of the house, 'Send out the man who went into yourhouse, we should like to have intercourse with him!'	22 Tout semblait aller bien lorsque les hommes de la ville, de vrais voyous, entourèrent la maison et frappèrent à la porte. Ils dirent au vieillard, au maître de maison: “Fais sortir cet homme qui est venu chez toi, pour que nous abusions de lui.”
23 The master of the house went out to them and said, 'No, brothers, please, do not be so wicked. Sincethis man is now under my roof, do not commit such an infamy.	23 Le maître de maison sortit pour leur parler; il leur dit: “Non, mes frères, je vous en prie! Ne faites pas de mal. Vous voyez que cet homme est maintenant sous mon toit, ne commettez pas une chose pareille.
24 Here is my daughter; she is a virgin; I shal bring her out to you. Il -treat her, do what you please withher, but do not commit such an infamy against this man.'	24 J’ai une fille qui est encore vierge, et il y a aussi sa concubine. Je vous les amènerai dehors, vous pourrez les violer et les traiter comme bon vous semblera, mais ne commettez pas une chose aussi ignoble envers cet homme.”
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite took hold of his concubine and brought her out tothem. They had intercourse with her and ill-treated her al night til morning; when dawn was breaking they let hergo.	25 Les autres refusèrent de l’écouter. Alors le Lévite prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Ils la violèrent et abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusqu’au petit matin; à l’aube ils la laissèrent aller.
26 At daybreak the girl came and fel on the threshold of her husband's host, and she stayed there until itwas light.	26 La femme revint au petit matin et s’écroula devant la porte de la maison où logeait son mari. Elle resta là jusqu’au lever du jour.
27 In the morning her husband got up and, opening the door of the house, was going out to continue hisjourney when he saw the woman, his concubine, lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.	27 Alors son mari se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison et sortit pour reprendre sa route. Sa concubine était étendue devant la porte de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
28 'Get up,' he said, 'we must leave!' There was no answer. He then loaded her on his donkey andbegan the journey home.	28 Il lui dit: “Lève-toi et partons.” Mais il n’y eut pas de réponse. L’homme alors la chargea sur son âne et se mit en route pour retourner chez lui.
29 Having reached his house, he took his knife, took hold of his concubine and cut her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces; he then sent her throughout the territory of Israel.	29 Rentré chez lui, il prit un couteau, saisit le corps de sa concubine et la découpa, os par os, en douze morceaux qu’il envoya à travers tout le territoire d’Israël. Il avait donné cet ordre aux hommes qu’il envoyait: “Vous demanderez partout en Israël: A-t-on jamais vu cela depuis que les Israélites sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour? Réfléchissez, tenez conseil et donnez votre avis.”
30 He gave instructions to his messengers, 'This is what you are to say to al the Israelites, "Hasanything like this been done since the day when the Israelites came out of Egypt until today? Take this to heart,discuss it; then give your verdict." ' And al who saw it declared, 'Never has such a thing been done or been seensince the Israelites came out of Egypt until today.'	30 Tous ceux qui voyaient cela disaient: “On n’a jamais vu une chose pareille depuis que les fils d’Israël sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour.”
