1 The men of Ephraim mobilised; they crossed the Jordan near Zaphon and said to Jephthah, 'Why didyou go and make war on the Ammonites without asking us to go with you? We shal burn down your house overyour head!'	1 Ed ecco nascere una sedizione nella tribù di Efraim: gli Efraimiti, passati verso il settentrione, dissero a Iefte: « Perchè andando a combattere contro i figli di Ammon non ci hai voluto chiamare, affinchè potessimo venir teco? Per questo daremo fuoco alla tua casa ».
2 Jephthah replied, 'My people and I were in serious conflict with the Ammonites. I summoned you, butyou did not come to rescue me from them.	2 Iefte rispose loro: « Io e il mio popolo avevamo una gran contesa coi figli d'Ammon, ed io vi chiamai a recarmi aiuto, ma non voleste venire.
3 When I saw that no one was coming to rescue me, I took my life in my hands and marched against theAmmonites, and Yahweh handed them over to me. So why advance on me today to make war on me?'	3 Visto ciò, ponendo a repentaglio la mia vita, andai contro i figli d'Ammon, che il Signore mi diede nelle mani. 4 Jephthah then mustered al the men of Gilead and made war on Ephraim, and the men of Gileaddefeated Ephraim -- since the latter used to say, 'You are only fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heartof Ephraim and Manasseh.'	4 Allora Iefte, radunati tutti gli uomini di Galaad, combattè contro Efraim. I Galaaditi sconfissero Efraim, chè aveva detto: « Galaad è un fuggitivo d'Efraim e abita in mezzo tra Efraim e Manasse ».
5 Gilead then cut Ephraim off from the fords of the Jordan, and whenever Ephraimite fugitives said, 'Letme cross,' the men of Gilead would ask, 'Are you an Ephraimite?' 6 they then said, 'Very well, say Shibboleth.' If anyone said, "Sibboleth", because he could notpronounce it, then they would seize him and kil him by the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimitesfel on this occasion.	6 egli replicavano: « Di' dunque Scibboleth » (che vuol dir spiga); ma rispondendo egli « Sibboleth », non sapendo dire spiga colla sua giusta lettera, subito lo prendevano e lo scannavano al passo medesimo del Giordano. Così in quel tempo perirono di Efraim quarantadue mila uomini.
7 Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Jephthah the Gileadite then died and was buried in his town, inGilead.	7 E Iefte Galaadita giudicò Israele per sei anni, e morì e fu sepolto nella sua città di Galaad.
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem was judge in Israel.	8 Dopo di Iefte giudicò Israele Abesan di Betlemme.
9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters in marriage outside his clan andbrought in thirty brides from outside for his sons.
