1 The men of Ephraim mobilised; they crossed the Jordan near Zaphon and said to Jephthah, 'Why didyou go and make war on the Ammonites without asking us to go with you? We shal burn down your house overyour head!'	1 Ekkor azonban Efraimban lázadás támadt. Átmentek ugyanis északra és azt mondták Jeftének: »Miért nem hívtál minket, amikor hadba vonultál Ammon fiai ellen, hogy veled menjünk? Ezért felgyújtjuk házadat!«
2 Jephthah replied, 'My people and I were in serious conflict with the Ammonites. I summoned you, butyou did not come to rescue me from them.	2 Ő ezt felelte nekik: »Nagy perünk volt, nekem és népemnek, Ammon fiaival, hívtalak is titeket, hogy nyújtsatok segítséget, de ti nem akartátok megtenni.
3 When I saw that no one was coming to rescue me, I took my life in my hands and marched against theAmmonites, and Yahweh handed them over to me. So why advance on me today to make war on me?'	3 Amikor ezt láttam, kockára tettem életemet, s átvonultam Ammon fiai elé, s az Úr kezembe is adta őket. Mivel érdemeltem meg, hogy hadba szálltok ellenem?«
4 Jephthah then mustered al the men of Gilead and made war on Ephraim, and the men of Gileaddefeated Ephraim -- since the latter used to say, 'You are only fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heartof Ephraim and Manasseh.'	4 Aztán magához hívatta Gileád valamennyi emberét, s harcba bocsátkozott Efraimmal. Gileád emberei megverték Efraimot. Azt mondták ugyanis: »A gileádiak Efraimból menekültek el, s úgy telepedtek meg Efraim és Manassze között.« –
5 Gilead then cut Ephraim off from the fords of the Jordan, and whenever Ephraimite fugitives said, 'Letme cross,' the men of Gilead would ask, 'Are you an Ephraimite?' If he said, 'No,'	5 A gileádiak ezután megszállták a Jordán átkelőit, amelyeken Efraim vissza akart térni. 6 they then said, 'Very well, say Shibboleth.' If anyone said, "Sibboleth", because he could notpronounce it, then they would seize him and kil him by the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimitesfel on this occasion.	6 akkor felszólították: »Mondd ki tehát: Sibbólet« – ami annyit jelent, mint kalász. 7 Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Jephthah the Gileadite then died and was buried in his town, inGilead.	7 Hat esztendeig bíráskodott a gileádi Jefte Izraelen, aztán meghalt, és eltemették városában, Gileádban.
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem was judge in Israel.	8 Utána a betlehemi Ibszán bíráskodott Izraelen.
9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters in marriage outside his clan andbrought in thirty brides from outside for his sons.
