1 In the same way, you wives should be obedient to your husbands. Then if there are some husbandswho do not believe the Word, they may find themselves won over, without a word spoken, by the way their wivesbehave,	1 Ugualmente anche le donne stian soggette ai loro mariti, affinchè se ci fossero di quelli che non credono alla parola, anche senza la parola sian guadagnati dalla condotta delle loro mogli,
2 when they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.	2 quando avran considerato i vostri rispettosi e casti portamenti.
3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fineclothing,	3 L'ornamento delle donne non sia quello esterno, consistente nell'intrecciare i capelli, nel caricarsi di gioielli, nello sfoggio dei vestiti;
4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peacefulspirit, so precious in the sight of God.	4 ma consista nell'uomo interiore del cuore, nell'incorruttibilità d'uno spirito tranquillo e modesto, che ha tanto pregio agli occhi di Dio.
5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively -- they hoped in God andwere submissive to their husbands;	5 Così una volta anche le sante donne che speravano in Dio si adornavano, stando soggette ai loro mariti:
6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and cal ed him her lord. You are now her children, as longas you live good lives free from fear and worry.	6 come Sara, che obbediva ad Àbramo e lo chiamava signore; della quale siete figlie, se fate il bene senza aver paura di nulla.
7 In the same way, husbands must always treat their wives with consideration in their life together,respecting a woman as one who, though she may be the weaker partner, is equal y an heir to the generous giftof life. This wil prevent anything from coming in the way of your prayers.	7 E voi parimente, o mariti, convivete con saggezza insieme alle vostre mogli e abbiate loro dei riguardi, come a sesso più debole, ed onoratele, anche perchè esse con voi sono eredi della grazia di vita, affinchè non siano impedite le vostre preghiere.
8 Final y: you should al agree among yourselves and be sympathetic; love the brothers, havecompassion and be self-effacing.	8 Finalmente siate tutti concordi, compassionevoli, amanti dei fratelli, misericordiosi, modesti, umili.
9 Never repay one wrong with another, or one abusive word with another; instead, repay with a blessing.That is what you are cal ed to do, so that you inherit a blessing.	9 Non rendete male per male, nè maledizione per maledizione, ma anzi benedite; perchè a questo siete stati chiamati per ereditare la benedizione.
10 For Who among you delights in life, longs for time to enjoy prosperity? Guard your tongue from evil,your lips from any breath of deceit.	10 « Chi dunque vuole amare la vita e veder giorni felici, raffreni la sua lingua dal male e le sue labbra dal parlar fraudolento;
11 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.	11 schivi il male e faccia il bene, cerchi la pace e si sforzi di conseguirla
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the upright, his ear turned to their cry. But the Lord's face is setagainst those who do evil.	12 perchè il Signore ha gli occhi sopra i giusti e le orecchie intente alle loro preghiere; ma la faccia di Dio è contro coloro che fanno il male ».
13 No one can hurt you if you are determined to do only what is right;	13 E chi vi potrà far del male se sarete zelanti del bene?
14 and blessed are you if you have to suffer for being upright. Have no dread of them; have no fear.	14 Se poi aveste a soffrire per la giustizia beati voi! Non temete però le loro minacce e non vi turbate,
15 Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for peoplewho ask you the reason for the hope that you have.	15 ma santificate nei vostri cuori Cristo Signore, pronti sempre a dar soddisfazione a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza che è in voi:
16 But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your goodbehaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.	16 ma con modestia e rispetto, forti della vostra buona coscienza, affinchè, quando sparlan di voi, restin confusi quelli che calunniano la vostra buona maniera di vivere secondo Cristo.
17 And if it is the wil of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doingwrong.	17 Infatti è meglio soffrire (se tal'è il volere di Dio) facendo il bene, che facendo il male,
18 Christ himself died once and for al for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. Inthe body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life,	18 per­chè anche Cristo una volta è morto per i nostri peccati, il giusto per gli ingiusti, per offrirci a Dio. E' stato messo a morte secondo la carne, ma reso alla vita per lo spirito.
19 and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison.	19 Per esso andò a predicare anche agli spiriti che erano in carcere,
20 They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah's time when theark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.	20 ed un tempo erano stati increduli, quando, ai giorni di Noè, la pazienza di Dio stava aspettando che fosse fabbricata l'arca, ove pochi, cioè otto anime, si salvarono sopra l'acqua.
21 It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now -- not the washing off of physical dirtbut the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,	21 Alla qual figura corrisponde ora il battesimo che vi salva (non lavanda delle sozzure della carne, ma contratto di buona coscienza fatto con Dio), per mezzo della risurrezione di Gesù Cristo,
22 who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject tohim.	22 il quale sta alla destra di Dio, e, dopo avere ingoiata la morte per farci diventare eredi della vita eterna, è andato in Cielo e a lui stan sottoposti gli angeli e le potestà e le virtù.
