1 The men of Ephraim mobilised; they crossed the Jordan near Zaphon and said to Jephthah, 'Why didyou go and make war on the Ammonites without asking us to go with you? We shal burn down your house overyour head!'	1 - Ma allora sorse una sedizione fra gli uomini in Efraim, poichè passati questi verso il settentrione, vennero a dire a Jefte: «Perchè andando a combatter contro i figli di Ammon non hai voluto chiamarci per venire con te? Perciò noi daremo fuoco alla tua casa».
2 Jephthah replied, 'My people and I were in serious conflict with the Ammonites. I summoned you, butyou did not come to rescue me from them.	2 Al che egli rispose: «Io e il mio popolo avevamo una grande contesa coi figliuoli di Ammon, ed io v'invitai a prestarmi aiuto, ma non voleste accondiscendere.
3 When I saw that no one was coming to rescue me, I took my life in my hands and marched against theAmmonites, and Yahweh handed them over to me. So why advance on me today to make war on me?'	3 Vedendo ciò, posi la mia anima nelle mie mani, mossi contro i figli di Ammon e il Signore li diede nelle mie mani. Come mi sono io meritato che voi insorgeste contro di me per muovermi guerra?».
4 Jephthah then mustered al the men of Gilead and made war on Ephraim, and the men of Gileaddefeated Ephraim -- since the latter used to say, 'You are only fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heartof Ephraim and Manasseh.'	4 Chiamati pertanto intorno a sè tutti gli uomini di Galaad combattè contro Efraim; e gli uomini di Galaad sconfissero gli Efraimiti, perchè questi avevano detto: «Galaad è un fuggiasco di Efraim ed abita in mezzo ad Efraim e Manasse».
5 Gilead then cut Ephraim off from the fords of the Jordan, and whenever Ephraimite fugitives said, 'Letme cross,' the men of Gilead would ask, 'Are you an Ephraimite?'
