NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a man, a Levite, whose home was deep inthe highlands of Ephraim. He took as concubine a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.	1 En aquel tiempo, cuando aún no había rey en Israel, hubo un hombre, levita, que residía como forastero en los confines de la montaña de Efraím. Tomó por concubina a una mujer de Belén de Judá.
2 In a fit of anger his concubine left him and went back to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, andshe stayed there for some time -- four months.	2 Se enfadó con él su concubina y lo dejó para volver a la casa de su padre en Belén de Judá, donde permanició bastante tiempo, unos cuatro meses.
3 Her husband then set out after her, to appeal to her affections and fetch her back; he had his servantand two donkeys with him. As he was arriving at the house of the girl's father, the father saw him and camehappily to meet him.	3 Su marido se puso en camino y fue donde ella, para hablarle al corazón y hacerla volver; llevaba consigo a su criado y un par de asnos. Cuando llegó a casa del padre de ella, le vio el padre de la joven y salió contento a su encuentro.
4 His father-in-law, the girl's father, kept him there; and he stayed with him for three days; they ate anddrank and spent the nights there.	4 Su suegro, el padre de la joven, lo retuvo y él se quedó con él tres días; comieron y bebieron y pasaron allí la noche.
5 On the fourth day they got up early, and the Levite was preparing to leave when the girl's father said tohis son-in-law, 'Have something to eat to gather strength; you can leave later.'	5 Al cuarto día se levantaron de madrugada y el levita se dispuso a partir; el padre de la joven dijo a su yerno: «Toma un bocado de pan para cobrar ánimo, y luego marcharás».
6 So they sat down and began eating and drinking, the two of them together; then the girl's father said tothe young man, 'Please agree to spend tonight here too and enjoy yourself.'	6 Se sentaron, y se pusieron a comer y beber los dos juntos. Luego el padre de la joven dijo al hombre: «Decídete, pasa aquí la noche y que se alegre tu corazón».
7 And when the man got up to leave, the father-in-law pressed him again, and he spent another nightthere.	7 Se levantó el hombre para marchar, pero el suegro le porfió y se quedó aquella noche.
8 On the fifth day, the Levite got up early to leave, but the girl's father said to him, 'Please gatherstrength first!' So they stayed on until the sun began to go down, and the two men had a meal together.	8 Al quinto día madrugó para marchar, pero el padre de la joven le dijo: «Cobra ánimo primero, por favor». Y pasaron el tiempo hasta declinar el día y comieron juntos.
9 The husband was getting up to leave with his concubine and his servant when his father-in-law, thegirl's father, said, 'Look, day is fading into evening. Please spend the night here. Look, the day is nearly over.Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Then, early tomorrow, you can leave on your journey and go backhome.'	9 Se levantaron para marchar el marido con su concubina y su siervo, pero su suegro, el padre de la joven, le dijo: «Mira que la tarde está al caer. Pasa aquí la noche y que se alegre tu corazón. Mañana de madrugada marcharéis y volverás a tu tienda».
10 But the man, refusing to stay the night, got up and went on his way, until he arrived within sight ofJebus -- that is, Jerusalem. He had with him two donkeys saddled, his concubine and his servant.	10 Pero el hombre no quiso pasar la noche allí; se levantó, partió y llegó frente a Jebús, o sea, Jerusalén. Llevaba consigo los dos asnos cargados, su concubina y su criado.
11 By the time they were near Jebus, the light was going fast. The servant said to his master, 'Come on,please, let us turn off into this Jebusite town and spend the night there.'	11 Cuando llegaban cerca de Jebús, era ya hora muy avanzada. El criado dijo a su amo: «Vamos, dejemos el camino y entremos en esa ciudad de los jebuseos para pasar allí la noche».
12 His master replied, 'We shal not turn off into a town of foreigners, of people who are not Israelites;we shal go on to Gibeah.'	12 Su amo le respondió: «No vamos a entrar en una ciudad de extranjeros, que no son israelitas; pasaremos de largo hasta Guibeá».
13 He then said to his servant, 'Come on, we shal try to reach one or other of those places, eitherGibeah or Ramah, and spend the night there.'	13 Y añadió a su criado: «Vamos a acercarnos a uno de esos poblados; pasaremos la noche en Guibeá o Ramá».
14 So they kept going and went on with their journey. As they approached Gibeah in Benjamin, the sunwas setting.	14 Pasaron, pues, de largo y continuaron su marcha. Y a la puesta del sol, llegaron frente a Guibeá de Benjamín.
15 So they turned that way to spend the night in Gibeah. Once inside, the Levite sat down in the townsquare, but no one offered to take them in for the night.	15 Se desviaron hacia allí y fueron a pasar la noche en Guibeá. El levita entró y se sentó en la plaza de la ciudad, pero no hubo nadie que les ofreciera casa donde pasar la noche.
16 Eventual y, an old man came along at nightfal from his work in the fields. He too was from thehighlands of Ephraim, although he was living in Gibeah; the people of the place, however, were Benjaminites.	16 Llegó un viejo que volvía por la tarde de sus faenas del campo. Era un hombre de la montaña de Efraím que residía como forastero en Guibeá; mientras que la gente del lugar era benjaminita.
17 Looking up, he saw the travel er in the town square. 'Where are you going?' said the old man, 'Andwhere have you come from?'	17 Alzando los ojos, se fijó en el viajero que estaba en la plaza de la ciudad, y el anciano le dijo: «¿A dónde vas y de dónde vienes?»
18 'We are on our way', the other replied, 'from Bethlehem in Judah to a place deep in the highlands ofEphraim. That is where I come from. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going home, but no onehas offered to take me into his house,	18 Y el otro le respondió: «Estamos de paso, venimos de Belén de Judá y vamos hasta los confines de la montaña de Efraím, de donde soy. Fui a Belén de Judá y ahora vuelvo a mi casa, pero nadie me ha ofrecido su casa.
19 although we have straw and provender for our donkeys, and I also have bread and wine for myself,and this maidservant and the young man who is travelling with your servant; we are short of nothing.'	19 Y eso que tenemos paja y forraje para nuestros asnos, y pan y vino para mí, para tu sierva y para el joven que acompaña a tu siervo. No nos falta de nada».
20 'Welcome,' said the old man. 'I shal see that you have al you want. You cannot spend the night inthe square.'	20 El viejo le dijo: «La paz sea contigo; yo proveeré a todas tus necesidades; pero no pases la noche en la plaza».
21 So he took him into his house and gave the donkeys provender. The travel ers washed their feet,then ate and drank.	21 Le llevó, pues, a su casa y echó pienso a los asnos. Y ellos se lavaron los pies, comieron y bebieron.
22 While they were enjoying themselves, some townsmen, scoundrels, came crowding round the house;they battered on the door and said to the old man, master of the house, 'Send out the man who went into yourhouse, we should like to have intercourse with him!'	22 Mientras alegraban su corazón, los hombres de la ciudad, gente malvada, cercaron la casa y golpeando la puerta le dijeron al viejo, dueño de la casa: «Haz salir al hombre que ha entrado en tu casa para que lo conozcamos».
23 The master of the house went out to them and said, 'No, brothers, please, do not be so wicked. Sincethis man is now under my roof, do not commit such an infamy.	23 El dueño de la casa salió donde ellos y les dijo: «No, hermanos míos; no os portéis mal. Puesto que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa no cometáis esa infamia.
24 Here is my daughter; she is a virgin; I shal bring her out to you. Il -treat her, do what you please withher, but do not commit such an infamy against this man.'	24 Aquí está mi hija, que es doncella. Os la entregaré. Abusad de ella y haced con ella lo que os parezca; pero no cometáis con este hombre semejante infamia».
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite took hold of his concubine and brought her out tothem. They had intercourse with her and ill-treated her al night til morning; when dawn was breaking they let hergo.	25 Pero aquellos hombres no quisieron escucharle. Entonces el hombre tomó a su concubina y se la sacó fuera. Ellos la conocieron, la maltrataron toda la noche hasta la mañana y la dejaron al amanecer.
26 At daybreak the girl came and fel on the threshold of her husband's host, and she stayed there until itwas light.	26 Llegó la mujer de madrugada y cayó a la entrada de la casa del hombre donde estaba su marido; allí quedó hasta que fue de día.
27 In the morning her husband got up and, opening the door of the house, was going out to continue hisjourney when he saw the woman, his concubine, lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.	27 Por la mañana se levantó su marido, abrió las puertas de la casa y salió para continuar su camino; y vio que la mujer, su concubina, estaba tendida a la entrada de la casa, con las manos en el umbral,
28 'Get up,' he said, 'we must leave!' There was no answer. He then loaded her on his donkey andbegan the journey home.	28 y le dijo: «Levántate, vámonos». Pero no le respondió. Entonces el hombre la cargó sobre su asno y se puso camino de su pueblo.
29 Having reached his house, he took his knife, took hold of his concubine and cut her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces; he then sent her throughout the territory of Israel.	29 Llegado a su casa, cogió un cuchillo y tomando a su concubina la partió miembro por miembro en doce trozos y los envió por todo el territorio de Israel.
30 He gave instructions to his messengers, 'This is what you are to say to al the Israelites, "Hasanything like this been done since the day when the Israelites came out of Egypt until today? Take this to heart,discuss it; then give your verdict." ' And al who saw it declared, 'Never has such a thing been done or been seensince the Israelites came out of Egypt until today.'	30 Y dio esta orden a su emisarios: «Esto habéis de decir a todos los israelitas: ¿Se ha visto alguna vez cosa semejante desde que los israelitas subieron del país de Egipto hasta hoy? Pensad en ello, pedid consejo y tomad una decisión». Y todos los que lo veían, decían: «Nunca ha ocurrido ni se ha visto cosa igual desde que los israelitas subieron del país de Egipto hasta hoy».
